Good morning, it’s Tuesday, February 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Uncomfortable with the popularity and power of Apple’s App Store, two dozen of the world’s leading carriers including AT&T, Verizon, China Unicom, Deutsche Telecom and NTT DoCoMo are coming together to launch their own open international applications platform in a bid to try and standardize app development across the world. This “Wholesale Applications Community,” announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will initially utilize both the JIL (compatible with Vodaphone, Verizon and China Mobile) and OMTP BONDI standards to enable developers to write an app once to play across platforms and operators. So far LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have announced support of the initiative.

Hoping to catch up with both the iPhone and Android, Microsoft took the wraps off its Windows 7 mobile operating system, promising to improve connectivity between multiple Redmond-based platforms. Smartphone users running on Microsoft’s new mobile OS will be able connect with Xbox Live and Zune as well as share content more easily across platforms. The interface will divide content into 6 “hubs” that seek to compartmentalize what folks do on their phone:
- People – social networking
- Pictures – photo sharing and archiving
- Games - with access to the Xbox Live marketplace
- Music & Video – Zune playback and sharing
- Marketplace – Microsoft’s app store
- Office – mobile versions of Outlook Mobile Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace

Super Bowl television ads did a good job of driving consumers to advertisers’ web sites, according to data released from Integrated Media Measurement, Inc. Overall, 31.4% of IMMI panelists watching the Super Bowl with internet access visited the web site of a Super Bowl advertiser during the period immediately following the telecast until midnight. The three advertisers who were most successful at this were GoDaddy (20%), Monster.com (8.6%) and Dockers (5.7%). The data also showed that 71.4% of panelists visited Google.com in that same time period.
Online video management platform Brightcove announced support of Adobe’s Flash 10.1 video standard, extending video it serves to run on multiple mobile devices including Google Android, Palm, Windows and BlackBerry. (The solution basically supports every other popular smartphone device besides the iPhone, although Brightcove does provides a separate player and software development kit to enable publishers to create iPhone apps and mobile video web sites.) The upgrade is based on the H.264 video encoding standard and promises to improve performance while reducing strain on mobile batteries.
In a move to gain ground in the smartphone arena, Intel and Nokia have merged their mobile operating systems into MeeGo, a new open source Linux-based solution that combines Nokia’s Maemo OS with Intel’s Moblin OS. As the iPhone OS is being used as the foundation for the iPad, the MeeGo system is also being positioned to run on netbooks, tablet devices and interactive television interfaces. The first mobile devices running on MeeGo are expected out during Q2 of this year.

San Francisco-based ad tech firm Dapper has appointed James Beriker as its new President and CEO. James most recently served as President & CEO of Efficient Frontier.
One of the unexpected benefits of the proliferation of smartphones and the build up of a healthy mobile content community is the ability for small premium programmers to reach an audience remotely. Modern Jazz internet radio service Moja Radio has been eking out an existence by charging a small batch of loyal listeners a comparatively hefty $10/month to listen to its single commercial free station. (Most of the Moja’s customers – about 85% reckons co-founder and jazz expert Russ Davis – listened to the service when it was on satellite radio, before the merger of Sirius and XM left many of the smaller players off the dial.) But the inability to reach listeners away from desks limits the appeal of such an exclusive service. So Moja Radio is spending its entire R&D budget on a free iPhone app that will bring the subscription stream to mobile users Russ tells us, hoping to have it ready to launch in the coming weeks. With more and more users buying home audio systems and car audio kits for their iPhones, it’s a pretty effective way to reach music fans. The challenge for Russ, who also hosts Jazz shows for Voice of America, is to turn up new passionate modern jazz aficionados willing to pay $120/year for a single channel. Moja Radio tried giving its station away for free on iTunes and Live 365 to tease listeners into becoming paying subscribers. Fourteen thousand subscribed for free but not one signed up to pay for the service. Check it out and listen to the free sample stream, and Moja’s view on all things modern jazz, from Russ Davis and Michelle Sammartino.
