CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

12/07/04

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 7, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

You gotta figure ABC has to be pretty confident to preempt its highest rated series for a made-for TV movie – sweeps or not – and that confidence was well founded on Sunday night.  ABC delivered with a 5.7/14 A18-49 for the night that included the movie The Five People You Meet in Heaven, according to fast nationals from Nielsen Media Research.  Fox was #2 for the night with a 4.6/11, followed by NBC 3.3/8, CBS 2.9/7, WB 1.0/2.  At 7pm Fox’s NFL Runover easily won the hour with a 5.0/13 while CBS and ABC tied at 3.4/9 for the same hour. ABC owned the next three hours with its movie, scoring a healthy 6.5/15.  Fox as the chief competition at 8pm with a 4.1/10 for the hour, while it was NBC closest during the 9p hour with a 4.3/10, and during the 10p hour with a 4.7/11

Tonight’s Premiere:
WB:  High School Reunion, 9p
Telemundo: La Mujer en el Espejo (The Woman in the Mirror), 8p

CBS has extended its deal with The Young and The Restless for an additional five years.  Y&R is currently in its 32nd year and pulls in approx 5 million viewers daily, on average.

And the new face of late night comedy is ….. (insert drumroll here) …. Craig Ferguson! Ferguson has been named the new host of The Late Late Show, replacing Craig Kilborn, airing at 1235am.       Ferguson starts on January 3.

Casting / Development / Production

  • Lifetime has ordered up 13 episodes of a new reality/cameras-in-the-home series called I Married a Princess, starring Catherine Oxenberg and her husband Casper van Dien and their blended family of five children.  Oxenburg is in fact royalty – daughter of Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia.
  • Elsewhere at Lifetime, the net has ordered a pilot project called Tripping the Prom Queen from exec prod Jon Avnet, based on the non-fiction book Tripping the Prom Queen: How Far Women Will Go to Get What They Want, by Susan Shapiro Barash (St. Martin’s Press), according to Variety.
  • And if that’s not enough, Lifetime has also ordered a pilot of reality show Sergeant.  In this project, the parents are sent off on a relaxing trek, while a military drill sergeant type enters the home to get it, and its remaining short inhabitants, back in shape, per Variety.  This pilot project will likely air as a special in 2005.
  • Touchstone TV has signed writer/producer John Eisendrath to a two year development deal to develop/write/produce a project called The Catch along with creator/exec prod JJ Abrams. The drama project is about bounty hunters and has already been cast with Orlando Jones and Greg Grunberg.   Eisendrath will also work on other projects for Touchstone.  According to HOllywood Reporter, other projects on the barby for Eisendrath include a scripted boxing series for ESPN; a script commitment from ABC for a project called Wanted about FBI agents tracking down the Ten Most Wanted; and a drama for Fox about a woman divorce lawyer.

Telemundo‘s newest production, La Mujer en el Espejo (The Woman in the Mirror) will begin airing today at 8 pm.  In a magical transformation Juliana appears as the beautiful, successful Maritza by day but by night and by mirror she shows as a kind but plain woman loved by those close to her.  It is a story of dual worlds and the price to be paid for vanity.  The show stars Paola Rey and Juan Alfonso Baptista.

King World has cleared CSI: Miami in 80% of the country for two year deal beginning in Fall 2006.  The deal is similar to the original CSI series – that is 2 years, weekend plays only, 2 eps per weekend.  On the same vein, CSI: NY is expected to debut in broadcast syndication in 2008.  Clearances for CSI Miami in the top 20 are:  WCBS/NY, KCBS/LA; WBBM/Chicago; KYW/Phil; WBZ/Boston; KPIX/San Fran; KTVT/Dallas; WUPA/Atlanta; WKBD/Detroit; KHOU/Houston; KSTW/Seattle; WTOG/Tampa; WCCO/Minneapolis; KTVK/Phoenix; WEWS/Cleveland; WFOR/Miami; KCNC/Denver; KCRA/Sacramento; and WKCF/Orlando.

Univision‘s November primetime Sweep period this year rated as its highest ever for the Hispanic 18-49 and 18-34 viewing groups.  This translates into a 6% and 13% increase respectively for the network over last year’s November ratings.  Its 7-10 pm novela programming block saw a 13% (18-49) and 23% (18-34) growth spurt.  Univision’s new Lo Veremos Todo con Niurka y Bobby show came out in front when compared to the same period last year with 12% (18-49) and 19% (18-34) increase.  Don Francisco Presenta grew its viewing audience by 6% (18-49) and 13% (18-34) with Cristina pulling in higher increases with 38% (18-49) and 49% (18-34).

TeleFutura saw its highest Sweep primetime ratings ever with Hispanic adults in November.  The network’s primetime Cine de Las Estrellas showed a 40% growth for the Hispanic 18-49 year old age group with the 18-34 year old viewers increasing by 46% when compared to the same time period in 2003.  Solo Boxeo drew another increase for the 18-34 (22%) and 18-49 (13%) group.  TeleFutura’s game show, 100 Mexicanos Dijeron, saw the most growth from last year with a 50% increase for its 18-49 group and a 64% growth spurt for Hispanic 18-34 year olds.  November 28’s semi-final Futbol Liga Mexicana (FLM) match (Atlas and Guadalajara) proved to be both the highest rated program for the Hispanic Adults 18-49 group and the FLM television broadcast since the network’s launch.

Discovery Communications, Inc., and PepsiCo Inc. will team up in a multi million dollar partnership to promote Pepsi’s new Smart Spot initiative.  The campaign is designed to help consumers identify foods that help promote a healthier lifestyle with a Smart Spot symbol.  The initiative with Discovery will last for one year, and will include six of the Discovery US networks (Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Discovery Health, Travel and FitTV) as well as the Discovery website. The networks will all carry a variety of on-air ads with each network providing other specific promotional tie ins

Clear Channel Radio has signed off on a five year deal with Fox News Radio wherein the latter will be the chief supplies of news content to approx 100 Clear Channel radio stations, including LA, San Diego, Atlanta and Phoenix. And in exchange, as part of the agreement, Fox News Radio will gain access to Clear Channel station’s local news content.

A new Nike TV ad, Chamber of Fear isn’t flying in China and in fact has been barred from airing. In the commercial, the NBA’s LeBron James fights a cartoon kung fu master.  It has already aired on CCTV’s sports channel and local stations.  China’s State Administration for Radio, Film and Television stated that it “violates regulations that mandate that all advertisements in China should uphold national dignity and interest and respect the motherland’s culture… It also goes against rules that require ads not to contain content that blasphemes national practices and cultures…”

I love a good holiday tradition. Be it Grandma’s special holiday cookies baked every year, or the traditional snowball fight at each season’s first snowfall, or just a cheese grater atop the tree, traditions are good.  This year, as in past years, ABC will present The Sound of Music on Christmas night.  Warms the cockles, don’t it?

Brett Bouttier has been named VP/New Business and Sales Strategy for Telepictures, reporting to both Estey McLoughlin, EVP/GM Telepictures Prods; and Jim Paratore, EVP/Warner Bros. Doemstic Television Distribution. , has been recruited for the newly created post of VP, new business and sales strategy.  Brett’s directive is to look for new opportunities in the world of product placement in both network and syndication Telepictures productions (including Bachelor, The Will), VOD and direct to video.

Talk show exec producer Amy Rosenblum (Maury Povich show) has been recruited by NBC’s Today Show as a consultant.  Rosenblum’s roots were as a booker for CBS News, so the daytime talk show business is not her only strong point.  In the past year, Today Show chief competitor, Good Morning America has eaten into Today  Show’s lead, with just a little more than a half million viewers between them now. Certainly Amy’s background in news combined with her daytime talker sense of grabbing ratings, could be an asset for Today.

Comcast Cable’s Comcast Spotlight named Phillip Woodie as Director of Multicultural Sales.  He will oversee the expansion of the company’s multicultural unit’s offerings, act as liaison with advertisers and agencies and collaborate with the National Cable Communications’ multicultural office.  Philip was previously as president of sales and marketing at Azteca America.  He will be based in New York.

here! named Karen Flischel as General Manager. She will oversee brand strategy and management.  Karen was previously with Nickelodeon as managing director of Nickelodeon’s international unit. She will be based in New York and report to President/COO Andrew Tow.
