Alloy Media + Marketing has launched Teen.com, a new distributed media content and advertising platform for teen-targeted web properties. The new site aims to provide marketers with display and advertising programs to reach teens online. Included in the Teen.com network of websites are Habbo, RockYou, Meez and under a new deal, Zwinky.com, as well as Allow, Delia*s, CCS, and Sugarloot. Current Teen.com clients include advertisers such as Procter & Gamble, Verizon Wireless, the CW Network, New Line Cinema, Sony Pictures, and Nintendo among others.
Elsewhere, Alloy Media + Marketing has entered into a partnership with Blowtorch Entertainment to develop and produce media and promotional content targeted to college audiences for upcoming Blowtorch feature films and its related online/offline content.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Joining the cast of Fox’s live-action movie adaptation of Dragonball is actress Emmy Rossum, per Variety. Rossum will take on the role of Bulma, the lead female in the story playing opposite the previously announced Justin Chatwin as Goku and James Marsters as Lord Piccolo. Based on the original manga by Akira Toriyama, which became a popular anime series, the movie features a screenplay by Ben Ramsey and is being directed by James Wong.
MORE KIDS STUFF
One becomes two on December 31 when Nickelodeon’s Noggin and The N officially spilt, each becoming its own 24/7 network, at 6p and 6a respectively. The programming plan for the new Noggin and The N is as follows:
- Targeted to preschoolers/families, Noggin will continue to run commercial free and maintain its current channel space. The network celebrates both its new status and the New Year with a TV movie marathon, December 31, 6a-11p, which includes the premiere of a new Franklin movie, Franklin and the Turtle Lake Treasure (90 min). Additionally, the new animated series Toot & Puddle (26×30) based on the books of the same name by author Holly Hobbie, premieres in fall 2008. The network has also picked up a second season (26×30) of the animated series Pinky Dinky Doo.
- Moving into 24/7 mode on New Year’s Eve at 6a, the teen-targeted The N, moves to new channel space and will feature advertising in the latter part of its day. New Year’s Eve the network celebrates with 24 Reasons to Love The N in 2008, a 12-hr marathon from 12p. Hosted by cast members from Degrassi’s, Just Jordan’s Lil’ JJ and Unfabulous the evening features episodes of The N shows as well as a sneak peek at the network’s 2008 plans. Returning and new series in 2008 include new seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation (on January 18, 8p) and About A Girl (January 19, 8p); Degrassi in Kenya (30 min) a special is set for February, with a new season of South of Nowhere premiering April 2008. New to the network next year are the new reality shows Queen Bees and The N’s Student Body, are slated for July and August 2008 respectively, and followed in October by the comedy The Assistants. Acquired series joining the lineup include Saved by the Bell (January 14), with That 70’s Show (June).
Taffy Entertainment inks additional international sales for the CGI animated preschool series Dive Olly Dive! (52×11), with broadcasters in Europe, Asia and Latin America: GMTV (the UK) picks up the series for the kid’s programming block Wakey Wakey on ITV1 and CiTV channel; TVE (Spain) takes the series for its terrestrial TV and digital kid’s channel Clan; also the series is picked up by Cartoon Network Latin America and MTV3 in Finland, Cineplex Thailand and TPI in Indonesia. Additionally, local distributors in Poland, South Africa and English-speaking territories in Africa have acquired Dive Olly Dive.
Portfolio Entertainment has completed broadcast deals in the US for several of kid-targeted series: Lifeskool acquires the exclusive on-demand rights for Spellz (52×15) and Ruffus The dog (26×15); meanwhile Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters takes the broadcast rights for Groundling Marsh (65×30), Ruffus the Dog and Panda bear Daycare (26×15).
MARKETING/LICENSING
If you are in Midtown Manhattan today you are likely to see quite a bit of yellow, but not just any yellow, Simpsons yellow, which no doubt has its own Pantone color. Anyhow, to celebrate today’s DVD and Blu-ray release of The Simpsons Movie, Fox Home Entertainment has planned events for Bryant Park, where The Pond (a seasonal ice skating rink) will be yellow and some “characters” will be skating along with a musical performance, 2,500 mega-donut balloons a 250 foot Homer and all sorts of give-a-ways (e.g. Ben & Jerry’s one-day-only ice-cream The Simpsons Movie Duff & D’oh!Nuts). Meanwhile the lights of the Empire State Building will be yellow and in Times Square yellow Santa hats and balloons will be handed out.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Barry Stagg is appointed SVP/Corporate Communications for 4Kids Entertainment. He will report to Al Kahn, Chairman and CEO. Stagg is responsible for developing a communications program to build awareness of 4Kids properties and operations and new brands and other business efforts. Most recently, Stagg headed communications efforts for new media companies including Amp’d Mobile, SMS.ac and Diino.com. Previously, Stagg toiled for a number of entertainment companies including Fox Family Worldwide, Lorimar/Warner Bros. Television and Embassy Television (now Sony Pictures Television). While at FWW he led the communications efforts for the Power Rangers worldwide, including the launch on Fox Family Channel, as well helping to build Fox Kids.
Wizard Entertainment ups Darren Sanchez to VP/manufacturing. Reporting to COO Fred Pierce, Sanchez is now responsible for production of all Wizard publications, which include Toy Wishes, Wizard, Toyfare and Anime Insider among others. He joined the company 10 years ago as Production Director. Outside of Wizard, Sanchez serves as Publisher of After Hours Press, an indie comic label, as well as a creator/writer of several of its titles including, Impossible Tales, Celestial Alliance and Foxwood Falcons, the latter of which he is adapting as a novel. Additionally, he is producing and co-writing the feature film, Cry, for Lights out Productions.
