Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
In a match made for television, the NCAA is bringing the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships back to television, inking a deal with Golf Channel to carry the tournaments beginning in 2014. Through the deal, Golf Channel is slated to showcase three days of action from the 2014 men’s championship, which will be hosted by Wichita State University and begin with 30 teams and six student-athletes competing over 54 holes. Golf Channel will then air tournament action from both the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships beginning in 2015.
Sunday’s Pittsburgh/Dallas overtime game handed CBS Sports with the weekend’s top overnight household rating/share of any network in the metered markets, according to Nielsen. The matchup drew a 17.2/30, peaking with a 20.8/38 from 7:30-8p. Despite the high marks, however, that number is down from last year’s 19.5/36 pitting New England and Denver that scored as the network’s second-highest-rated regular-season game since 1998. NFL early regional coverage drew a 10.8/22, for a 50% markup over last year’s 7.2/15.
ABC and ESPN announced details for their five-pack of Christmas Day NBA Games next week. The holiday will mark ABC’s first two NBA broadcasts of the season with Knicks/Lakers at 3p, followed by Thunder/Heat at 5:30p. Meanwhile, for the first time, Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Heather Cox will call two games from the Staples Center on Christmas Day beginning with the Lakers game, followed by Nuggets/Clippers at Staples Center at 10:30p on ESPN. ESPN3 will offer live coverage of the Staples Center changeover on Christmas Day, as the crew swaps from the Lakers set to the Clippers set. ESPN’s Christmas Day coverage tips off at noon with Celtics/Nets, followed by Rockets/Bulls at 8p and the Clippers game at 10:30p.
The return of boxing to CBS for the first time in 15 years drew a 1.3 overnight on Saturday, according to Nielsen, holding 90% of its audience from the Butler/Purdue matchup that led in to the telecast.
CBS Sports Network will debut new studio show Wally’s World and bring back its veteran prime time college basketball studio shows Courtside with Seth Davis and Inside College Basketball this week. Wally’s World debuts Wednesday at 6:30p, featuring Wally Szczerbiak offering his take on news and buzz from around the sport. Meanwhile Courtside and Inside the NBA return to the lineup tonight at 7p and 10p respectively.
Sans league action, NHL Network announced that the channel will offer coverage of the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship with 18 live games on deck for US audiences, including every single game played by Team USA. Games will also be streamed live on NHL.com for U.S. viewers only. Coverage starts on Dec. 20 with a pre-tournament matchup between USA and Finland.
ESPN is lining up a half-hour Pardon the Interruption Special: Notre Dame Timeline for today at 7:30p on ESPN, and released online through Grantland.com. The special will look back at the past decade of Notre Dame Football, beginning with the firing of head coach Bob Davie in 2001 and culminating with this season’s berth in the BCS Championship Game.
