Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 11, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Scratch another couple of weeks from the NHL season. The league announced that all games through Dec. 30 are now off the table to mark 526 regular season games lost this year due to the lockout, or 43% of the season. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that the league and players’ association are looking to restart talks this week.
CBS Sports Network announced plans to debut its first-ever Super Bowl coverage, lining up over 50 hours of original programming from New Orleans surrounding the CBS Television Network’s broadcast of the game on Sunday, Feb. 3. As part of the slate, the channel will launch two new shows – Super Bowl Live and Inside the Super Bowl – while current series NFL Monday QB, Rome, Lead Off and the Tim Brando Show will also originate from the city. Most intriguingly, for the first time, CBS Sports Network will also offer extended post-game coverage that will begin once CBS Sports signs off its broadcast of Super Bowl XLVII. James Brown, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason, Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe will host.
The PGA Tour revealed the first six tournaments for the 2013-14 season, all of which will award full FedEx Cup points and be televised on Golf Channel. The season launches with the Frys.com Open on Oct. 10-13 in San Martin, CA, the week following The Presidents Cup 2013 before moving to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas on Oct. 17-20. The action then moves overseas beginning with The CIMB Classic from Oct. 24-27 in Selangor, Malaysia and the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, on Nov. 1-4. The Tour then returns stateside with The McGladrey Classic on Nov. 7-10 before ending with the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, which will be contested Nov. 14-17. Out of the picture will be Disney’s traditional Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.
MLB had a banner year for the proverbial wallet. The league drew revenues of $7.5 billion, according to the Biz of Baseball site, to break two straight years at the $7 billion mark. Additional revenues from newly signed deals from FOX, ESPN and TBS will push that figure north of $8.4 billion in 2014.
The NFL swapped up the slate for week 16 as part of its flex scheduling agreement. The week will see the 49ers/Seahawks game on Sunday, Dec. 23 shift to primetime on NBC’s SNF. The Chargers/Jets game that was originally slated for the network will now head to 1p on CBS, while the Giants/Ravens matchup jumps to 4:25p on FOX.
CBS Radio announced that the company it has finalized its purchase of radio station 101.9 WFAN-FM in New York, marking its seventh owned-and-operated station in the market. The station, of course, is the flagship broadcast home for teams such as the New York Giants, New York Mets, Brooklyn Nets and New Jersey Devils.
ESPN’s latest edition of its 30 for 30 film series, You Don’t Know Bo, drew a 2.3 metered market rating for Sunday night’s telecast to rank as ESPN’s highest rated documentary on an overnight basis, according to Nielsen. Birmingham, Ala. pulled the best local numbers with a 7.9.
HBO Sports is offering another look at Pacquiao’s knockout on Saturday when the channel runs a special edition of World Championship Boxing featuring Manny and Juan Manuel Marquez at 9:30p. Immediately following the replay, HBO cameras will take viewers live to Houston for a doubleheader headlined by the Nonito Donaire vs. Jorge Arce junior featherweight title showdown.
For the first time, the WNBA Draft will be featured in prime time with ESPN2 lining up the first round of the 2013 event to run at 8p on Monday, April 15. Top female basketball prospects will convene at ESPN’s Bristol headquarters for the third straight year. ESPNU will then air the second and third rounds beginning at 9 p.m.
