GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Showtime Networks and The L Word creator/exec producer Ilene Chaiken have decided to team up again to launch a The L Word-inspired lesbian social networking website as a stand-alone business.  Set to launch simultaneously with the series' fourth season, OurChart.com will include series, original, and user- generated content with cast members Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey involved as OurChart founding partners and personal content providers.  Former RIAA chairperson/CEO, Hilary Rosen, will be OurChart's President while Beth Callaghan, recently with PlanetOut Inc. as a senior director, will be CCO.

According to a TNS poll commissioned by Bravo's
www.OutzoneTV.com , Americans were most surprised when Neil Patrick Harris came out of the closet with 44% of the vote. Former *NSYNC member Lance Bass, who revealed he was gay this past July, came in second with 19% of the vote. Of those polled, 75% said that knowing if an actor/actress is gay made no difference in their inclination to watch or not watch a specific television show or movie. Seventy-four percent think that society has become more accepting of gay and lesbian celebrities in the ten years since Ellen DeGeneres' appearance on the cover of Time announcing her sexuality. In January 2007, OutZoneTV.com will release the results of their Sexiest Gay 2007 poll, which breaks out who Americans feel are the Sexiest Gay Celebrity, Sexiest Gay-Friendly Celebrity and Sexiest Gay of the Year. The poll was conducted by TNS using their Express Online Omnibus among a nationally representative sample of A18+ on December 7-10, 2006.  Other tidbits from the poll …
  • TV outranks religion in terms of how Americans shape their opinions about the gay/lesbian lifestyle. Nearly half of respondents (47%) felt television had a larger influence on their perception of gay and lesbian lifestyles, with religion coming in second with 34%.
  • Thirteen percent of those polled said that personal experience was most important in determining their point of view about gay/lesbian lifestyles and politics played the smallest role with only 7% of votes. In terms of the media and their coverage of gay/lesbian celebrities, most Americans (66%) felt that too much time was spent on the topic.
  • As to whether there should be more gay characters or less gay characters on TV, 55% had no opinion while 35% said there should be less.
  • Sixty-six percent think the media reports too much on gay/lesbian celebrities.

Additionally, TV5MONDE and the UN have agreed that in 2007 the channel will install three television screens in the main common areas of the UN which will be tuned to the channel and other relevant French-language news programming. Also, UN Television and TV5MONDE are in discussions about expanding the channel's use of UN-produced programming on all eight TV5MONDE feeds around the world which would reach 171 million households.

A new Canadian-South African TV series co-production that may be of interest… Jozi-H takes an in-depth albeit fictional look at South Africa's many problems, including violent crime such as high gun crime numbers and sexual abuse, high AIDS levels in its population, and more. It is produced by Canada's Inner City Films and South Africa's Morula Pictures. Set in a fictional Johannesburg hospital, the series plays off like ER with fast editing sequences and intertwined storylines as well as a multiracial and more global cast, according to Reuters.  Filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa over 6 months, the 13-episode Jozi-H premiered in Canada in October and will air in South Africa in May 2007.
