Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Hulu Plus has launched its second original series in two weeks. Last week, Hulu debuted the animated The Awesomes. Quick Draw is kind of a funny CSI of the Old West. A Harvard grad travels out to the frontier to be a sheriff and he and his deputy use this newfangled thing called forensics to solve crimes in the half-hour comedy. New episodes come out each Monday.

The federal government’s constant wrangling of the nation’s budget has led to a new four-episode web series beginning August 8, called Appalachian Strong, which chronicles the activities of four Americorps VISTA workers in West Virginia who are working with the Office of Surface Mining. VISTA has been asked to cut a slew of workers and the hope is that the web series will help the powers that be see that these types of jobs are worth saving.

California’s 1 Mainstream, which has created a platform that cuts down on the time and financial resources needed to launch streaming video applications across third party devices, has just had Britain’s BSkyB acquire a $2 million convertible debt security in it. BSkyB also made an agreement to use 1 Mainstream’s technology.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

As we all know, Time Warner Cable and CBS are in a contract dispute and subscribers to the cable company haven’t been able to watch the network’s programming in recent days. TWC is now telling folks that are blocked from watching CBS to go check out Aereo, the streaming service that will give them access to live-streaming content for $8 a month. CBS surely isn’t happy about this, especially since one of the sticking points in the negotiations, according to the Los Angeles Times, is that TWC wants CBS not to sell any of its content to Netflix.
In Other Words: Some consumers will go get their CBS fix on Aereo while the deal is worked out and never pay Aereo a dime, since there is a 30-day money-back trial period. Some other consumers will likely go to Aereo and just ditch out of TWC altogether.

Chicago startup WebCurfew is targeting parents who don’t want their kids to be watching video on their mobile devices in their rooms. WebCurfew allows parents to cut off connected devices from the home’s router when they don’t want the device to be able to receive a WiFi signal. In the near future, the service will email parents when a new, unauthorized device joins the network.

With scads of viewers using mobile devices as second-screen experiences while at home, it was only a matter of time before it moved into the movie house. In-cinema advertising network Screenvision and mobile-ad service Shazam have teamed up to bring second-screen experiences to movie ads. The pair has created three experiences with its third, for Bacardi, in theaters now. When any of Shazam’s 100 million U.S. users enter a theater and open up his or her Shazam app (after being prompted by onscreen ads), it will automatically be exposed to the advertising brand’s experience. “A compelling, clear call-to-action is really the driver to attract the greatest number of moviegoers interested in the ad to then engage with it,” John McCauley, Screenvision’s SVP of Strategic Alliances told Cynopsis Digital. “The user experience for each ad is really not just one thing, but a blend of ways to engage with the brand, as there are plenty of people engaging with sweepstakes/giveaways, extended content and shopping from their seats.” So far the partnership has worked on experiences for a major cell-phone manufacturer, a national retailer, and now Bacardi. “We are seeing engagement rates for content as high as five times what you might see for an Internet click-through,” McCauley told Cynopsis. “However, regardless of the range of engagement, the moviegoers who do click through are hand raisers who will walk out of the theater with a brand’s message in their pocket or handbag, as the ad is essentially bookmarked and saved for later in the Shazam App on their phone.”

MARKETING + METRICS

Roku recently surveyed some of its users about YouTube use last week, sending out a survey that asked how much they use YouTube as well as what they watch when they do go there. Roku doesn’t have a YouTube app at this point and Gigaom.com theorized that the survey was possibly in preparation for offering one. A spokeswoman told the site that Roku is in conversations with YouTube, but no business terms have been reached. Gigaom points out that this is the standard answer Roku has pulled out when asked in the past about a YouTube channel being added. The spokeswoman went on to say that many YouTube channels, such as CollegeHumor and Vevo, already have their own Roku channels.
In Other Words: If Roku keeps giving its subscribers what they want by getting YouTube channel developers to also launch channels on Roku, the service won’t need to get a YouTube app of its own.

YouTube is adding a new feature for users who open a lot of browser windows, watch a slew of online video, but can’t always find exactly which browser the sound is coming from. From now on, there will now be a play icon in the tab of the browser so that viewers can see which tab is responsible for the audio and go right there to stop it.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

The NFL has released a new app for iOS, Android Windows, and BlackBerry that combines two previous apps. One of those carried scores, highlight clips, and other content while the other allowed users to stream some live games (for a $5 monthly fee – and only if you use Verizon): NBC’s Sunday night game, ESPN’s Monday night game, and Thursday night’s NFL Network games. As AllThingsD.com notes, this is happening at the same time that the man who oversaw digital for NFL Media, former COO Brian Rolapp, is getting moved up to CEO, where he will likely be making more digital changes as time progresses.
In Other Words: You can’t watch all the games, but it’s clear the NFL is ready to put more effort into its digital offerings.
