Good morning, it’s Tuesday, December 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Clearwire CEO Benjamin Wolff promised the new WiMax venture would run an open, independent network despite the significant cash contributions from investors such as Google, Intel, Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Google does plan to develop applications that run on the platform (including Android-compatible apps) and Intel plans to sell WiMax chips to laptop manufacturers. The 4G wireless broadband service, which is being added to Sprint’s current 2.5 GHz Xohm network, hopes to start offering speeds of 2-4 Mhz/sec. downstream by 2010 in select markets. But Wolff warned the rollout could be slowed if the credit markets don’t improve. Clearwire will henceforth be branded as “Clear,” as in the tagline, “Let’s Be Clear.”
On the day iN Demand’s Mojo HD was removed from cable channel line-ups across the country, the network announced that comedian Zane Lamprey will kick off his second annual New Year’s Even Pub Crawl from London available exclusively on mojohd.com. Mojo originals such as this will continue to be available on the Mojo site, iTunes and Hulu as well as Comcast and Cox’s VOD systems.
Disney-ABC International Television (Asia Pacific) and PCCW’s IPTV service now TV announced an agreement to make a selection of US network series available on demand to Hong Kong viewers in standard and HD formats – a first for the Hong Kong market. Shows such as Lost, Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty will be made available for a separate subscription fee.
Sundance Channel‘s multiplatform coverage of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival (to be held Jan. 16-25 this year) will include a month of special programming delivered via the Sundance website, cable channel and VOD platform. Sundance’s “Festival Favorite” VOD package will feature 13 exclusive films from past festivals including Andrew Jarecki’s Capturing the Friedmans and Ryan Fleck’s Half Nelson. Original segments will be featured on the network’s minisite throughout the festival along with two new original web series. Breakfast chronicles the adventures of two independent filmmakers in New York as they produce a World War II epic. Cassidy Loves Moby is a series of 4 shorts starring the bald pop singer and a plastic Barbie-sized doll who falls in love with him.
Call for Content: Discovery Channel Canada stunt show Guinea Pig, which premieres its 3rd season on Jan. 10, is asking users to upload challenges its hosts can choose to tackle exclusively on the web.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Facebook is expanding its online authentication service Facebook Connect in the coming weeks, reports the NYTimes, which allows members to log on to other sites directly from their Facebook profile. A number of prominent publishers including Hulu, Discovery Channel and Digg will integrate the service in to their pages allowing visitors on those sites to invite their Facebook pals to join them.
Blogging software provider Six Apart (Movable Type, TypePad, Vox) is acquiring the technology behind the microblogging service Pownce and shutting down the Pownce site. Community members have 2 weeks to export their postings to other services.
News blog Huffington Post (which happens to use Six Apart’s Moveable Type software) closed on a $25 million third round of funding from Oak Investment Partners. The site plans to use the money to expand citizen and investigative journalism initiatives, verticals, video and local city editions.
Interactive television companies Ensequence and Visible World announced a partnership to provide advertisers with addressable, measurable, interactive advertising solutions through a single ETV/EBIF compliant platform. The combined solution enables advertisers to target their ads by household, geography or content; swap out creative on the fly; or even adjust content in real time.
Geotargeted online advertising company Media6° moved to full commercial launch based on successful beta tests with over two dozen brands. Media6Degrees maps the social graph of the U.S. and uses this data to provide brand marketers with scalable customized audiences. The system cross-references psychographics and geographic purchasing data to provide targeted online ad strategies.
Out-of-home media company Titan Worldwide added Delaware River’s Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) to its network, which operates rail service between Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Outgoing FCC Chairman Kevin Martin will be pushing for the launch of a no cost, smut-free nationwide wireless internet service during the FCC’s December meeting, reports The WSJ, despite objections from consumer groups and the wireless industry itself. The FCC may also consider rules to speed up carriage disputes between programmers and cable operators.
Online video services provider The FeedRoom acquired digital asset management software company ClearStory Systems. The two companies will combine resources to roll out a white label online video services division.
Advertisers who buy online post-roll ads may want to read this. Online video distribution/measurement service Tube Mogul studied the issue of follow thorough, measuring what percentage of videos clicked on are actually watched until the end. A sample of 188,055 videos on 6 top sites (YouTube was not one of them) found that 10.39% of viewers clicked away after just 10 seconds and that over half of the audience left after one minute. The longer the video, the quicker erosion; all but 16.62% of the audience left the building by the end of a 3-minute clip. Tube Mogul notes that the research indicates that overlay ads should also be placed as early as possible within the video stream.

eBay proved to the be the top online retail site on Black Friday with nearly 10 million unique visitors according to Nielsen Online. (eBay says the Wii was the most sought after product.) But eBay’s traffic increased only 7% from the previous week while the websites of brick and mortar retailers benefitted from huge spikes in traffic. Consumer Electronics was the fastest growing segment growing by 219% from 11/21 – 11/28.

Heavy.com is appointing David U.K. as Managing Director of Heavy Worldwide. David, who formerly served as VP and GM of Heavy Canada, will oversee all revenue streams for the male-targeted video site reporting to co-CEOs and co-founders Simon Assaad and David Carson.
How-to website 5min.com thinks it has come up with a solution to speed the flow of syndicated video content across the web. The start-up is introducing a new semantic video platform today dubbed VideoSeed, set up to push relevant video content to sites by integrating with individual sites’ content delivery network rather than just their existing video players. 5min publishes and curates lifestyle-themed video primers from a number of known producers including Britannica, Big Think, Next New Networks, WatchMojo and Road & Track. VideoSeed combines a network of general sites such as Answers.com with vertical publishers including Backyard Gardener, which have a contextual interest in the content. By providing an integrated text and video solution, publishers can use the system to deliver relevant clips around text-based articles, which is how so many websites are organized to begin with. Building a library of videos is great, but let’s face it – users search for information in a text-based environment. It’s much more realistic to think of video content as an enhancement to articles on the web rather than a brand new medium with which to replace text. “There are tons of video portals hosting a never ending stream of new content,” says Ran Harnevo, CEO and Co-Founder of 5min. “Delivering specific niche content to specific niche audiences is the problem we’re trying to solve.”
