08.24.10
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 24, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
A panel interview, simply stated, involves more than one interviewer at the same time. The panel will include a number of people who are involved in the decision making process, each asking questions relevant to their department. Once the interview has ended, the panel can discuss the applicant, all with a common experience.
Tips for a Panel Interview
Do everything you would do for a one on one interview, plus:
Learn the names of the people interviewing you and their departments.
Engage each member of the panel in discussion, and use their names throughout the interview process.
Introductions are especially important in a panel discussion, take your time.
When seated, take out pen and paper, try to make a cheat sheet of the interviewers names and where they are sitting.
Start and finish each question, giving your focus to the person who asked you. While answering the question, scan the panel, briefly stopping on each member, try to build a rapport.
Make sure you answer the question asked.
If you can cross reference a question posed by another panelist, do so, by name.
Don’t be intimidated by panelist taking notes during the interview, this is a good thing. Worry when they don’t.
As with all interviews, prepare purposeful questions for the panelists. But a panel interview gives the unique opportunity to question panelist about their own departments.
By taking advantage of this favorable circumstance, you will demonstrate that you are prepared, have done your research and have shown genuine interest in the company as a whole.
When the interview is over, again, shake hands with everyone on the panel and ask for their business cards. When you get home, write a separate thank you note to each member of the panel, referencing their particular department.
A panel interview makes a lot of sense for a company, and can condense the agony of three or four interviews into one. As with all types of interviews, the more prepared you are walking in, the more confident you will be walking out.

Knowledge of all sorts including where the perfect job is waiting for you – is spread far and wide. It’ s easy and cheap to connect and interact with people who we never thought in the past would reachable. The Internet makes it possible for us to tap into many fast moving resources and informal information flows.
This brings us bad news and good news. First the bad: since knowledge is so widely spread about, it has become harder than ever to get what we want with a traditional search. But the good news for us, is that it is more likely than in the past that we will find something valuable through a chance encounter .
I have been inspired by The Economist’ s review of a book called The Power of Pull: How Small Moves Smartly Made Can Set Big Things in Motion. It speaks to something I believe is most important in a job search, indeed in all of our business development: and that is being open to serendipity even actually encouraging it. The authors propose a three-pronged strategy. First: approach the right people. Second: get the right people to approach you. And third: use these relationships to do things better and faster.
They have three tips. One is to live near brainy changophiles. For example, people of interest cluster together in Silicon Valley, NYC, London, Shanghai, Bangalore and so on. So if you are in such a locale, every social interaction is potentially profitable. Even chatting to your dentist, or to another parent at the little league game could lead to something interesting.
Second go on the conference trail. There are many new conferences popping up as our businesses are changing so very rapidly. They remind me, as I have so often found, that corridor conversations are far more often useful than the formal sessions.
Their third tip is to make better use of online social networks; particularly to make contact with new people. Your friends’ friends may be just who you need to be talking to.
So get out there. Be open. Be smart. Ask questions. Ask your friends who you should meet. Do it online, do it in the flesh.
Make the serendipitous possible. Position yourself both physically and psychically. The chance encounter could be your ticket to a new gig or to the new idea that changes everything.

I was recently let go (it’s tough to use the word ‘fired’) for reasons that I believe were unjust and confirmed by old coworkers and contacts that I was doing no wrong. While I have been ready to move-on for quite a while, I just don’t know the best way to explain ‘what happened’ during interviews. I’ve tried the “personality conflict” route but it’s been scaring potential employers. Any advice?
A: How do they know you were let go, you don’t have to volunteer that information might they not just think you left? I would stick to the high road and don’t get into detail about how you were let go. If you have to say something, say, “It happens. It was time to move on and it has really freed me up to find something more challenging.” Talk about what you are looking forward to. Talk perhaps about how you weren’t stretched there. Talk about how you thrive on challenges and there were not enough challenges there. Be excited about how this change is a great thing for you because it has opened your eyes to possibilities and opportunities that you had not been considering.
Stay positive at all times. Do not be defensive. Do not mention personality conflicts that can only work against you. Do not complain about your old boss. Do not run the company down. The interviewer will immediately think: “He sounds like a whiner, and that just what we don’t need.”
Quick Question: I’ve always sent an email thank you letter rather than a hand written one. Is that acceptable?
A: I know I am supposed to like the handwritten letter. But really! In this day and age?
In the media business context I find a hand-written letter smacks of trying too hard. And if it’ s been sent to me, it shows a lack of understanding of who I am and how I operate.
So perhaps if you are writing to Anna Wintour – and even then I am not sure. You should have gained a sense of their style when you met and be able to intuit their preference. (Search online for the handwritten letter that Pink sent to Anna Wintour and tell me if that is easier to read and absorb than something typed.)
For me an email is absolutely perfect. Especially if it not only says thank you, but also
adds some follow up information or response to a question you discussed at the interview. Demonstrate that you were listening, you care and you don’ t drop the ball. It’ s the content that counts.
