American Girl Brands introduces two new historical girl characters in one six-book series, the first time it has done so ever. Set in 1850s New Orleans, the two new characters, Cecile Rey and Marie-Grace Gardner, the book series follows the girls as their friendship stretches across boundaries of race and class as the girls (one African American and the other Caucasian) help their families, friends and the city during a difficult time. Each of the characters will also be released as 18-inch dolls with authentic period clothing and accessories, when the new line launches August 30, 2011. To celebrate the launch of the two characters and book series, American Girl ( www.americangirl.com ) is teaming with musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr., and his 13-year-old daughter Kate to create an original song, A Lot Like Me, which is inspired by Cecile and Marie-Grace stories. Performed by Kate, and written by her Dad, all of the proceeds from the song, which will be available via iTunes this month, will benefit the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Lionsgate gives the second movie in The Hunger Games franchise, Catching Fire, a release date of November 22, 2013. The first movie, The Hunger Games, which is based on the first title in The Hunger Games young adult book series by author Suzanne Collins, is currently in production with Gary Ross directing and set for release on March 23, 2012. Catching Fire is based on the eponymous second book in the series.
The 42nd season of Sesame Street will launch on PBS Kids on September 26, 2011 (check local listings). The new season will focus its efforts on a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum. Additionally, season 42 will feature original songs and street storylines, a brand new segment entitled Murray’s Science Experiments, new Super Grover 2.0 stories and Abby’s Flying Fairy School animations. What Sesame Street season would be complete without a range of celebrity appearances, which this time around will include visits from Mark Ruffalo, , Robin Williams, Amy Adams, Drew Brees, Nicole Kidman, Live Schreiber and Naomi Watts, Mila Kunis, Sofia Vergara, and Emma Stone, Conan O’Brien, Seth Rogan, Andy Samberg, Craig Ferguson, Bruno Mars and Carmel Anthony, Sutton Foster and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, among many others. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), Sesame Street will premiere a special episode, The Latinization of Marco, during which Gina teaches her adopted Guatemalan-born son about his roots. Sesame Street is produced by Sesame Workshop, and is funded in part by a grant through the Public Broadcasting Service and Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers. Sesame Street is underwritten in part by Beaches Resorts, PNC, UnitedHealthcare, Earth’s Best Organic, and The Good Egg Project.
Discovery Familia, a network targeted to Hispanic moms and their preschoolers, will premiere the kid-targeted of Artzooka! (26×30) in the US on Monday, August 22 at 2p, as part of its Discovery Kids programming block. A co-production with CCI Entertainment, Artzooka! will air on Discovery Familia on Mondays-Fridays at 2p. Designed to encourage kids to find art everywhere and see that it can be made from anything, the series on Discovery Familia is hosted/narrated by actor Bruno Lazzaro. Additionally, the network will also introduce new Mom-targeted short-form (60-second) parental advice segments called Ser Mama Hoy (Being a Mother Today), which feature early childhood expert and Discovery Familia ambassador Jeannette Torres-Alvarez and will air during primetime. The segments focus on encouraging your kids to get involved in physical activities and have fun, as well as underlining the importance and love for the Spanish language, and developing their self-confidence. Discovery Familia is currently expected to reach 4+ million Hispanic TV homes by the end of 2011.
The preschool channel JimJam joins Romtelecom‘s Dolce and iDolce platforms across Romania. JimJam, which features programming including Pingu, Thomas & Friends and Bob the Builder, will be available as a 24-hour channel and dubbed into Romanian. The preschool channel is already available on Romtelecom’s Nextgen cable platform. This news follows on the heels of the launch of JimJam’s first +1 channel in Italy earlier this summer, making the channel available in 60+ countries, in 13 languages to 14+ million subscribers. JimJam is art of Chello Zone’s portfolio of channels. Romtelecom is a provider of TV services, cable TV, DTH and IPTV.
ABC 4 Kids (Australia) will host the world premiere of the second season of the WotWots this August. The episodes form the new season of the WotWots are airing on the channel twice daily (9a and 4:15p). the WotWots can be seen in 90 territories including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Korea, Middle East and Poland. American Greetings Properties recently signed on for the worldwide licensing and merchandising rights to the preschool property. The WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures, co-founded by Richard Taylor and author/illustrator/producer Martin Baynton, and made at Taylor’s Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, King Kong). Taylor and Baynton previously teamed on the kid’s series Jane and the Dragon.
Jakks Pacific enters into a deal to acquire Hong Kong-based Moose Mountain Toymakers Limited ( www.moosemountaintoys.com), a manufacturer of sports arcade products, ride-ons, tents and soft play environments, pinball games and wagons, as well as kid’s product lines for licensed characters and brands. Under the deal, Jakks Pacific will acquire all the shares of stock of Moose Mountain, and its NJ-based affiliate, Moose Mountain Marketing. The deal is scheduled to close in Q3 2011, subject to third party approvals and customary closing conditions.
BBC Worldwide unveils publishing and DVD partnerships for the recently launched new CBeebies mixed live-action/2D animated program Baby Jake. BBC Worldwide and Darrall Macqueen, the latter developed the series, ink a new publishing deal with Egmont will develop a line of books based on the preschool series that are slated to rollout in July 2012, and a new DVD deal with kid-centric 2|entertain’s BBC DVD label, with plans to release the first DVD in the first half of 2012. BBC Worldwide was appointed as licensing agent for the Baby Jake brand earlier this summer, and has already completed deals with partners including Vivid as the UK master toy partner.
Zinkia Entertainment signs EMI Music Publishing to administer worldwide music rights (excluding Spain and the UK) for Zinkia’s preschool-aimed multiplatform Pocoyo brand. Under the new deal, EMI Music Publishing will administer all music rights relating to Pocoyo including theme music, incidental music and the main and end title music for all physical and digital releases, including the TV series and planned feature film. Two seasons of the animated Pocoyo series have been produced to date; with production almost complete on season 3, for a total of 156 x 7 episodes.
Bluewater Productions is set to publish a special bio comic book featuring actress/singer Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place). Written by Marc Shapiro and drawn by Alex Lopez, Selena Gomez: Young At Heart will be released this September 2011 in two versions; the regular comic format ($3.99) with cover art by Adam Ellis, and a graphic novel version (40 pages, $7.99) with cover by noted artist Joe Phillips. Next month the publisher will also release the sequel to its Justin Bieber comic book, Fame: Justin Bieber 2.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) and EMTEC enter into a licensing deal to produce Looney Tunes USB keys for consumers. Kids and adults will be able to choose between four Looney Tunes character USB Flash drives, Speedy Gonzales, Sylvester, Tweety and Tasmanian Devil to help them save their data. Each Looney Tunes USB comes with a poster. Additionally, to support the new line EMTEC and WBCP have developed a mini website featuring a 30-second short, Emtec Looney Tunes Characters Around the World, and play a game to win one of the new USB keys, as well as vote on which Looney Tunes character should be added to the collection.
