Genius Brands International, developer/marketer of the Baby Genius line of music/education products, steps into the TV world as it begins development on an animated series for K6-9 based on its Genius brand. The company has brought on the writer/producer team of Suzanne Bolch and John May (aka Bloch ‘n’ May, exec. producers on Captain Flamingo and Naturally Sadie, producers on The Journey of Allen Strange, Flash Forward, writers on The Magic School Bus, Life with Derek, Caitlin’s Way) to create and write the new series. The new series is slated to be available to broadcasters for fall 2014. The Genius Baby YouTube channel recently surpassed 10 million video views.

LICENSING
Italy-based Atlantyca Entertainment inks a licensing deal with QMI, an Italian entertainment marketing/communications company, to feature the animated series and characters Geronimo Stilton and Il Piccolo Principe (Le Petit Prince) on a new series of prepaid cards Mypostepay offered by the Poste Italiane.
DHX Media enters into further deals for the preschool series Rastamouse. Ty Beanies has created a Rastamouse beanie toy that is available now at retailers including Harrods, Cards Galore and Trocadero. PMS International has signed on to create a line of plush, gift and novelty products for theme parks, holiday parks, amusement arcades, service stations, funfairs and family entertainment centers. This fall 2012 also saw the Rastamouse brand reach into the food and beverage categories, under deals with First Milk for branded kid portions of Dairy Maniacs Cheddar Stix, which continue to be available at Asda stores in the UK, while also debuting on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets. CBeebies’ (UK) will air a special Rastamouse season finale, which features a character submitted as part of the Design a Rastamouse character competition run in Rastamouse Magazine. The winning character is Marigold, one of an all girl group Da Sugamice, from the mind of a four-year-old fan named Maisy.
Penguin expands its intellectual property portfolio with the acquisitions of Snowman Enterprises Limited (SEL), giving the publisher full control of key publishing, feature film, TV, digital and merchandise rights to Raymond Briggs’ classic kid’s character and brand, The Snowman. Originally published in 1978, The Snowman has since sold 8.5 million copies of the book in 15 languages globally, with 3+ million of those in Puffin editions in the UK. An animated version of the book was produced in 1982 by producer John Coates and has aired annually on Channel 4 (UK) since then. This month a sequel to that special, titled The Snowman and The Snowdog, will premiere on Channel 4, which will coincide with Puffin’s, a Penguin imprint, release of an audio eBook of The Snowman and The Snowdog read by English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, followed by new publishing in print and digital formats from 2013.
Cartoon Network Asia commissions a new season and movie of the Indian animated series Roll No. 21 from Malaysia-based Animasia Studio. Roll No. 21, which airs on Cartoon Network India, is a modern take on the well-known rivalry between Krishna and Kamsa. In this version of the story, Kamsa has been re-incarnated as the Principal of Mathura Orphanage & School – where he is hatching an evil plan to (with the help of his minions and demons) take over the world. Additionally, Animasia Studio is currently working on its new animated film, Bola Kampung – The Movie, which is set for theatrical release in Malaysia coming March 2013. The movie revolves around Amanda, a young princess from the virtual game Kingdom Hill who has been sent to Kampung Gong Lechar in search of the legendary Suria Warrior, who they hope will save her Kingdom. Things get more complicated when upon arriving in Kampung Gong the princess loses her memory, and she is then mistaken by Iwan, a local hero, as his cousin who is supposed to be visiting him on a school holiday.
The Hub will debut new episodes of the animated series Secret Millionaires Club, which features the voice and likeness of investor Warren Buffett, from Sunday, December 16 at 9a. The first of the new episodes will feature entertainment and business entrepreneur/artist Jay-Z. Other guest stars that will make appearances in new episodes include Bill Gates, Shaquille O’Neal, Nick Cannon, Gisele Bundchen and Kelly Rowland. Secret Millionaires Club is Andy Heyward and his A Squared Entertainment.
Entertainment One Family (eOne Family) completes a broadcast deal for Astley Baker Davies‘ preschool series Peppa Pig with Corus Entertainment’s preschool network Treehouse. Under the deal Treehouse picks up the rights two seasons 1-6 of Peppa Pig, which it plans to being airing in March 2013. eOne Family has also appointed licensing agent Studio Licensing in a strategic move to develop a consumer products program for Peppa in Canada. In turn, Studio Licensing has completed deals in a range of categories including toys, accessories, outwear and nightwear, footwear, games and puzzles, with product slated to debut at the end of 2013. eOne Family has also recently inked international distribution deals for Peppa Pig with Yo Yo (Taiwan), TVB (Hong Kong), Okto (Singapore), Cineplex (Thailand) and Disney Junior in Spain and Italy.
DreamWorks Animation SKG appoints branding veteran, Michael Francis to the newly created position of Chief Global Brand Officer. Francis will be responsible for DreamWorks Animation’s worldwide branding initiatives, including the branding of all of the IP associated with the studio, as well as for its licensing and consumer products efforts and franchise management activities. Francis takes up his new position on part-time immediately and then on a full time basis in February 2013. Francis was previously CEO and Founder of Farview Associates, a global brand agency, President of J.C. Penney, and toiled for 26+ years with the Target Corporation, ultimately serving as EVP and CMO.
