Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 31, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Alloy Media + Marketing has teamed with Kmart on its new webseries, First Day ( www.firstdaytheseries.com), which premieres today on the multiplatform digital network AlloyTV ( www.alloytv.com ).  Created by Alloy Entertainment (Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl), a division of Alloy Media + Marketing, First Day will air bi-weekly. Targeted to tweens and teens, the webseries follows a teen girl as she relives the first day of school over and over and over.  Alloy and Kmart put together scripts that showcase Kmart’s exclusive fashion brands throughout the eight episode series. Kmart and its retail brands will get extended promotion during the run of the series, with additional media featured throughout the Alloy Digital Network and Alloy’s Channel One Network.  Kmart will offer viewers a shopping component in each episode of First Day, during which its fashions will be featured and through a link they can then click and jump to the items on Kmart.com.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney XD launches its new live-action comedy series Pair of Kings, on Wednesday, September 22 at 8p.  Staring Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana, Phineas and Ferb) and Doc Shaw (The Suite Life on Deck), Pair of Kings revolves around fraternal twins that move from Chicago to the island of Kinkow after learning they are the heirs to the throne there.  To support the debut of the new series, Disney Channel will air a Pair of Kings hour-long special, featuring interstitials with Musso and Shaw, on Friday, September 10 at 9p, which will simulcast on Disney Mobile for Flo TV, MobiTV and Sprint TV.  DisneyXD.com (www.disneyxd.com ) will unveil a Pair of Kings show page offering games, videos, and a puzzle on September 10, and another game titled Wild Island Rampage on September 14.  Additional multiplatform rollout plans include:

  • September 13 – part one of the hour-long premiere will be available for free on iTunes
  • September 18 – the series’ mobile site debuts with the Pair of Kings Image Identifier game
  • September 22 – DXD will play the hour special on from 7-8p, immediately followed by a new episode.
  • September 23 – the special and premiere episodes will be available on iTunes, Xbox Live and Disney XD mobile VOD
  • September 27 – the series will be available on Disney XD on Demand on AT&T, Verizon, Charter and Cox.

In Canada, Family Channel will host a Night of Premieres on Friday, September 17, which includes the one-hour episode of Disney XD’s new series Pair of Kings at 5:30p and the network’s new original series, Connor Undercover at 9:35p.  The evening will also feature new episodes of Jonas L.A., Good Luck Charlie and Wingin’ It, and the premiere of the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam Dance Jam edition at 8p.

The BBC will premiere the new upcoming season of Doctor Who in two parts next year.  The first group of episodes will bow in spring 2011, followed in fall 2010 by the second set.  The reason for the split season is to accommodate writer Steven Moffat‘s request to write a new story arc with significant plot twists.  Moffat says the good news is that a season in two parts means two premieres, a big cliffhanger and two finales in the same year.

In other BBC news, BBC One picks up a second season of Junior Apprentice (8×60) from producers talkbackTHAMES.  Featuring teens 16-17, the new season of Junior Apprentice featuring Lord Sugar and his advisors Nick Hewer and Karren Brady, will broadcast next year.

Nickelodeon slides the premiere of Fred: The Movie, based on the popular internet character Fred Figglehorn created by teen Lucas Cruikshank, to Saturday, September 18 at 8p.  Produced by Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett, Varsity Pictures, and The Collective’s Gary Binkow and Evan Weiss, the network had been set to debut the TV movie on September 17.

Correction : Cartoon Network will premiere the new original animated series Sym-Bionic Titan, from creator/director Genndy Tartakovsky, on Friday, September 17 at 8p.  The premiere date included in yesterday’s edition was incorrect.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and Claire’s Stores launch the new exclusive Glee Jewelry Collection and accessory line this Friday, September 3, 2010 with three branded pop-up stores in the Chicago, LA and New York areas.  The stores will be open through September 26.  Beginning September 9, the Glee line will rollout in 1,500+ stores in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.  Claire’s ( www.claires.com ) will also be offering in-store and online promotions.  Additionally, Claire’s is also debuting a rebranded promotional version of its logo in which the letter ‘L’ is represented by ‘L’ made with an index finger and thumb, as it is in the Glee logo.  Claire’s Glee pop-shop as the Glendale Galleria (near LA) will also host a special premiere party for in conjunction with the debut of season two of Glee on September 21.

Paul Frank Industries will introduce a new youth technical snow collection with 686, a technical apparel expert, this fall 2010.  The snow gear features the classic Paul Frank characters, such as Julius and Skurvy, and includes boys and girls insulated quilted jackets, print jackets, pants, performance fleece hoodies and thermals, graphic tees, beanies, mittens and gloves.  686 is a subsidiary of Westlife Distribution, which in turn is owned and operated by Rider.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Michael Riley is named President, ABC Family, and will report to Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks & President, Disney/ABC Television Group.  Most recently Riley as SVP and GM/Radio Disney, overseeing the radio network and its 36 owned radio stations.  Previously he toiled for several Turner units including Turner Broadcasting System, EMEA, Turner Broadcasting System France, Turner Classic Movies, EMEA.  He also served as a strategy consultant with WPP Group.  A new GM for Radio Disney will be announced soon.

Hasbro Studios, Hasbro’s production arm, appoints Mike Eisner as SVP/Legal and Business Affairs.  An entertainment industry veteran, Eisner recently served as VP and literary agent at WME Entertainment/William Morris Agency for nine years, where he helped negotiate Hasbro Studios’ multi-picture deal with Universal.  He was previously VP/Business Affairs and literary agent at International Creative Management (ICM), and before that as counsel for Carolco Pictures.

Toy company HABA USA appoints Vishal Thakkar as its new e-commerce manager for its US online site Maukilo.com ( www.maukilo.com ).  Thakkar will oversee e0commerce operations at Maukilo for HABA USA’s family of companies.  HABA USA is a unit of HABA, a German toy manufacturer and board game publisher. Thakkar has worked as a consultant for the last decade designing/creating websites.
