Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 7, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Nickelodeon picks up a fourth season of its music comedy series Big Time Rush. Created and executive produced by Scott Fellows (creator/writer/producer Ned’s Declassified Survival Guide) and produced in partnership with Sony Music, the fourth season (13×30) is set to begin producer in early 2013 in LA. Meanwhile, Big Time Rush continues to makes its way around the US this summer with its Big Time Tour. Big Time Rush’s original songs are written and produced under the guidance of Sony Music, and are written by successful songwriters and producers, including One Republic’s Ryan Tedder (Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson), Evan Bogart (Rihanna, Beyonce, Hot Chelle Rae), Toby Gad (One Direction, Alicia Keys, Fergie), Claude Kelly (Bruno Mars, Christina Aguilera, Pitbull), “Tricky” Stewart (Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey) and Fraser T. Smith (Taio Cruz, Adele).
Shout! Factory and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) team in a multi-year partnership to bring the popular TV series The Aquabats Super Show! and Monsuno to the home entertainment market in the US and Canada. The multi-year pact provides Shout! Factory with exclusive home entertainment distribution rights to these two TV series from FME. The Aquabats Super Show!, a music-centric mixed live action and animated series, is produced by FME and The Magic Store. A boy-targeted action adventure series, Monsuno is co-produced by Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific & Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FME and The Topps Company, and is supported by a Jakks Pacific toy line.
CPLG, the licensing representative for CBS Consumer Products, completes four new licensing deals for the sci-fi brand Star Trek. Signing on as new Star Trek partners: are Danilo (greeting cards, calendars); iGlobe (mobile phone and video game accessories); Pyramid (wall art); and Zeon (watches, clocks, flashlights and tinned mints). Star Trek continues to be a strong brand worldwide, with the upcoming Destination Star Trek London event, the first of its kind in Europe, set to take place October 2012 at London’s Excel. The newest Star Trek movie, the 12th movie, is set for release in May 2013.

The countdown to is on less than two weeks until The Hunger Games is released on DVD and Blu-ray, August 18, 2012. To celebrate the release, Lionsgate and Target Corporation are partnering to offer The Hunger Games special collection of ‘keepsakes’ and an exclusive three-disc version of the movie, which features previously unseen video from the set. These premium items range from $349 to $999, marking Target’s first-ever licensed product offering at this price point, and will be introduced one per day beginning on August 18 to coincide with the DVD release. OK – fans get ready – here is what will be available in very limited quantities exclusively via Target.com: 14-carat gold replicas of heroine Katniss Everdeen’s Mockingjay pin – there are only 100 available at $999/each; leather replicas of Katniss’ hunting jacket, with 100 available at $349/each; and The Hunger Games lithographs autographed by 10 key cast members including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, there will be 100 available for $699/each. On the more affordable side of things… Target will offer a deluxe edition of The Hunger Games for DVD ($20.99) and Blu-ray ($25.99) (pre-order, http://www.target.com/c/the-hunger-games-ways-to-shop-entertainment/-/N-56dlq#?lnk=sr_rd_hungergames), featuring a collectible case and 45 minutes of exclusive content, including personal video diaries filmed by seven of the movie’s key Tributes and interviews with the cast. The retailer will also be selling a wide array of The Hunger Games movie merchandise from backpacks and lunch boxes to jewelry, pillow cases and life-size cardboard cut-outs of movie characters Katniss, Peeta and Gale – prices ranging from $6.99-$37.99.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) partnered with Max Licensing, its international licensing agent in Turkey for its Strawberry Shortcake brand, known as Strawberry Shortcake Çilek Kiz, completed their Strawberry Shortcake “Çilek Kiz Talent Contest”, which invited fans to submit videos online of themselves singing the Strawberry Shortcake songs “We are all Stars” and “Anything is Possible” in both Turkish and English, for a chance to win a role in a Strawberry Shortcake back-to-school TV commercial. The Strawberry Shortcake “Çilek Kiz Talent Contest” received promotional support from local media outlets including Digiturk and Haberturk. Ten finalists were chosen among 300 video submissions to perform at the grand finale event held at the Kozzy Shopping Center in Istanbul judged by local celebrities.
Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com), the kid-centric VOD website, is partnering with Sony to launch its new app for two Sony tablets, Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P, via the Google Play app store. The new Toon Goggles app will offer two cartoons exclusive for the Sony devices available in the US and Canada until early October 2012. The Toon Goggles app is already available for other devices. Launched last year, Toon Goggles features 1500+ hours of free kid and parent friendly programming, and recently added the action/adventure Cyboars miniseries from Cyboars International, as well as series from France’s Millimages such as Pablo the Little Red Fox.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Australia’s Flying Bark Productions appoints Rebecca Hardman ad Head of Legal and Business Affairs. Hardman joins the company from Screen Australia where she served as Sr. Lawyer, Legal and Business Affairs. In her new positions, Hardman is responsible for legal and business affairs, planning and strategy, strategic relationships, building brand management, new digital platforms as well as licensing and merchandising. She will report to Flying Bark Productions’ Managing Director, Jim Ballantine. Hardman previously toiled for Pacific Access (now Sensis), One.Tel Limited and Gilbert Tobin Lawyers.
Zodiak Rights, the international division of Zodiak Media, promotes Glen Hansen to SVP/Sales, Acquisitions and Co-production North America. Hansen joined Zodiak Rights earlier this year as SVP/Acquisitions and Business Development, North America, and was responsible for heading third party acquisitions in the US. In his expanded position, Hansen will be responsible for all US and English-speaking Canada finished program and format sales from the Zodiak Rights’ catalog. He will continue to work out of the Zodiac US offices in LA and report into Zodiak Rights’ Managing Director Jane Millichip in London. Hansen previously served at Fox Look as Head of Sales for finished programming and formats for Fox US, and prior to that as SVP/Sales and Acquisitions, Target Entertainment. He has also held senior positions in sales and acquisitions at Granada International and ITEL.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) appoints Dan Gopal as SVP/Director of Global Digital Media and Home Entertainment. He will be responsible for ITVS GE’s global home entertainment business and will work with the DVD and TV sales team to maximize digital sales. Gopal will report to Jean-Philippe Randisi, EVP/Consumer Products. Most recently, Gopal was with Miramax, where was Head of Sales and Operations for EMEA. Hansen previously toiled in various roles at The Walt Disney Company in EMEA, including as Head of Video, Digital Media Distribution, EMEA, Disney Media Distribution. Prior to that he held Executive Director roles for Disney-ABC-ESPN Television, overseeing program distribution for the Nordic region and business strategy and development for EMEA.
