Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/18/09

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

MySpace is in advanced talks to acquire social music recommendations service iLike for “around $20 million,” according to TechCrunch, citing unnamed sources. iLike, which launched in late 2006 and now claims a base of 50 million registered users, tracks users’ listening habits and recommends songs based on what your circle of friends are listening to. The acquisition would fulfill the pledge of MySpace’s new CEO Own Van Natta to burnish the service’s connections to the music industry. But it would also directly compete with the social network’s MySpace Music project, a joint venture between the Fox Interactive Media subsidiary and the major music labels. iLike has raised about $35 million to date from founders Scott Banister, Bob Pittman, Vinod Khosla and Ticketmaster.

Are you ready for some football online? DirecTV is launching an internet trial for its NFL Sunday ticket package in New York City, per USA Today. The subscription, previously available as a $100 add-on to existing Sunday Ticket subscribers, will be offered as a $349 stand alone product to potential subscribers like apartment dwellers who can’t receive satellite signals. The NFL is offering the games to DirecTV exclusively; the two recently amended their deal to include broadband rights through 2014 for a staggering $4 billion.

The internet can be as effective an advertising medium as television advertising in building retail sales of consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, according to a new survey from ComScore and dunnhumbyUSA. The studies focused on 200,000 panelists who were members of supermarket loyalty programs, whose retail buying behavior was measured through point-of-sale UPC scanners. By comparing the retail purchasing of comScore panelists who were exposed to online advertising campaigns with the purchase behavior of groups of “control” panelists who were not exposed to such campaigns, comScore was able to isolate the impact of the advertising campaigns in lifting retail sales of the advertised brands:

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Capitalizing on the customization and socialization trends in online media, news blog Huffington Post launched a new feature yesterday allowing readers to construct their own Social News Networks around their Facebook circle of friends. Until now, Facebook Connect has been utilized by media sites as a way to simplify registering and to encourage the sharing of content. This takes the integration a step further, giving readers the tools to create friendly interest groups around issues and points of view – something the site has been doing informally since it launched as a left-leaning political news aggregator in 2005. In some ways this is a natural next step for Facebook, which has provided real-time feeds for partners like CNN during live events in the past. The company also just dropped $50 million on news sharing site FriendFeed, which powers these kinds of watercooler conversations online. But the tie-up is rare for Facebook – the social network has not shared its developer API’s with many third party sites. And it’s interesting that the company chose the controversial HuffPo as a news-generating partner, given its political partisanship.
