Based on ratings achievements during a multi-week sneak preview in four major markets, Fox Television Stations group will launch The Wendy Williams Show produced and distributed by Debmar-Mercury for a mid-2009 start on all of its 27 stations in 18 markets. The daily one-hour syndicated talk show currently airs on WNYW/New York, KTTV/Los Angeles, KDFW/Dallas and WJBK/Detroit from July 14 through this Friday. Fox Television Stations cover almost 37% of U.S. TV homes. In a unique marketing move, ABC Television will be the sole sponsor of the August 25 TV Guide issue available on newsstands and to subscribers in New York and Los Angeles. This is the first time in TV Guide’s 55 years where one advertiser will dominate all ads in a single issue. ABC is promoting its fall programming line-up with “ABC Start Here” branding and tune-in messages over 21 pages supporting ABC Primetime, ABC News, ABC Daytime, Late Night, ABC.com and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Based on new Live+7 ratings data, the season three premiere of Eureka on the SCI FI Channel July 29 averaged 1.60 million A18-49 viewers, 1.77 million A25-54 viewers and 3.36 million total viewers. Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Entertainment revealed the six match-ups for its fourth season of Iconoclasts, which premieres October 16 at 10p. The six-part series, executive produced by Robert Redford and produced by @radical.media will feature Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu with entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson; fashion designer Stella McCartney with artist Edward Ruscha; skateboarder Tony Hawk with filmmaker/actor Jon Favreau; political humorist Bill Maher with music industry executive Clive Davis; tennis star Venus Williams with musician/producer Wyclef Jean; and actress Cameron Diaz with architect Cameron Sinclair. Golf Channel opens its new original series, School of Golf: Hilton Head Island on September 2 at 11p. This real-life series witnesses young men and women as they live in a boarding school environment while they learn academics and perfect their golf game at the same time at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, SC. Hank, aka Tiger Woods’ swing coach, is also the director of instruction at the academy. For the upcoming political conventions, CNN is bringing back the “CNN Grill” where politics and food can mingle, reports Multichannel News. The 2008 CNN Grills will be open for business at the Democratic National Convention in Denver from August 25-28 taking over Brooklyn’s restaurant located near the Pepsi Center. In St. Paul for the Republican National Convention, the CNN Grill will operate from September 1-4 located at the Eagle Street Grille next to the Xcel Energy Center. Civic Entertainment Group developed the CNN Grill concept and Union Square Hospitality Group led by restaurateur Danny Meyer created the menu featuring culinary specialties from executive chef Michael Romano. Spanish network V-me will offer primetime special coverage of both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions from 9-10p each night as part of the network’s ongoing PARTICIPA 2008 election effort. Anchor Jorge Gestoso will head the network’s coverage situated in a skybox overlooking the convention floors and will be joined by the V-me Noticias team reporting from amongst the delegates and from the network’s news base in New York. WE tv has reached 70 million subscribers based on recent new launches on several Comcast systems. According to Kim Martin, EVP/GM of WE tv, the network nearly doubled its total viewers in second quarter this year, crediting its marketing strategies and original programming with such shows as Bridezillas, Platinum Weddings and High School Confidential. Making it official, Laurence Fishburne will be a series regular on CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation starting with the ninth episode. Laurence’s character is a former pathologist who is now an itinerant college lecturer, teaching a course in criminalistics. During a murder investigation, he meets the CSI team and then joins the Las Vegas Crime Lab as a Level-1 CSI. The series is produced by CBS Paramount Network Television and Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Food Network has a new series in the works tentatively called Eat the Clock that combines competitive eating with a road race, according to THR. The series watches as two contestant teams rush to different Los Angeles restaurants where they stuff themselves. The pilot goes into production soon and if it is picked up, Food Network may premiere the series in first quarter 2009. This Thursday, Gospel Music Channel (GMC) is taping a comedy special and a series of interstitials at the HA! comedy club in Times Square, New York City. The special will feature 12 family-friendly comedians and their acts taped in front of a live audience. The special will air first quarter 2009 and the various two-minute interstitials will air throughout the rest of this year. Some of the featured comedians include A.J. Jamal, Lisa Alvarado and the emcee, Jonathan Slocumb. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The NBA is in negotiations to offer live streaming of local market games in time for the 2008-09 season, according to Sports Business Journal. Each team will get to choose how to manage video streaming, interactive TV and VOD telecasts of their games within their local markets by using geo-targeted blocking technology to prohibit out-of-market streaming. ITV applications are expected to include real-time scores and statistics, polling and multiple camera angles. VOD services will include replayed games and highlights packages. Getting all the various cable and satellite regional sports network rights holders to sign off on the plan will be quite a challenge. But it may be more plausible now given what the industry has learned about broadband coverage of events being additive rather than cannibalistic. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
