Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Zodiak Media Group launches Zodiak Kids, a new entity that will house the company’s kid-centric production/distribution units, Marathon Media, Tele-images Productions, Zodiak Active Kids Entertainment Division and The Foundation, as well as Zodiak Rights’ Kids & Family TV sales division.  All Zodiak Kids TV sales will be handled from London by the Zodiak Kids sales team, which is lead by Karen Vermeulen, SVP/Global TV Sales and Co-production, while each production company and their respective licensing teams will manage its own consumer products and licensing.  Last year the Zodiak Kids production companies produced 350+ episodes of new programming, including episodes of shows such as Totally Spies, Gormiti, Street Football, Sally Bollywood, Waybuloo, Dani’s House, Mister Maker, and The Qpiz.


DreamWorks Animation is teaming with cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County) to develop his popular Flawed Dogs kid’s picture book and novel to the big screen.  Breathed will serve as executive producer on the animated feature film.  Alchemy Ink’s Fonda Snyder is representing Breathed.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a co-development deal to co-produce and distribute two new kid-targeted shows, co-developed by Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment (RHCSE), a joint venture between Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) and Komixx Entertainment.  The two projects, Fish Head Steve and The Amazing Adventures of Charlie Small, which will begin as TV properties, are based on original RHCB stories and will be jointly financed by RHCSE and FME, with FME will handle worldwide distribution, licensing and home entertainment rights.

  • Fish Head Steve quirky “comedy-soap” follows daily life in the town of Spumville, where the heads of the townspeople have mysteriously been swapped out for household objects and family pets.  The project is based on a comic strip by Jamie Smart, which was originally published in the kid-aimed weekly comic, the DFC.
  • The Amazing Adventures of Charlie Small revolves around Charlie, a fearless boy, and his travels through time and space.  Created by Nick Ward, The Amazing Adventures of Charlie Small is a popular series published by RHCB.

Columbia Pictures reveals the title of its upcoming 3D Spider-Man movie is (insert drum roll) The Amazing Spider-Man ( www.theamazingspiderman-movie.com ).  The Amazing Spider-Man is slated for release on July 3, 2012, the new movie stars Andrew Garfield as Spidey.  A Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures, the movie also stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field.  Marc Webb directs the movie from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Vroom VroomJohn Turturro and Eddie Izzard join the voice cast of Disney/Pixar‘s animated feature film Cars 2, per THR.  Turturro will lend his voice to the Italian racecar, Francesco Bernoulli, while Izzard will voice former oil tycoon Miles Axelrod, who has had himself transformed into an electric car in an ongoing search for an environmentally safe energy source.  Cars 2 will open wide June 24, 2011.


The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, will make a special taped appearance on Cartoon Network‘s upcoming Hall of Game Awards ( www.hallofgame.com ) this coming weekend.  During her taped message, Mrs. Obama, who is the national spokesperson and co-founder of the Let’s Move! Initiative, will announce a set of schools that have successfully created healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity via the USDA HealthierUS School Challenge.  Hosted by skateboarding icon, Tony Hawk, Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game Awards airs Friday, February 25, at 7p, and celebrates kids favorite sports stars and sports moments of the year.

Redakai: Conquer The Kairu (52×26), a new animated adventure series co-produced by Spin Master and Zodiak Kids/Marathon Media and based on Spin Master’s new boy-centric action property, is set to air on Cartoon Network US in the second half of 2011.  Redakai: Conquer the Kairu revolves around Ky (15), a martial arts student who sets out on a quest to find the Kairu, an ancient alien energy force.  With the help of two friends, Ky travels the world looking for the Kairu to protect it from his extraterrestrial teen opponents, while hoping one day he will become the greatest Kairu warrior  a Redakai.  Spin Master, which is showcasing the series at Toy Fair in NY this week, will roll out a trading card game and toy line based on the series following its TV debut.  Cartoon Network Enterprises will serve as the exclusive licensing agent for Redakai in the US and Canada.  Zodiak Kids/Marathon Media holds worldwide TV distribution rights to the series and all licensing and merchandising rights, excluding North America.

YTV (Canada) is set to premiere two new series in March.  The kid/family-targeted network will first launch its new live-action comedy Mr. Young on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30p, followed by the debut of its new game show Splatalot on Monday, March 14 at 7p.

  • Mr. Young (26×30) follows Adam, a 14-year-old college grad that is starting his first job as a high school science teacher.  Things are, of course, complicated by the fact that Adam is the same age as his students.  Created by Dan Signer (writer/producer Suite Life on Deck), the series is and produced by Thunderbird Films in association with YTV.
  • A physical medieval-themed game show, Splatalot (26×30) sets teen contestants to compete in three rounds, including Cross the Moat, Storm the Castle, and Steal the Crown. The game features an obstacle course in the medieval castle, which includes a sludge-filled moat and a group of Defenders that try to protect the castle from the Attacker teens.  The show is hosted by Matt Chin and Jason Agnew, and is produced by marblemedia in association with YTV.

Atlantyca Entertainment acquires Dreamfarm, a Milan-based packager of kid’s books, and subsequently establishes the new business Atlantyca Dreamfarm.  The deal brings together Atlantyca chairman Pietro Marietti, also of publisher Edizioni Piemme, with Marcella Drago, owner of Dreamfarm.  Under the deal Atlantyca Dreamfarm will produce projects based on Dreamfarm titles and possibly other titles.  Additionally, noted author Pierdomenico Baccalario serves as Publisher in Chief at Atlantyca, where he will develop ideas for kid’s book series that will be exploited by Atlantyca, along with foreign publishers via Atlantyca’s Foreign Rights Sales Department, across multiple platforms.

Archie Productions, a UK indie kid/entertainment company, gets the go ahead from CiTV and ITV Breakfast for another season (26×22) of the K7-12 aimed magazine style review series The Cool Stuff Collective.  Fourteen of the new episodes will air now through April, with the remaining 12 debuting October through December 2011.  The show will run on CiTV on ITV1 on Saturdays at 9a and Sundays at 7:55a. The studio-based series is hosted by Sy Thomas (The Kids Choice Awards, Me:TV, Slime Across the UK, Little Howards Big Question). Hasbro‘s brands, including Nerf and Supersoakers, will serve as sponsors for the new season.

Distribution360 acquires rights to distribute the Cartoon Network UK version of Skatoony, a mixed animation/live-action quiz show adventure, to French and German-speaking Europe as well as Spain. The company will also distribute the North American version of Skatoony, which is produced by marblemedia, to the same territories. Skatoony (UK) airs on Cartoon Network UK.  Skatoony (North America) was commissioned by Teletoon Canada, and airs on the kid-targeted network in English and French.  Co-founded by two Canadian production companies, marblemedia and Seven24 Films, Distribution360’s kids slate also includes Splatalot, Ambition Skatecamp, This is Daniel Cook, and This is Emily Yeung for international distribution.


Nickelodeon names Spin Master as the master toy licensee for its live-action TV series Victorious, which stars Victoria Justice.  Spin Master is debuting a line of products, which includes fashion dolls and playsets, this week at Toy Fair in NY.  Products set for release in October 2011 include Make it Shine doll, a Victoria doll that sings Make It Shine (the series theme song) and also let’s kids hear fans going wild; Tori Doll  features Tori in fashions from the Birthweek Song episode and seven points of articulation; Locker Decorator  decorate and personalize mini-lockers with stickers; Microphone  kids can sing the theme song with Tori or sing on their own with instrumentals, there are also sound effects and applause.

In other Victorious news, Nickelodeon Consumer Products and Sakar International will release a line of consumer electronics and accessories based on the series beginning this fall.  Products will include MP3/4 players, boomboxes and karaoke machines to text messengers, doorbell answering machines, digital cameras and portable DVD players.  The line will be initially available exclusively at Toys ‘R’ Us. Non-electronic merchandise, such as computer sleeves and gaming accessories, are being sold through multiple channels and are available now. Victorious is a co-production with Sony Music.

Cartoon Network Enterprises signs new apparel and accessories partners and expands existing partner offerings for the animated series Adventure Time with Finn & Jake.  New licensee set to introduce product this spring include: Underboss-Undergirl (juniors and young men’s underwear, sleepwear and robes); Hot Properties (magnets, key chains); High IntenCity (jewelry, hair and novelty items).  Existing partners expanding their deals this spring include: Bioworld (expands placement of bags and headwear to special and mid-tier stores); Mighty Fine (additional junior and tween t-shirts, knit tops and fleece); Changes (boys and young men’s t-shirts, accessories); PS Brands/Planet Sox (hosiery for kids and adults).  Created by Pendleton Ward, Adventure Time is produced in partnership with Frederator Studios, and airs on Cartoon Network, Mondays at 8p.

Alcon Entertainment (The Blind Side) and David Yates, CEO/Clearwater Marine Aquarium, tap Joy Tashjian Marketing Group (JTMG) as the exclusive licensing agent for Alcon’s upcoming 3D family movie, Dolphin Tale.  Financed and produced by Alcon Entertainment and distributed worldwide by Warner Bros., Dolphin Tale stars Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson.  Directed by Charles Martin Smith, Dolphin Tale is based on the true story of a boy who befriends a dolphin that last her tail in a crab trap, and how the boy motivates everyone to help find doctors that create a prosthetic tail for the dolphin.  The movie is set for release in 3,000+ theaters this year.
