Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

02.16.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, February 16, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Ralph Kramden

It only ran as its own series for 39 episodes, but the Honeymooners, for all its fame, also provided us with a lesson in social networking that we are still trying to master.  Occasionally, Ralph and Ed would go to their favorite lodge, The Royal Order of Raccoons and talk and drink beer as they wiggled their raccoon tails along with their fellow lodge members.  Although it might have seemed entirely social, you can bet that if a Raccoon became unemployed, the fellow members would do their best to find their buddy a job.

Despite all the social networking sites on the internet, and they are good, nothing beats meeting people face to face to make a great impression.

Professional meetups or social networking events that are held in most major cities are a fantastic way of getting to meet other people, some in the same situation, and some looking to hire.  You can benefit greatly from both.  Trading notes with anyone in the same situation can be enlightening, and if you make a good face to face impression on someone who is hiring, you have a tremendous advantage over all the other potential employees who are known only through resumes, cover letters and web sites.

If professional meetups are rare in your city, create a presentation on the type of work you do, and showcase it at industry events.  This is a great way of meeting important people face to face rather than through LinkedIn or Twitter.  As a job hunter this is your first priority, but because these meetups don’t happen frequently enough, also scour LinkedIn and Twitter and every other social networking site.

Joining industry organizations is another great way of meeting people who could shape your future.  Some charge a nominal fee, others charge a substantial amount of money.  Before spending any money, determine what kind of access you will have to other members, are there plenty of social events giving you ample opportunity to meet face to face with them?  But be careful, nobody wants to talk to someone who has no other interests other than finding a job.  As we have mentioned in previous articles, ask for advice, not for a job.  Do your research, someone hiring likes golf, start reading up on golf.  Have other topics to approach with, when the time is right, ask about how their job is going.  After answering, most people will ask back in return.  Tell them you are unemployed, and ask if they know who is hiring but don’t ask for a job.  It will create tension, and that is the last thing you want.  By this time, you have dropped enough clues, if this person wants to interview you, they’ll ask.

Don’t discount social clubs and organizations either, as the bonds between members tend to be stronger than those of professional organizations.  Besides, Raccoons never let a fellow Raccoon down.

Next week: What the Buzz is all about

We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Avoiding the Appearance of Extortion
by Stephen Pollan and Mark Levine

Historically, one of the most effective means of boosting salary has been to explain to your current employer that you’ve been offered another job. Since the cost of finding and hiring a new employee is almost always more than giving a raise to an existing employee, most employers over the years have caved in and responded to this obvious extortion with a raise in order to keep you on board.

Today, this tool remains effective in the short term, but in the long term it is very dangerous. The successful extortionist will find him or herself on the short list of problematic employees not to be trusted and to be removed when possible. Using a job offer as leverage for a raise will work, but in exchange for that increase you’ve removed whatever safety net you had and painted a big target on your back. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t provide your current employer with the chance to keep you. You just need to dilute the risk that you’d end up on the black list.

Ironically, the best way to do this is to present your taking the new job as a done deal, but to do so in a way that leaves the door just slightly ajar so they could push it open if they choose. The idea of countering this outside offer needs to originate with them, not you so it’s not an act of employee extortion; it’s an act of savvy management.

When you meet with your current employer say “I regret to tell you I’m leaving. I was approached by Acme Inc. and they’ve offered me a position.” Do not, I repeat, do not, go on to use the word “accept” in your announcement. Instead, let your current employer respond to your opening statement. This isn’t just semantics. The word acceptance carries a legal implication, making any attempt on their part to keep you feel somehow unethical, maybe even immoral.

They will respond to an honest, direct announcement either by asking when you’ll be leaving indicating there will be no counter offer or by asking “is there any way we could keep you?” That’s the seed of the counter offer. An honest but ambiguous answer, such as “I’ve loved it here and wish I could stay,” which again doesn’t include any actual mention of acceptance, gives them a chance to make you a counter offer.

Don’t engage in salami slicing. Any negotiating would immediately turn this into an extortion plot. If the counter is large enough to keep you in place, accept it. If it’s not, thank them, but explain you’ve “accepted” the other offer. That will shut the door cleanly.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Stephen Pollan and Mark Levine

As I am looking for a new job in marketing and sales, I would love your feedback on the importance of thank you notes post-interviews, as well as the key strengths of a solid note. Any help on the length and flow would be helpful as well.

Thank you notes are vital, but you shouldn’t lose sleep over composing them. They are negative rather than positive screening tools. If you don’t send one it’s a strike against you and could lead to your losing out in a close choice between candidates. If you send a great thank you note, however, it’s not going to be sufficient to win you a job in a close competition with someone who sends just a good one. Keep it simple. Offer thanks for the opportunity to interview, repeat one of your own selling points, restate an answer to one of the interviewer’s pet interests, and wrap it up.

When is too early to arrive for an interview? I don’t want to appear too eager, but I am clearly eager.

Give yourself enough travel time to get to the site of the interview 20 to 30 minutes before the interview time. Compose yourself, relax, and then show up at the location of the interview 10 to 15 minutes early. That says you’re punctual and eager, not out of work and desperate.
