A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
MARCH OF THE PENGUINS
KEEPS GOING AND GOING AND GOING Top 10 for 6 of the Past 10 Weeks MARCH OF THE PENGUINS *Domestic Estimate from 6/24-8/28/05. CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 30, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Rumors abound, and negotiations are reportedly still quite preliminary, but it sounds like Harvey and Bob Weinstein are kicking the tires of cable network Fuse. Fuse is part of Rainbow Media’s group of cable networks which also includes IFC, AMC, and WE: Women’s Entertainment. Fuse is currently in 38.3 million homes. One report from Variety indicates that thru the acquisition, the Weinstein brothers would be interested in transforming Fuse into a broader appealing network, one that would include more series and movies. * MORE GOOD STUFF *
Verizon has signed content agreements with The America Channel, Blackbelt TV, Expo TV, LIME and the Pentagon Channel, each of which will produce a range of entertainment and informational programming for Verizon FiOS TV. Under the agreements, Verizon will carry the channels on Verizon FiOS TV when it launches later this year. They will complement other major cable and network channels available to Verizon subscribers including the previously announced programming content agreements with A&E, Discovery, NBC Universal, Showtime, Starz Entertainment and TBS. Verizon FiOS TV will deliver hundreds of digital video and music channels, high-def programming, VOD content, an interactive programming guide and other features via the company’s “fiber-to-the-premises” broadband network. FiOS TV will have an initial launch in 15 states. Local Television Network (“LTN”) launches in Southern California on October 3rd with an entire line-up of original programming, all targeting the A18-34 audience. Content will encompass lifestyle, sports, shopping, travel and entertainment, airing nightly from 8p-12m. LTN will be carried on KVMD on Adelphia, Dish Network and DirecTV in LA, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties, reaching approx 3.7 million homes at launch. Coming up on Sundance Channel on October 5th at 10p is a new animated satirical series called I am NOT an ANIMAL. Created by writer/director Peter Baynham and produced by Richard Bennett and Baby Cow Prods for BBC Two, the 6-part series is about the adventures of a group of talking lab animals who must suddenly fend for themselves in the outside world, doing Pilates, using shoe trees, and subscribing to cell phone horoscope services. Discovery Times Channel will premiere its new series Off to War on Sunday, October 15 at 10p. The documentary/story follows a single unit of soldiers in the Arkansas National Guard, from the moment of their deployment to the war in Iraq. Filmmakers Brent and Craig Renaud followed the nearly 3,000 part time soldiers leaving their jobs and families to head oversees, as well as those they left back home. So what do you think of this idea? The version of the Big Brother series airing in Amsterdam includes among its houseguests a very pregnant woman. If she hasn’t been voted out of the house yet, she could well give birth on television. Producers haven’t really mapped out what they would or would not show during the birth, but Dutch authorities are looking into the question of whether the show will be violating any child labor laws (no, not that kind of labor… labor as in work!). After their investigation, authorities decided to grant a work permit for the newborn, which would allow the baby to appear on television. The restrictions on that work permit may also provide the young mother means to leave the house – Dutch child labor laws only allows children under 7 to appear a total of four times on television, and all taping has to happen during daytime hours. So much for the midnight feedings. CNBC‘s High Net Worth hosted by Tyler Mathisen is set to kick off on September 18 at 8p. The show is designed to educate viewers on how to extend their wealth and get the most out of their assets. The network’s Sunday night scheduling beginning that night will be High Net Worth at 8p, The Chris Matthews Show at 830p, The Restaurant at 9p and The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch at 10p. Cynopsis Survey: In an ongoing search for providing the information you find most useful and helpful, I’ve put together a quick survey relating primarily to programming data for cable networks. This time I’m looking to find out which networks you’d like to see covered with the information in the various survey questions . Certainly we will always endeavor to cover the major stories on any and all networks – this survey won’t change that. The whole thing shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes – so if you please: Survey click here
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
TNT is reportedly working on developing a back-door pilot based on the John Grisham novel, The Street Lawyer. According to Hollywood Reporter, TNT is looking at a four hour pilot, and if successful, it could be developed into a full series. This idea has been thru the mill before – a project at ABC back in 2003. HBO has added Brian Cox to the cast of Deadwood in the role of Jack Langrishe. Langrishe is a theatre producer and owner who is trying his level best to bring a little bit of culture to this South Dakota town. Cox has been signed to appear in a minimum of 7 episode when the show returns for its third season. On Fox’s Arrested Development, Charlize Theron has signed to guest on five episodes next season, as a love interest to Jason Bateman’s character. She will make her first appearance on the second episode of the new season. Arrested Development is scheduled to premiere on September 19th. USA Network has signed James Roday in the lead role opposite Dule Hill in the drama pilot project Psyche, thereby lifting the cast contingency. The story is about a guy (Roday) who passes himself off to police as a psychic and helps solve crimes. Hill plays Roday’s best friend. Project is from writer Steve Banks and Tagline Pictures. Noggin’s nighttime counterpart The N, targeting teens (median age of the channel is 15), has signed Ralph Macchio to a development deal, per Daily Variety. Already in development with Macchio is a drama about two runaway girls. Noggin/The N is currently available in approx 44 million households. Correction : Ralph Edwards will not be a part of the return of his series This is Your Life on ABC, produced by Fox TV Studios. With that said, his son Gary Edwards and Barbara Dunn-Leonard, EVP and President of Ralph Edwards Prods, respectively, will both act as Exec Producers along with Mindy Moore, Fred Siegel, and Jon Vein. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *

ABC Radio Networks announced the appointment of Blanche Joesten as an Account Executive in its New York City offices. He will continue to work in Arbitron’s research and technology center in Columbia, Maryland, and oversee a team of 30+ professional statisticians, demographers and experts in survey methodology. Warner Music Group Corp. has upped Elliott Peters to VP/Sr. Counsel & Head of Digital Legal Affairs. Formerly the company’s VP/Associate Counsel at the company, Elliott will continue to report to Dave Johnson, EVP/General Counsel, WMG. His responsibilities will include the primary legal role in the negotiation of new media deals, and the formation of new business models and oversight of the rights clearance process. * RATINGS *
