Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, February 26, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

On Sunday night, viewers of WHNT in Huntsville, Alabama who were watching the first segment of 60 Minutes may have initially thought something funny was going on, but it turns out it truly was a technical glitch with the satellite receiver.  The opening story was about former Democratic Governor of Alabama, Don Siegelman and his conviction on bribery charges, and the potential involvement of a former Bush administrative official.  The segment lasted 13 minutes, and the station outage lasted 12.  The station received permission from CBS to rerun the story in full during its 10p newscast, and again in its Monday 6p news.

WE tv will introduce a new 12-part, one-hour series, Women Behind Bars on March 4 at 9p. During each episode, the original documentary series produced by Burrud Productions, will profile two different female murderers who are currently in prison.

A new original series on Bio will reveal true-life accounts of people who endured life-threatening situations as I Survived … will premiere March 24 at 9p. In each of the eleven one-hour episodes, I Survived … chronicles two or three life-changing stories. The series is produced by NHNZ for the network. 

Independent distributor, Mighty Oak Entertainment renewed its ad sales deal with Sony Pictures Television for its nationally syndicated Whacked Out Sports comedy clip series. The renewal is effective through the 2008 season.

USA Network’s season six finale of Monk last Friday (9p) had 6.9 million total viewers watching while the episode drew in 3 million A25-54 viewers.

The Council for Research Excellence, an independent forum of media research experts founded by Nielsen, commissioned a year-long study by Ball State University’s Center for Media Design (CMD) to gauge how people consume traditional and emerging video platforms in and out of the home. The Video Consumer Mapping Study, which will be conducted jointly by CMD and the consultancy firm Sequent Partners, will track how television and video are consumed across multiple platforms to establish best practices in the area of video media measurement.

Citing a lack of “sufficient client commitments,” The Nielsen Company and Arbitron Inc. have ended the development of “Project Apollo,” the proposed single-source national research service. The two companies have been working “Project Apollo” since early 2005 and it was based on Nielsen’s Homescan technology for measuring consumer purchase behavior and Arbitron’s Portable People Meter system that measures electronic media exposure.

Univision Network and Todobebe Inc. will partner to produce Viva la Familia! de Todobebe (Hooray for Families! From Todobebe) a one-hour weekend series targeted to mothers and young families. Television star and recent new mom, Aracely Arambula will host and executive produce the show that will combine humor, entertainment, real-life segments and information about babies and childrearing. Also appearing as co-hosts will be editor/founder of Todobebe, Jeannette Kaplun and actress Karen Martinez.

MySpace TV has ordered up a hidden camera series called Special Delivery where special delivery folks get the candid camera routine. Per THR, each episode is 3 minutes long, and MySpace TV has ordered 18 eps. The series was created by Avalon TV, and will be fully sponsored by Frito-Lay/Cheetos

Casting Call: NBC’s America’s Got Talent, from FremantleMedia North America and SYCO Television, started a nationwide search for performers to compete in the talent competition show’s third season. The producers and celebrity judges will be in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York for auditions and show tapings. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:     ABC struck an “unprecedented arrangement” with its affiliates to expand ad-supported, fast-forward disabled VOD offerings to multiple cable, satellite and telco distributors. Each affiliate will get one local 30-second avail for each 30-minutes of programming, twice what they receive from streaming shows on their website. ABC has been testing the service in Cox’s Orange County system and is more than convinced viewers are happy to put up with ads in exchange for the ability to time shift their favorite shows. (Research conducted by Knowledge Networks/Statistical Research said 93% of viewers agreed to the trade off, with 20% saying they preferred ad supported VOD to a DVR.) The deal also removes previous repurposing restrictions, which should open the door to distributing ABC shows on additional platforms beyond current distribution partners such as iTunes and Xbox.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYBatman: Gotham Knight, the new DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Animation original animated movie will be released direct-to-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc from Warner Home Video on July 8, 2008.  Simultaneously, Batman: Gotham Knight will also be available OnDemand and Pay-per-View as well as for download on the same date.  Set between the movies Batman Begins and the forthcoming The Dark Knight, Batman: Gotham Knight is comprised of six interwoven animated stories from a range of noted animation directors and movie and comics writers and animated at three different animation houses, Studio 4ºC, Production I.G. and Madhouse.  Batman: Gotham Knight is produced by Emma Thomas (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Michael Uslan & Benjamin Melniker (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), Toshi Hiruma and Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series).  This is the third DC Universe Animated Original movie, the release features a sneak peek at Wonder Woman, its upcoming original animated movie.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYLess than a month after NATPE, Brazil’s Globo TV International picked up its first sales with 10 signed deals for the rights to air the four unreleased telenovelas showcased at the market. Pages of Life was picked up for markets in Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela with negotiations underway with three other countries. Bolivia, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and Venezuela bought Tropical Paradise, while Little Missy and Seven Sins were sold to three countries. Sunday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC took home the gold Sunday night at 8.4/20 A18-49, according to fast national data from Nielsen Media Research. ABC carried the night with its Oscar coverage: at 7p the Barbara Walters Special posted a 4.8/13. The Red Carpet pre-show and the start of the 80th Annual Academy Awards during 8p averaged a 9.4/22. The Awards show delivered a double digit 10.2/23 at 9p and remained in the lead through 10p at 9.0/23.  However, it should also be noted this was the smallest Oscar audience ever, with just 32 million viewers, down from last year’s 40.2 million viewers.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

NBC Universal announced several promotions in its TV Networks Distribution unit:

  • Elizabeth Asencio to SVP/National Sales to be part of the National Accounts team for the distribution of all NBCU TV Networks Distribution offerings including the Olympics, VOD and hi-def products for Cablevision, AT&T and Verizon. She continues to report to Henry Ahn, EVP/National Accounts.
  • Heather McCallion to VP/Affiliate Sales where she will now supervise the Eastern Region from Maine to Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands along the eastern seaboard. She will work with MSO’s regional and divisional offices in these areas as well as all field accounts, reporting to Mary Murano, EVP/Affiliate Sales.
  • Bradley Trullinger was upgraded to Associate Manager/Affiliate Sales to manage the distribution of fifteen NBCU networks as well as the Olympics, VOD and hi-def. He covers the East Field Sales regions and is charged with securing out of home distribution for CNBC, CNBC+, MSNBC and CNBC World for IPTV for major financial institutions. Bradley will continue to report to Jennifer Toole, Regional Director/Affiliate Sales.
  • Justin Dickerson was upped to AE/Affiliate Sales where he joins the National Accounts team to assist with securing the distribution of NBCU cable networks for DIRECTV and Echostar. He will report to Lee Crain, SVP/National Accounts.

Discovery Networks International named Catherine Mullen as SVP/Strategy and Digital Media, reporting to Sahar Elhabashi, COO. Catherine will work in tandem with international senior management to establish strategic and business development goals across the division and increase international digital media business. In addition, Alden Mitchell is now VP/Strategy to help manage strategic planning and business development for the unit while reporting direct to Catherine Mullen.

Robert Ivins joined Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales arm of Comcast Cable, in the new position as VP/Data Development. Robert will develop data strategy and will manage the design and delivery of information systems that use data streams from the company’s interactive media to benefit all ad-supported digital platforms including linear television, VOD and online advertising.

Fuse tapped Allan Infeld for its executive management group as SVP/Advertising Sales. He will be responsible for the daily operations of the network’s Advertising Sales department. Previously, Allan was VP/Sales at MTV where he worked with Nickelodeon’s “Kids and Family” Digital Advertising Sales Group.

The NBC Agency advanced John-David Currey to SVP/On-Air Promotion; Larry Hart to the new position of SVP/Content Production and Distribution; and Ron Hayes to SVP/Creative Director, Special Projects for NBC On-Air Promotion. All three will report to Jim Vescera, EVP/On-Air Advertising, West Coast. In addition, Lorenzo de Guttadauro was hired as VP/Brand Strategy, reporting to Jim Vescera; Sylvia Hart will move to VP/Marketing initiatives for NBC Promotion, reporting to John-David Currey; and Dave Dore was elevated to VP/Special Projects for The NBC Agency, reporting to Ron Hayes.

David Botero is the new Director/Media and “Biz Dev” with andCulture where he will be responsible for all media buying and coordination in addition to business development. The firm also promoted Peter Laudermilch to Creative Director to head the creative department.
