SHOWTIME announced it is moving forward with a documentary series exploring the human impact of climate change titled Years of Living Dangerously.  The series marks a collaboration between show executive producers James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in addition to 60 Minutes producers Joel Bach and David Gelber and climate expert Daniel Abbasi.  Film and television stars including Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Alec Baldwin will be involved as first-person narrators.  Actor Edward Norton is also expected to join the production with other names announced soon.  Reporting from the field are New York Times journalists including Thomas Friedman, Nicholas Kristof and columnist Mark Bittman as well as MSNBC host and political commentator Chris Hayes among others.  The number of episodes is still up in the air though the series is expected to have 6-8 one-hour episodes slated to air in 2013.

In other news involving Alec Baldwin, the actor-producer is remaining with NBC as he signed a two-year overall deal with Universal Television.  Baldwin will develop and produce television projects including potential starring vehicles for the studio.

FOX has ordered a new animated comedy for its Sunday night block titled Murder Police from Family Guy’s David Goodman and Jason Ruiz.  Murder Police is about a dedicated and bumbling detective and his partner as they attempt to solve crimes.  Former Family Guy showrunner Goodman and Ruiz, who is the first writer to come out of Fox and 20th Television’s joint Fox Inkubation program for aspiring animators, wrote the project which was first announced in July.  20th Television is producing where Ruiz has an overall deal.  Murder Police is expected to premiere in fall 2013.

ABC handed a script order to Alison McDonald’s (Nurse Jackie) short She Got Problems about an endearing dreamer.  McDonald will adapt the project for ABC Studios.  The single-camera comedy is about the ever-changing life of a woman who has a song in her heart but no man though she meets her match when she begins working for an outspoken mogul.

On Monday the BBC revealed it will adapt J.K. Rowling’s novel The Casual Vacancy for television.  The broadcaster’s flagship channel BBC One and BBC Drama have commissioned an exclusive adaptation of the book in a deal with The Blair Partnership, which represents the British author.  The series is expected to premiere in 2014.  Rowling will be involved on the project with the number and length of the episodes “to be decided once the creative adaptation process has formally begun.”  Production will happen through an independent company operated by Neil Blair on behalf of the Blair Partnership and Rick Senat.

Production started last week on the fifth season of TNT’s police drama Southland from Warner Bros. Television and John Wells Productions.  The series stars Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie and joining as a series regular is former guest star C. Thomas Howell.  Season five will premiere February 13 at 10p on TNT and will air in its regular timeslot on Tuesdays at 10p.

Telemundo Media inked a multi-year first-look and Production Supervision Development deal with POWWOW, an independent production and development firm serving the media industry.  As part of the new deal, Powwow and its CEO Daniel Gutman will develop new programming formats to be offered to Telemundo on a first-look basis in the genres of variety, entertainment and unscripted programming.

Howard Stern will take a second turn as judge on NBC’s America’s Got Talent for the eighth season debuting next summer.  Auditions for talent are currently underway.  The series is from FremantleMedia North America and Syco Television.

Joel Johnstone was cast in not one but two HBO series.  Johnstone was cast in the political drama Newsroom for its second season in a recurring role as Cameron, a Mitt Romney campaign staffer in New Hampshire.  Johnstone was also cast in the role of young medical student Andrew Cesario in the half-hour comedy Getting On
