HARRY POTTER IS MAGIC AT THE BOX OFFICE Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 17-Day Total: $230,000,000* HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 6, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. ABC News has announced dual anchors for World New Tonight with Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff, as of January 2. Additionally, the news will be expanded, which means for the first time there will be a live edition of the Evening News on the west coast. Vargas will continue as co-anchor of 20/20. Woodruff had been the weekend edition anchor, and both Woodruff and Vargas have substituted several times since the absence and subsequent death of Peter Jennings. The duo will anchor live editions of the news three times during the course of the evening, at 630p, 830p and 930p, to be live across the time zones. * MORE GOOD STUFF *King World has announced the Rachael Ray show is a firm go for next fall. The 60m daily strip series has been sold thus far to more than 70% of the country and cleared in all Top 25 markets as well as 46 of the Top 50 markets. Twentieth Television today its new court show strip series, Christina’s Court, is a firm go for next fall, with host Christina Perez. The show has been cleared in 55% of the US, including New York, LA, Chicago, Philly, Boston, Dallas, DC, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Tampa, Pittsburgh, Raleigh Durham, Nashville, Kansas City, Columbus, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Dayton, Syracuse, Oklahoma, Cincinnati and Richmond. Thus far, ABC Television Network is the only television outlet to provide the Apple Video iPod with programming for download. Now, ESPN is considering a similar move, tho according to ABC Sports head George Bodenheimer, no decision is imminent. And here’s another – NBC is looking to jump into the Video iPod pond, and take with it several shows from NBC, USA and Sci Fi Channel. Neither side is confirming the deal at the moment, though as you might imagine there is plenty of rumor that NBC may include portions of the upcoming Winter Olympics in the deal. USA’s Nashville Star will be hosted in the upcoming season by Wynonna Judd and Cowboy Troy. Nashville Star kicks off on March 7. Mitsubishi Electric has signed up as the charter sponsor of MHD, MTV Networks Music Group’s new high definition music channel. Scheduled to launch on January 16, 2006, MHD will feature original music-based programming sponsored by Mitsubishi Electric, as well as HDTV acquisitions and original content from the MTVN family of channels. Discovery Networks International is launching a new international franchise called Discovery Channel’s Sci-Files in May 2006. The programming will be a “marriage of science fantasy and science fact” according to the network, with series and specials focusing on science of the future, the unknown and outer space. Sci-Files will air on Discovery Channel in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East as well as on the U.S.-based Discovery en Espanol. Programming will include How Techies Changed the World with William Shatner, Sci-Fi Changed My Life and Strangest UFO Stories of All Time. ZenithOptimedia Group has lowered its 2005 expectations for U.S. and global ad spending since its last quarterly update outlook. The company foresees a 2.9% increase for U.S. spending rather than the earlier prediction of 3.6%. International ad spending is down 0.4% to 4.8% from the earlier 5.2%. According to Media Post, the Publicis media buying agency commented that the revision is following the world economy’s long-term ad growth. Ad spending growth in 2005 was more moderate than 2004. ZenithOptimedia attributed the higher 2004 spending growth to major sporting events and the U.S. Presidential race. The agency predicted that 2006 spending would increase as a result of the Winter Olympics, the World Cup and several U.S. key elections. It lowered its predictions for next year from 5.7% to 5.1% for U.S. ad spending and 6.2% to 5.9% for global ad spending. Internet spending is expected to be 4.6% of all ad expenditures for 2005 (a 0.3% increase over last prediction) with a 6.4% share predicted by 2008. The Weather Channel is getting into the retail business with its partner in clothing, L.L. Bean. The two will provide a product line under the title The Weather Channel Outerwear by L.L. Bean. The line will go on sale on December 26 with the first item, a jacket dubbed Weather Challenger which retails for $129, and will be available in stores as well as on the L.L. Bean website. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has ordered a pilot of a new project from Steven Bochco and writer Callie Khouri called Hollis and Rae. The drama focuses on women – one a police officer, the other a Prosecutor, and also best friends. Unlike so many other Bochco dramas, this one will not be set in New York City, but rather in a city down south. Khouri won an Oscar for screenwriting the film Thelma & Louise. NBC’s E-Ring had added Kerr Smith (Dawson’s Creek) to the regular cast in the role of Bobby Wilkerson, a gung-ho member of the Pentagon’s Special Ops team whom Smith has played in three earlier episodes this Fall. Here’s one for all of you Eddie Izzard fans. FX has ordered a pilot called Low Life starring Izzard. Izzard plays the father of a family of traveling con artists who suddenly decides to call it quits and settle down with his brood in a nice little town. FX has also ordered a pilot of another drama called Dirt from exec producers David Arquette and Courtney Cox, set at a tabloid newspaper with the female Editor-in-Chief at the center. There is no casting yet on this project, though Cox could end up playing the Editor in Chief role. FX will likely order one of these two pilots to go to series for this summer, though if it picks up both, the second would premiere the following summer. Law & Order: SVU viewers know that ADA Alexandra Cabot has been in the Witness Protection Program for the last couple of years. Well, she’s back, but in a different Wolf Films production for NBC called Conviction. Stephanie March who plays Cabot, joins Jordan Bridges, J. August Richards, Anson Mount, Eric Balfour, Julianne Nicholson and Milena Govich in the NBC Universal Television production. Fox has picked up a project called Happy Hour from Werner-Gold-Miller and Warner Bros. Television, about two roommates – one newly in love, and one newly scorched by love, per Variety. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *World Wrestling Entertainment has announced the hiring of Dorothy Brill as SVP/Human Resources. She will lead employee initiatives and programs to help the company achieve its growth objectives. DreamWorks Animation SKG board member and former Vice Chairman/CFO, Bank of America Lewis Coleman has been named Pres/DreamWorks Animation SKG, reporting CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg. Coleman will work with Katzenberg and COO, Ann Daly to further DreamWorks’ goal of producing two CG animated movies a year as well as expand the company into business including direct-to-video movies, licensing, Broadway musicals and live entertainment. Executives who previously reported to the Katzenberg will now report to Coleman. In keeping with the company policy of maintaining an independent majority on its board, Coleman has resigned as a director and as Chairman/Audit Committee. He is expected to be re-elected as a director when the balance of independent directors on the board is sufficient. Recently elected DreamWorks Animation SKG board member, Karl von der Heyden, formerly Vice Chairman/CFO, PepsiCo, has taken over Coleman’s role as Chair/Audit Committee. ESPN has named Len DeLuca SVP/Programming & Acquisitions, and Chuck Gerber to EVP/Collegiate Sports, both execs reporting to John Wildhack, SVP/Programming Planning and Development. Len will oversee programming and acquisitions for ABC Sports as well as ESPN. Chuck will be responsible for college sports event programming for both ESPN and ABS Sports. NBC has upped Scott Williams to VP/Program Research, NBC Entertainment, reporting to Sumi Barry, SVP/NBC West Coast Program Research, NBC Entertainment. Scott will be responsible for managing primary research for primetime series and The NBC Agency. He also will be involved in developing ideas to improve NBC’s program-testing methodologies.
