Plastic is dead. The era of the DVD – which had been one of the fastest growing and most popular consumer electronics innovations ever – is fading fast, according to new research from In-Stat. The company expects double-digit declines in retail sales of physical discs, to the tune of a drop of $4.6 billion from 2009 to 2014. But content providers shouldn’t fear because the money is simply shifting to digital outlets. The market for paid download and streaming should grow from $2.3 billion to $6.3 billion within five years, In-Stat said. “Video disc rentals will continue their significant decline,” said Keith Nissen, Principal Analyst. “Netflix is already shifting its focus to online streaming, and Red Box is evaluating a similar strategy. The convenience and utility of the online offerings are simply too compelling. Ultimately, it will be impossible for physical disc kiosks to compete with the in-home or in-store download-to-rent business model.” The revenue for TV downloads in the US will triple between 2010 and 2014, with online subscription revenue closing in on $3.5 billion by 2014. 
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Current TV said its adding to its original programming lineup with the nine-episode documentary series 4th and Forever, slated for an April 3rd premiere. The show will follow the 2010 football season of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, which has turned out more NFL players than any high school in the country, Current TV said. Sports Illustrated has called the high school the “Sports School of the Century” for having produced such notables as Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson and offensive lineman Winston Justice; the Arizona Cardinal’s linebacker Pago Togafau, Washington Redskin’s safety Omar Stoutmire and the Houston Texan’s linebacker Darnell Bing, as well as San Diego Padres’ Hall of Fame baseball star Tony Gwynn, the Seattle Mariners’ Milton Bradley and former professional tennis player Billie Jean King. The show is produced by Brian Graden Media, Jupiter Entertainment, DLP Entertainment and Global Content Partners, LLC.
 
The soon-to-launch 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX has added several new original series to its slate including the show Bullproof on the world of professional bull riding, High Octane on thrill sports like bungee jumping, motocross and jet skiing, and Making the Brand, on how a wide range of products are made on a mass scale.
 
TV producer FremantleMedia of American Idol fame is launching a new Web series with Buick as the advertiser and MSN as the distributor. The show re:discover – The Soul of Your Favorite Cities is billed as an interactive travel guide and will include video and additional travel content on the cities profiled, Fremantle said.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Online video tech company Taboola inked a deal with Canadian news provider Canoe.ca to integrate Taboola’s video recommendations into the news site to help users discover more videos to watch. Taboola’s technology appears to be delivering strong results with other content providers ­- Revision3 has said its viewers were 90% more likely to watch another video when one was recommended to them via Taboola’s tools.

 
 

Interactive video technology service Clikthrough linked up with AOL to power interactive videos starting this month across several AOL sites. The deal calls for Clikthrough to encode videos featuring content from The Jonas Group and AOL studios that’ll be carried on Shelterpop.com and Cambio.com.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Cox Media revamped its local ad sales group in the last year to focus on integrating Internet, VOD and new media ad options for its advertisers and the results are starting to pay off ­ Cox tells Cynopsis Digital that it’s logged double digit growth this year in local cable ad sales in part because of the political season, but also because of the overhaul.
 
Online ad software firm Panache is introducing a new video ad format called “lead accelerator” that can be tailored with lead-gen tools built into the ads themselves. Panache is targeting it to financial service companies first and will roll out to other verticals.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The online cable service ivi TV that’s being sued by broadcasters has rolled out service to Chicago, adding to existing markets of Seattle, New York and Los Angeles. Ivi TV lets viewers watch live broadcast TV online for only $4.99 a month, but ivi TV is currently embroiled in legal battles with broadcasters who claim it’s a pirating service.
 
Cookie Jar Entertainment inked a deal with Netflix to let U.S. and Canadian consumers watch some of its animated and live action titles instantly via Netflix’s online streaming option. The shows includes Busytown, Johnny Test, Metajets and Strawberry Shortcake.
 
ESPN acquired the IP from PVI Virtual Media Services in a deal that will bolster’s ESPN’s use of virtual technology across platforms, the sports network said. ESPN will hire most of PVI’s engineers and will own the rights to the company’s technology for virtual insertion, player tracking, iTV apps and 3D graphics.
 
Meredith Corporation has officially acquired Real Girls Media Network, an online network of sites for women that attracts about 4 million to 5 million monthly unique visitors and increases the reach of Meredith’s Women’s Network to nearly 25 million uniques per month, Meredith said.

The most popular shows online vary sharply from the most popular shows on TV, said online viewing service Sidereel. The company analyzed the most searched-for shows on its service online (which counts 12 million monthly uniques) and compared them to the most popular Nielsen-rated shows from Sept. 20 to Nov. 28, finding no overlap.

Apple said MLB.com At Bat is the highest grossing application for the iPhone and iPod Touch for 2010. It was also the highest grossing app on the iPad in the sports category. During the recent post season, the app was accessed 37 million times. The app lets viewers watch live any home or away game.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The Interactive Ad Bureau’s CEO Randall Rothenberg is departing next month to become chief digital officer for Time. IAB said it’s begun a search for a new CEO. In the interim, IAB’s EVP and COO Patrick Dolan will serve as the IAB leader.
