PBS is hot for its new series on volcanoes titled Life on Fire which will be added to Exploration Wednesdays in the New Year.  Narrated by Jeremy Irons, Life on Fire offers a detailed look at the struggles and adaptations required to survive around volcanoes.  The six-part series airs following NATURE and NOVA on Wednesdays from January 2 to February 6 at 10p (check local listings).

Spike premieres The Joe Schmo Show with two back-to-back episodes starting January 8 at 10p.  The one-hour, 10-episode series features a real guy who believes he is on a new reality show looking for America’s next bounty hunter, but in reality he is surrounded by actors.  The guy’s cast members are made up of reality show cliches including Lorenzo Lamas, playing himself.  Spike originally ran The Joe Schmo Show in September 2003 and the format was one of television’s first faux reality series.  The series is produced by Barry Poznick and John Stevens of Zoo Productions, an All3 media company.

Following the death of Latin superstar Jenni Rivera who died in a plane crash en route to Mexico City on Sunday, The Voice Mexico (La Voz Mexico) will resume this coming Sunday on Televisaafter postponing the semifinal episode last weekend.  Ms. Rivera had joined the second season of the reality singing competition as a music coach.  According to Televisa, the show will “resume with its regular transmission.”  Ms. Rivera also starred in her own reality show I Love Jenni on cable network mun2.  She had also recently signed with ABC to star in her own comedy series, Jenni.  mun2 and Telemundo Media released a joint statement from Diana Mogollon, GM, mun2 and Emilio Romano, President, Telemundo Media:

“It is with a heavy heart that both the mun2 and Telemundo Media family mourn the tragic passing of Mexican-American entertainment icon and mun2 star of “I Love Jenni,” Jenni Rivera. Jenni was one of the most influential, authentic and captivating Latinas in entertainment. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, who broke through the language barrier and connected with millions of fans in a unique, powerful and lasting way. She was a Grammy-nominated singer, a multiple platinum and gold record award winning artist who performed sold out concerts across numerous countries. She will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to Jenni’s entire family and manager Pete Salgado on her loss and the loss of their team members. The Weather Channel will roll out a new series Reel Rivals set in Florida, the Sport Fishing Capital of the World.  The six-episode half-hour series will premiere in May 2013 and will follow real-life charter boat captains in the Florida Keys who try to fulfill the dream of their tourist clients who want to catch the biggest and most trophy fish.  The series is produced by Optomen. 

The fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo debuts with a 90-minute premiere on January 28 at 9p and yesterday the show announced a slew of celebrity guest judges joining drag mogul RuPaul.  Those making guest judge appearances include: Maria Conchita Alonso, Joan Van Ark, Chaz Bono, Downtown Julie Brown, Coco, Camille Grammer, Marg Helgenberger, La Toya Jackson, Kristen Johnston, Leslie Jordan, Clinton Kelly, George Kotsiopolous, Juliette Lewis, Bob Mackie, Aubrey O’Day, The Pointer Sisters (Anita & Ruth), Paulina Porizkova, Mike Ruiz, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Travis Wall.  Additionally, guest appearances during the new season include Gloria Allred, Mathu Anderson, Candis Cayne, Nadya Ginsburg, Deven Green, Wilmer Valderrama and Bruce Vilanch.  Also on January 28, Logo will premiere a new season of Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race at 1030p.  RuPaul’s Drag Race is produced by World of Wonder Productions.

HISTORY‘s sixth season premiere of Ax Men on Sunday at 9p averaged 2.8 million total viewers; 1.5 million with A25-54; and 1.4 million with A18-49.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Univision Communications Inc. and Bounce TV announced yesterday a joint distribution agreement allowing Univision Television Group, which owns and/or operates 62 television stations in top US Hispanic markets, will carry Bounce TV as a multicast channel of their stations in seven markets.  The markets that have Bounce TV include San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Raleigh and Tampa.  The Univision launches will take Bounce TV coverage to 86% of African American TV homes and 68% of the total US.  Bounce TV will now be in all of the top ten markets and 24 of the top 25 African American markets. 

As of yesterday Entertainment Studios, Inc., independent producer and distributor of first-run syndicated television programming for broadcast television stations and owner of seven 24-hour hi-def television networks, has launched its eighth and newest 24-hour hi-def television network: JUSTICE CENTRAL.TV.  This new 24/7 cable TV network will focus on legal news, court proceedings, talk and entertainment programming including the original programming America’s Court with Judge Ross, We the People with Gloria Allred, Justice for All with Judge Cristina Perez and Supreme Justice with Judge Karen.  JUSTICE CENTRAL.TV is available on AT&T U-verse TV channel in both standard-def and hi-def.  Entertainment Studios’ other seven 24/7 linear hi-def television networks are: Cars.TV, Comedy.TV, ES.TV, MyDestination.TV, Pets.TV, Recipe.TV and Legacy.TV.

Raycom Media and ITV Studios America are teaming with Trifecta Entertainment & Media to distribute America Now, the daily newsmagazine show co-hosted by Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic.  Trifecta will commence selling the show in 2013 and will also handle all national advertising sales.  America Now is in its third season and airs weekdays in 45 markets.

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision won on Friday at 1.7/6 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’ Undercover Boss and Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva tied for #1 at 1.6/6 each while ABC’s comedies Last Man Standing and Malibu Country came in third with an average of 1.5/5.  Univision’s Amores Verdaderos did best at 9p with a 2.0/6 and NBC’s encore of SNL Christmas special came next at 1.7/5.  NBC then topped at 10p with Dateline Friday at 1.7/5 and Univision was a couple of paces behind with Amor Bravio at 1.5/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Amy Carney was promoted to President/Advertiser Sales, Strategy and Research at Sony Pictures Television (SPT) where she reports to Steve Mosko, President, SPT.  Amy will continue to oversee advertiser sales and will now head SPT’s worldwide research group which conducts and assembles all program, sales and channels research for the division.  Amy is based in Los Angeles and manages the sales teams located in New York, L.A. and Chicago.  The research teams are based in L.A., New York, Miami, London and Hong Kong.  Furthermore, SPT named James Petretti as SVP/US Research and Analytics to manage all research efforts for ad sales, broadcast, cable, syndication and digital programming and distribution in the US.  James reports to Amy Carney. 

Dan Ackerman will become SVP/Business Strategy and Ad Innovation with CBS Television Stations.  In his new role, Dan will work with the sales teams at the group’s 29 local stations to collaborate with major clients and agencies on the creation of customized advertising campaigns that involve the group’s range of platforms.  Dan will report to Jim Sullivan, President/Sales for the CBS Television Stations.  Most recently, Dan was VP/Director of Sales at KPIX-TV and KBCW-TV in San Francisco since April 2011.

Crown Media Family Networks, home of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie channel, added Amy Jo Wayne as SVP/Advertising Sales.  Amy Jo will share oversight of the eastern region and generate national advertising sales.  She is based in New York and will report to Ed Georger, EVP/Advertising Sales and GM of Hallmark Movie Channel.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. tapped Lincoln Lopez for the newly-created role as VP/Social Media Strategy and Innovation for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).  Lincoln will be in charge of all social media operations, initiatives and campaigns in support of the networks’ programming.  Prior to this appointment, Lincoln was VP/Digital Marketing and Social Media at VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia.   He is presently transferring from New York to Turner Broadcasting headquarters in Atlanta.  He reports to Tricia Melton, SVP/Brand and Entertainment Marketing for TBS, TNT and TCM. 

Sonar Entertainment tagged Debbie Back as SVP/ North American Sales responsible for selling new productions and library content to broadcast and cable networks in the US and Canada.  Debbie will report to David Ozer, EVP/Head of Global Sales.
