Animal Planet debuts The A-List this Friday, December 7 at 9p.  With the help of celebrity in each of the 14 half-hour episodes, the series offers a unique set of classifications for the animal kingdom including biggest loudmouth, best mom and dad, and which turn flirting into a life-or-death sport.  Celebrity hosts for the series include Gilbert Gottfried, Danny Bonaduce, Colby Donaldson (of Survivor: Australia fame), and Gloria Gaynor, among others.  The A-List is produced by Animal Planet by Discovery Studios.

With its acquisition of Oxygen by NBC Universal, came layoffs.  60 people, or approx 25% of the staff, were laid off in Oxygen’s NY, LA and Dallas offices, and according to reports range across all departments and levels. NBC signed papers to picked up the female-targeted network in November and paid a reported $875 million.  Laid off employees will either be paid thru to the end of the calendar year and/or provided with a severance package, or will be offered another position within NBCU where available.

Next year, ESPN will start its fourth hi-def channel, ESPNU HD on August 28, 2008 in time for the college football season kick-off. ESPNU HD has plans to air more than 200 hi-def events the first year including live coverage of college football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, hockey among other sports. Encore presentations of ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ABC HD college sports events will also air on the new network.

Scripps Networks will offer a first-time VOD sneak peek of the HGTV Dream Home 2008 special on December 28, four days before its debut on HGTV January 1 at 9p. Two other new HGTV series will be available to preview on VOD, Sleep on It and Desperate Spaces, before their linear premieres on January 2 and January 9 respectively.

Jennifer Davidson, Cartoon Network’s SVP/Programming and Scheduling, passed away over the weekend from a sudden illness.  Jennifer, 38, is survived by her husband, their three young children, her parents, three siblings and a vast group of friends.  A viewing* is scheduled for today, December 4, from 6-9p at The Sandy Springs Funeral Home in Sandy Springs, GA. The memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, December 5, at 1p at Buckhead Church in Atlanta.  Jennifer was an early member of the Cartoon Network team, joining the network around its initial launch in 1992, and she executive produced the launch of the Boomerang channel.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Jennifer’s name to one of three charitable organizations the Davidson’s have actively supported: FRAXA, the Fragile X Research Foundation (www.fraxa.org); the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.leukemia-lymphoma.org); and BrightPoint For Children ( www.brightpointforchildren.org).  *Please note, this is newly rescheduled viewing information.
