Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Formula Fun Entertainment, a UK-based TV production company, enters into a distribution deal with Germany’s m4e for its CGI animated preschool series Franco and Formula Fun (52×11, working title).  With pre-sale deals completed in 28 countries, the series is slated to debut in spring 2012.  Under the deal m4e will serve as the worldwide TV, home entertainment and consumer products distributor for the series.  The series revolves around six-year-old Franco and his super powered transforming car pals as they set off on adventures around the world.  The m4e Group will distribute the property through its subsidiary Telescreen B.V., which is based in The Netherlands. The consumer products side of the business as well as the brand management will be handled by m4e AG based in Munich, Germany.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will debut the season finales of two of its series on Friday, December 10, 2010, with Ben 10: Ultimate Alien season culminates in an hour-long finale at 7:30p, followed by the season ender of Generator Rex at 8:30p.

Nick at Nite will host a week of star-studded premiere episodes of the stop-motion animated series Glenn Martin, DDS, Monday-Friday, December 20-24 at 10p.  Leading up to the week of new episodes is the first Glenn Martin, DDS one-hour special, Camp, which debuts Friday, December 17 at 10p and features Jimmy Kimmel.  The new episodes will feature guest stars including Fergie, Elijah Wood, Bradley Whitford, Cheri Oteri, Jason Alexander, George Takei, Don Johnson, Ashley Tisdale, Jennette McCurdy, Chris Parnell, Paul Adelstein, Fran Drescher, Allison Janney, Jonathan Frakes, Rob Riggle, DJ Qualls and Patton Oswalt.

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announces nominees for 38th Annual Annie Awards, which recognize the best in animated movies, TV, commercials, shorts, video games and individual achievement.  The winners will be announced at ceremony held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in LA.  While I’m happy to report there are some 25 categories, below are just a few of the categories and nominees for the 38th Annie Awards, with a full list available at www.annieawards.org. PBS Kids and The Jim Henson Company release the new Dinosaur Train Eggspress App ($2.99) for iPhone and iPod touch.  Based on the Dinosaur Train preschool TV series, the new educational app takes kids through three prehistoric eras while emphasizing science and math skills through the different adventures.

Nickelodeon releases the new Dora the Explorer holiday app, Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure, for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.  Based on the Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure TV special, the new Dora app ($2.99/iPhone and iPod touch, $4.99/HD version for iPad) features feature interactive storytelling mixed with mini-games.  For a limited time, the apps will be discounted at $1.99/iPhone and iPod touch and $3.99/iPad.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic Media inks pack of new deals for Clifford the Big Red Dog, as it prepares to celebrate Clifford’s 50th anniversary in 2012.

  • Scholastic Media, in conjunction with Mills Entertainment, will launch Clifford the Big Red Dog: A Big Family Musical.  The family-targeted live show is set to make stops in 60 markets focuses on the values of Clifford’s “Big Ideas”
  • In the plush category, Russ Berrie will create a mix of Clifford plush and “plush-plus” products, as well as gift products (e.g. picture frames, key chains, nightlights, and mugs) for the US and Canada.  Zoobies will create Clifford-branded plushes that convert into pillows, blankets and sleeping bags.
  • New deals for Clifford-based games and educational toys have been signed with The Canadian Group for board games, jigsaw puzzles, magnetic play sets, and Twisterz Toys for educational toys including the Clifford Category Matcher.
  • Ranir signs on to develop a line of Clifford toothbrushes for kids, which will initially be exclusive to CVS stores, and then available everywhere in 2011.
  • VM Global Manufacturing is creating a collection of Clifford outdoor toys for preschoolers including scooters, wagons, tricycles, and bicycles.

Bulldog Licensing completes two new deals for Monkey, featured over the last 10-years in TV ads, ITV digital and PG Tips among others, with Posh Paws and GB Eye.  Under the new licensing pacts, Posh Paws will produce a line of plush featuring Monkey, which will include talking plush and beanies.  GB Eye will introduce a line of posters featuring Monkey.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon promotes Keiren Fisher to SVP/Series Production, West Coast.  Fisher will head up production of Nickelodeon’s live-action series produced on the west coast as well as managing operations at the network’s production facilities at Nick on Sunset and Paramount Studios.  She will report dually to Alison Dexter, EVP/Production and Lee Ann Larsen, SVP/Production.  Fisher, who has been with Nickelodeon for 13 years, previously produced a range of programming including Discovery Channel’s Eco Challenge: Australia, HBO US Comedy Arts Festival, Kennedy Center on Concert of the Americans for the White House, among other projects.  Congrats Keiren!

Amit Desai is named SVP/Franchise Management, DC Entertainment at Warner Bros.  He will develop and implement franchise strategies for DC properties including Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Flash, MAD Magazine, and Vertigo titles.  Desai will be based in Burbank and will report to John Rood, EVP/Sales, Marketing and Business Development.  Desai, who joined Warner Bros. in 2004, most recently oversaw Warner Home Video’s non0theatrical family and animation business.  He is credited with the launch of new franchises such as DC Universe, a series of animated original movies inspired by DC Comics graphic novels.  He previously toiled in brand management and marketing for Disney, and in marketing at Nestle and American Express.

Archie Comics names Alex Segura as Executive Director/Publicity and Marketing.  Most recently, Segura was Publicity Manager at DC Comics.  He was essential in the launch of DC’s fist daily blog, The Source, and in its various publicity efforts.  Segura previously toiled as a writer and editor for The Miami Herald, Wizard Magazine and Newsarama.
