Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, December 19, 2006 and this is your first early morning briefing.
VNU Group B.V., the global parent of ACNielsen and Nielsen Media Research, announced a new organization and leadership structure that will be implemented the first of year. As part of that new structure, approximately 4,000 positions will be cut, representing nearly 10% of VNU’s 42,000 worldwide employees. The job cuts will shrink overall costs by 10%. The savings will be plowed into several new initiatives such as the NielsenConnect service, newly headed up by Jon Mandel; Nielsen’s Anytime Anywhere Media which is designed to measure within the digital world, and ACNielsen Loyalty which concentrates on frequent shopper data. Also as part of the VNU announcement, Susan Whiting has been named EVP/VNU and Chairman of Nielsen Media Research.
(details below)
The Eagle has landed. Or at least the NFL Network has landed on Time Warner Cable for a freeview week. For the week of December 24-30th, NFL Network will be carried on TWC’s digital tier, which reaches 75% of TWC full subscriber base. The freeview week will include the Texas Bowl featuring local favorite Rutgers vs. Kansas State on December 28, as well as the Insight Bowl: Minnesota vs. Texas Tech on the 29th.

Since release, Martin Scorsese’s The Department has brought in over $118.9 million at the domestic box office since it’s early October release; V for Vendetta grossed $70.5 million; and The Wicker Man starring Nicholas Cage was released last fall and to date has brought in approx $23.6 million.
On New Year’s Day, PBS will stream three pilots of three potential new science series free at pbs.org and via free podcasts at the iTunes Store, prior to airing each on the PBS member stations. The three pilots will then air on consecutive Wednesdays starting the evening of January 3 (check local listings). Viewers are invited to vote on their favorite and the winning series will have a 10-week PBS run next fall. The pilots include:

Currently in beta testing with approx 6,000 users, the end view is to provide its broadband television service at no charge to consumers. (Yesterday’s item didn’t make clear it was the founders of Skype, not Skype itself.)
TBS has ordered up nine more episodes of its recently launched scripted comedy My Boys, from Pariah and Two Out Rally Prods, with Sony Pictures Television.
