Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Dentsu Entertainment USA is set to bring The Little Battlers eXperience (LBX), the popular Japanese TV series and property, to North, Central and South America and is looking for partners.  Based on the miniature customizable robot animation, toy, video game and manga franchise, which is known in Japan as Danball Senki, the Danball Senki/LBX animated series is a co-production of video game company and property creator Level-5 (professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven), TV Tokyo and Dentsu Inc., with participation from Bandai, and publishers Shogakukan and Media Factory, as well as animation studio OLM (Pokemon, Deltora Quest).  The series currently airs in primetime on TV Tokyo.  Dentsu Entertainment USA is managing the business with Level 5 in the Americas.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) signs new sales and re-license deals for some of Nickelodeon’s preschool series and specials.

  • TF1 (France) acquires Dora the Explorer episodes 601-612 from season six of the series, and has renewed Dora World Adventure season 1.
  • In Asia: Wasu (China) signs on for an IPTV Nickelodeon programming package, which includes Dora the Explorer and other series; PBS (Thailand) takes a programming package that includes Ni Hao Kai Lan, Team Umizoomi, as well as Go! Diego, Go! and Dora the Explorer; PCCW (Hong Kong) picks up season one of Team Umizoomi; EBS (Korea) acquires the animated musical series Bubble Guppies
  • Provideo (Colombia) takes seasons 1-5 of Dora the Explorer on behalf of licensed channel Senal Colombia; Ecuavisa (Ecuador) picks up season 6 of Dora the Explorer and renews its deal for episodes from seasons 4 and 5 of the series, as well as renewals for episodes of Go! Diego, Go! from seasons 3 and 4
  • Pro Plus (Slovenia) has also signed on for Dora the Explorer.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kidz Bop teams with Adams Media to launch the first Kidz Bop books this week, beginning with three book titles.  Each of the music-focused books comes with a special code that is redeemable online for a free Kidz Bop MP3 music download at www.kidzbop.com/kidzbopbooks .  The new book line debuts as Kidz Bop celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer, and comes on the heals of the release of its newest album Kidz Bop 20.  Available this week, the first three book titles are Kidz Bop: Be a Pop Star!, Kidz Bop Plus One, and Kidz Bop: A Rockin’ Fill-In Story.  Adams Media is a division of F+W Media.

Disney and PlayNetwork, a producer of multimedia experiences, partner to promote Disney Junior programming to mom’s and kids all this month.  PlayNetwork will promote Disney Junior programming nationwide via the Alpha Mom’s Network, which is comprised of kid-centric fitness centers nationwide including MyGym and The Little Gym.  Last month Disney and PlayNetwork teamed for a promotion for Disney’s new Winnie the Pooh feature film.

Nickelodeon Consumer Productions completes further international consumer products and promotional deals for Dora the Explorer.

  • In Canada: the Zellers family story group is running a promotion tied to the special Dora’s Ballet Adventures in August when the DVD releases.  The promotion features Dora the Explorer branded ballet footwear, fashion and accessories that will all be supported with via an on air, online, and in-store campaign.  Treehouse Television will also support the effort by airing the Dora the Explorer Marathon on August 6; for holiday 2011, Walmart will launch a Dora Loves Puppy campaign featuring Dora and Perrito on winter play apparel, and Fisher Price‘s Dora Pets line will also debut in store with the support of a TV and online advertising effort.
  • In the UK: this fall 2011, Fisher Price teams with Tesco to launch an exclusive Ballet Girl doll, which supports a new on-air episode called Dora’s Dance Recital, a themed TV commercial, online and print campaigns and in store events; Nick Jr. recently launched Help Dora Help, a charity initiative that provides schools with a free activity pack and the opportunity to apply for an educational grant – this initiative continues through 2012.
  • In Germany, Toys ‘R’ Us will launch a Dora the Explorer promotion this fall that will includes Dora the Explorer displays featuring publishing titles and toys supported by on-air, online and press campaigns. Toys ‘R’ Us is also partnering with Nickelodeon Consumer Products for a Help Dora Help initiative.

McDonald’s is featuring a new The Smurfs movie Happy Meal promotion now in North America, and will continue to rollout at McDonald’s restaurants in 100+ countries through November 2011.  Based on Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation‘s The Smurf’s 3D movie, the Happy Meal promotion and support campaign around the world features a mixed live-action/computer animated TV commercial, in-restaurant Smurf signage and packaging, social media updates via Facebook and Twitter, and McDonald’s interactive kid-targeted online site Stage M ( www.fun.mcdonalds.com/stagem/index.html ), which offers a range of earth-friendly activities and content, including a music video featuring the Smurf characters.  For the North American promotion, McDonald’s has partnered with Keep America Beautiful (KAB) to invite kids to Smurf the Earth by selecting its Apple Dippers option in their Happy Meal orders.  The apple package offers a code that when entered at HappyMeal.com ( www.happymeal.com ) will see McDonald’s and KAB plant a tree (up to 100,000) in areas that need them in our national forests.  Additionally, now through August 25, 16 different Smurf toys will be available in Happy Meals.

Nickelodeon and Extent partner to make 30+ Nickelodeon casual and family-targeted games available via Extent’s GameTanium services, which updates with new games weekly. GameTanium will feature Nick game titles such as Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, and iCarly.  The partnership will make the Nickelodeon game titles available in an “all-you-can-eat” subscription service.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon promotes Ron Geraci to EVP/Research and Planning, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Geraci, who joined Nickelodeon in 1999, will continue to oversee research for programming, consumer insights and advertising sales for the network and its digital channels and online portals (e.g. Nick.com, NickJr.com), as well as strategic research projects and viewer and user trend research.  Prior to Nickelodeon, Geraci served in research positions at the National Basketball Association, Young and Rubicam Advertising, Showtime Networks and Nielsen. Congrats Ron!

Sesame Workshop names Jennifer Ahearn as VP/Licensing, Strategic Partner Relations.  She will report to Maura Regan, SVP and GM/Global Consumer Products.  Ahearn will be responsible for managing Sesame Workshop’s relationship with master toy licensee, Hasbro, coordinating initiatives worldwide, leading the marketing with Hasbro, and analyzing activity in each territory and monitoring the account from a global perceptive.  She will also work closely with the Education and Research team to ensure Sesame Workshop’s educational goals are part of the development process.  Most recently, Ahearn was Senior Marketing Manager, IBM.
