Disney gets a new princess, but this time it’s a little girl princess named Sofia who will debut in the new fairytale animated TV movie and series, Sofia the First, premiering in fall 2012 and spring 2013 respectively on Disney Channel and Disney Junior channels worldwide. Targeted to preschoolers the Sofia the First stories are set in a storybook world and will feature age-appropriate social messages and life lessons. Sofia the First was developed by Craig Gerber (Pixie Hollow Games), who also write the movie, Disney Television Animation is producing both the TV movie and series. The Sofia the First stories revolve around Sofia who is an average girl until her mom marries the king and things shift dramatically to life in the castle, which while glamorous can also be confusing and is filled with lots of rules as well as two step siblings. Sofia the First will include appearances by Fauna, Flora and Merryweather (fairies from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty) as the headmistresses of Royal Prep, the academy that Sofia, along with other princes and princesses, attends. Plans also include special appearances by classic characters including Cinderella and other Disney Princesses. The voice cast for includes Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as Sofia, as well as Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy) as Queen Miranda, Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) as Clover, a wise-talking Rabbit; and Tim Gunn (The Revolution, Project Runway) as Baileywick, the Royal Steward.
Nickelodeon Consumer Products signs back-to-school license and retail deals for SpongeBob SquarePants in Italy and India.
- Italian licensee Accademia will launch a wide range of fashion products for all ages (kids to young adults) for back-to-school season in 2012, through boutiques and specialist stores. Categories in the deal include backpacks, binders, book covers, book labels, correction tape, day planners and organizers. In addition products include diaries, erasers, folders, geometry sets, luggage, notebooks, note cards, paper clips, pencil cases and pouches, pencils, pens, rulers, sharpeners, wallets and writing paper.
- India’s largest hypermarket (superstore) chain Big Bazaar, part of Future Group, has just launched its back-to-school collection. India is in back-to-school mode now. Licensee B Vishal Corporation’s line-up of products includes coloring pencils, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, sketch pens, pencil pouches, oil pastels, compass boxes and money boxes. The new product launch is being supported via broadcast, in-store and digital efforts including promotion on Facebook, Twitter as well as on the NickIndia.com.
- Meanwhile, In Germany, SpongeBob SquarePants advent calendars from licensee Rubezahl are available at stores now.
Bulldog Licensing is named to represent the iconic UK fashion doll brand Sindy, under a new deal with licensor Pedigree. Sindy debuted in the UK in 1962 to become the best selling toy in Britain by the late 60s, and continues to be popular today. The Sindy dolls include a large adult fan base. Donning various costumes and fashions by Mary Quant, Sindy also had a boyfriend Paul, a doll that was apparently modeled on Paul McCartney. Beginning fall 2012 Sindy will celebrate her 50th anniversary, with plans including a Sindy exhibition in London and a number of other initiatives that will be announced later. Bulldog will be looking to partner with licensees in categories that tie in with Sindy’s existing connection with the world of fashion, such as perfume, accessories, apparel, jewelry and footwear.
Paramount partners with Oakley for a special edition 3D glasses that commemorate the release of The Adventures of Tintin, the new 3D feature film which is directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson and opens in the US and Canada on December 21, 2011. The Oakley 3D Gascan Tintin Limited Edition features art inspired by the movie on the earstems on the frames, described as “Polished Rootbeer” in color, which come in a custom Microclear bag and also features graphics based on the movie. Only 4,000 units of the Oakley 3D Gascan Tintin Limited Edition glasses will be available worldwide. Oakley boasts that its 3D Gascan is the first optically correct 3D eyewear, which has nothing to do with prescription correction, and employs its HDO-3D technology provides the best possible 3D experience and are certified by RealD, the most popular 3D technology. This marks the second time the two companies have partnered on 3D eyewear, Oakley and Paramount teamed earlier this year to create limited edition 3D glasses for the feature film Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Moshi Monsters launches the Moshi Bus Tour in the UK beginning this weekend at Bluewater shopping center, The Village car park on Saturday, December 17, where it will remain for a week. The tour will feature activities (coloring, clay modeling, quizzes, giveaways, trade Moshlings and trading cards etc.), with the first stop also featuring an appearance by Moshi creator Michael Acton Smith this Sunday. Following Christmas the Moshi Bus will make its way to Manchester’s Trafford Center, with further dates and venues for 2012 to be announced.

Target Entertainment completes new broadcast deals for Novel Entertainment‘s animated series Horrid Henry (156×11). The new broadcast deals include: Cartoon Network acquires the first two seasons of Horrid Henry (104×11) for its Asia Pacific region that includes Australia and New Zealand, China and India; public broadcaster RUV (Iceland) picks up season three (52×11); and YLE (Finland) takes season 2 (52×11). Targeted to K6-9, Horrid Henry series is based on Francesca Simon’s Horrid Henry books and made its initial debut on CiTV (UK).
Disney XD picks up a third season of its series Pair of Kings, which will introduce a new character, with another leaving, when production gets underway in February 2012. Joining the cast for the new season is Adam Hicks (Zeke and Luther, Lemonade Mouth) as a new character, a long lost brother. Exiting the series is one of the two main characters, until now, Brady, who was played by Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana, Phineas and Ferb, PrankStars). Musso will continue to lend his voice to Jeremy Johnson in Disney’s animated series Phineas and Ferb. Musso also says that he will be focusing on new acting and music projects that are in development.
Viacom International Media Networks inks TV sales (new and renewals) around the world for Nickelodeon’s series SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer:
- Deals for both series:
- TF1 (France) signing renewals for Dora the Explorer season 1 and the special Dora Dances to the Rescue, as well as a renewal for SpongeBob SquarePants episodes 8190; Pro Plus (Slovenia) acquires SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer seasons 1 and 2; HomeChoice’s (Korea) new Nickelodeon VOD deal includes episodes of both series; BESTV (China) enters into a deal that includes SpongeBob SquarePants seasons 4, 5 and 6 and Dora the Explorer seasons 3, 4 and 5; Telenica (Nicaragua) picks up SpongeBob SquarePants season 7 and Dora the Explorer season 5 as part of a branded block. P2 Games, an interactive games publisher, debuts the first Guess with Jess app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch in the UK. Based on the preschool series Guess with Jess, the new educational app includes ten activities and, like the series, Big Questions for curious preschoolers. The app offers three different difficulty settings and features Jess to help guild kids through the play and learn activities, including: Painting, Dot-To-Dot, Music, Spot The Difference, Jigsaw, Hide ‘N’ Seek and Guess It. Jess is Postman Pat’s question-filled black and white cat.

The US Forest Service furthers its early learning conservation messaging releases a free teaching supplement to the illustrated Woodsy’s ABCs book. The supplement uses lessons from the book and shows teachers how to take those lessons beyond the book with in-class and outdoor activities that incorporate age appropriate science, literacy, writing and critical thinking elements. Each section includes suggested reading on that topic. All3Media‘s Lime Pictures appoints Lesley Douglas as its CEO. A 25-year media industry veteran, Douglas will take up her new position in January 2012. She will work alongside Creative Director Tony Wood and is charged with growing Lime Pictures’ programming and develop new outlets and commercial deals for its brands in the UK and internationally. Douglas was the youngest Controller of BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, and she was also the BBC’s first Controller of Popular Music across all platforms. A producer of a wide range of programming in various genres targeted to people 16-35, Lime Pictures has also produced kids/tween series such as House of Anubis and Hollyoaks, among others.
