Good morning – it’s Tuesday, August 17, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies. 

The Final Impression

How you close an interview may be equally or more important than the interviewer’s first impression.  Nerves are often the reason why an interview may not begin well and is easily forgiven, but a strong finish will compensate for a slow start and may leave a very positive impression with the interviewer.  Plus, the end of the interview often gives the interviewee the opportunity to make one last pitch for the position.

As discussed last week, ask your well prepared questions.  Dazzle the interviewer with your knowledge of the company and your intelligence by asking discerning questions.

Sum up why you should get the job.  Try to avoid cliches such as, “I am an excellent team member,” and in its stead say, “My experience will add value to your company, my background illustrates how I have consistently exceeded company goals, and I have successfully implemented a number of cost saving strategies. I am confident that I am the right candidate for this position and this company.”  This statement outlines the reasons why you should be hired, you have addressed the company’s needs in a very specific way.

Before you leave the interview, always ask the interviewer if he/she has any questions or concerns about your candidacy.  This provides the opportunity to clear up any hesitations on their part before you leave.

Ask if there is any additional information needed, extra copies of your resume or reference letters, etc.

Ask about what happens next, what their process includes.  What is the time frame for the final decision?

Request their contact information so you can follow up.  Determine whether they prefer to be contacted by phone or email.

Reiterate your enthusiasm for the job, without sounding desperate.  Let them know how much you like the company and how all would benefit from you getting the position.

And finally, THANK THEM.  Stand up, make eye contact and give their hand a good shake while sincerely thanking them for this opportunity.

As stated in many previous Cynopsis articles, don’t forget to send a thank you letter to everyone that you met with, even if the interview didn’t go well.  Hiring managers consider this to be proper form and are amazed how many candidates neglect this step.

How to Build and Keep your “Career Confidence”

In these tough economic times, it is easy to have your confidence shaken when there is a lay-off or when you get passed over for a promotion, or when you didn’t get hired for that “dream job.” Even when things are going seemingly well, you feel that you must constantly prove your worth and value in order to keep your job.

Some people suffer from what is known as career insecurity. Career insecurity is the perceived fear of losing one’s employment and status.  According to Kimberly Roush of All Star Executive Coaching in the Los Angeles area, “many people place a lot of self-worth in their job or title. Without it, they fear they will be ‘nothing.’ Fear can be immobilizing and lead to inaction when action is the most critical.” She suggests, “thinking of yourself as an independent agent of your own career and strive to be proactive rather than reactive.”

With that said how do you build and keep your confidence as you move along your career path?  Here are six important tips to remember:

  • There is a saying by Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself because everyone else is taken.” This is so true. When you try to be someone else it could potentially be perceived as inauthentic.
  • Always do what you feel is right.  Even if others criticize your decisions.  Trust yourself.
  • Keep a positive support system around you at all times. Every career professional should have a mentor or coach in his or her corner.
  • Identify your successes in your career and in your life.  Write down your accomplishments, no matter how small. You will be amazed at how amazing you really are.
  • Think of failure as a good thing. Failure is all part of your success. If you haven’t failed, at least once, you’re not growing.
  • Be willing to take risks. If that means branching out on your own and starting your own business or taking another position to advance your career, then do it. Nothing says confidence more than taking a calculated risk.

Building your career confidence takes time.  Consider this, as you move up the career ladder, you will gain more skills and as a result, more confidence in your abilities.  Remember to ‘be you.’  By being yourself, knowing your value, trusting yourself and taking risks, your confidence will soar at each step in your career

I do half of my bosses work, and after I got hired, I found out that my position is sort of a dead end because the company has no plans of promoting my boss. He loves me because I make his job so much easier. He tells other people he won’t let me go, but I want to move outward and upward but within the same company. I can’t tell the truth to HR, about doing his work for him, and discussions with him only end in empty promises. What should I do?

That is a tough one. I will assume that you do like your boss and you don’t want to let him down, but I would suggest that you stay true to yourself and focus on your career goals. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities within the company, be discrete, and if you see something that you feel would be a fit, apply. If that opportunity manifest into a potential job offer, explain to your boss again your desire to advance within the company and that an excellent opportunity has come your way. If he blocks you, find a new job at a different company.

Love my company, hate my job. A hiring freeze is in affect, any suggestions?

If you can stand to wait out the hiring freeze, do so. Focus on other aspects of your life: friends, family, hobbies, or maybe volunteer your time to a worthwhile organization. What you don’t want to happen is that you find a new job that you love, but hate the company; which could mean the job may not be as great as you think.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) and Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) elevated Robert Read to SVP/Worldwide HD Marketing. Previously, Robert was VP/HD Strategic Marketing, Specialty Product and USHE Franchise Management. In his new role, Robert will manage Universal’s hi-def efforts globally as the worldwide strategist of all new releases, catalogue and television offerings on Blu-ray in addition to other new formats such as 3D and digital home entertainment media. Robert also continues to be based in Los Angeles and will remain in his current role as Brand Marketing head on all Focus Features and Rogue Pictures products domestically.

Miami-based online media company, Batanga, Inc. hired Olivia Maloney as VP/Sales for the Eastern region. Olivia will be headquartered out of the company’s New York office and will report directly to Rafael Urbina, Chairman/CEO. Olivia joins from AOL Latino where she served as Director/US Hispanic Sales and Solutions for AOL Advertising.

WNET.ORG named Roslyn Davis as GM for THIRTEEN; John Servidio as GM of WLIW21; and Mary Lockhart as GM of CreativeNewsGroup. All appointments are effective immediately. Most recently, Roslyn and John were Acting GMs for their respective entities while Mary replaces Andrew Schmertz in her new role following his departure to pursue other interests.

Tracie Wilson takes on the newly created position as SVP/Programming and Development, Stamford Media Center with NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution. Tracie will supervise the unit’s three first-run nationally syndicated talk shows, The Jerry Springer Show, Maury and The Steve Wilkos Show based at the Stamford Media Center in Stamford, CT. Tracie will further act as a community liaison between the shows and the city of Stamford and she will oversee the production facility at the Stamford Media Center. Tracie reports to Robert Fitzpatrick, EVP/Business Affairs, NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution and will also continue to work with Linda Finnell, SVP/Programming and Development, NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution in the area of new talent and programming development.

McCann Midwest tapped Joe Garcia as President beginning August 16. Joe succeeds Garry Neel, who served a dual position heading McCann Midwest and supervising the General Motors business. Garry will now take on a dedicated role for General Motors overseeing the business worldwide and in the US as EVP/Global Account Director, McCann Worldgroup. Joe previously was in charge of BBDO’s Detroit operations and headed that agency’s Chrysler business.

David Friend was appointed SVP/News for the CBS Television Stations group. Since June 2006, David has been the VP/News Director at WCBS-TV in New York and will continue to manage the station’s news department. His new role, though, will give him added responsibility to work with the local management teams at CBS O&Os to oversee all news production and news operations. David’s new role will have him involved with communication and team building, creating newsgathering resources and sharing best practices with his team members across the group. David will additionally work with CBS Radio executives with the goal to develop and strengthen local news partnerships, and he will also be a liaison with members of the CBS News management team.

Peter Block joins the VOD service and website, FEARnet as President/GM as announced by its partners Sony Pictures Television, Lionsgate and Comcast. Diane Robina, the former President of FEARnet since its inception, will continue with the multi-platform horror, thriller and suspense destination into the fall until she departs to TV Guide Network as EVP/Programming, Production and Marketing.

JUMA Entertainment promoted Melissa Calheno to VP/Operations where she will head all in-house operations including new business development and growth goals for the company. Melissa will further manage integrated event development and media consulting. She continues to report to Robert Horowitz, President. Additionally, JUMA Entertainment hired Alaina Killoch as Manager/Development to offer series development and network programming analysis. Alaina joins from the Alternative Series and Specials Department at ABC. JUMA also added Dionne Clifton as Development Associate where she will work with the strategy and development of new series. Both Alaina and Dionne report jointly to Robert Horowitz and Lewis Fenton, Executive Producer and Head/Production. 

Nat Fuchs takes on the new position as SVP/Group Director, Talent and Human Resources at SMG, effective immediately. Nat will be in charge of talent and human resources activities for MediaVest. He will further concentrate on Starcom MediaVest Group talent efforts in various worldwide markets. Based in New York, Nat reports to Bill Tucker, CEO, MediaVest for his MediaVest duties and to Bernard Bedon, EVP/Global Director of Human Resources and Talent Management in his encompassing SMG position.

Comedy Central tagged Steve Grimes as SVP/Digital Media to oversee the network’s digital media staff and its digital media efforts across all platforms. Steve will additionally be the network’s main contact within MTV Networks. Based at Comedy Central’s New York City office, Steve reports to Erik Flannigan, EVP/Digital Media, MTV Networks Entertainment Group. Steve joins from Topps, the sports-card company headed by Michael Eisner; Steve was VP/Chief Digital Officer.

Tony Cardinale takes on the newly-created position as SVP/Strategic Insights for NBC Universal Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks. Since 2008, Tony held the post as SVP/Research and Insights, Bravo Media and Oxygen Media and Women at NBCU. Now, in his new role, Tony’s scope will include strategic oversight for research across NBCU’s Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks. He will manage the process of identifying insights that help spur brand and audience development, viewer engagement and loyalty among other key duties. Tony will further build a team adding research executives in positions for Bravo, Oxygen and Women at NBCU. Tony reports jointly to Lauren Zalaznick, President/NBC Universal Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks and to Alan Wurtzel, President/Research, NBC Universal. 

MSG Entertainment (MSGE) appointed Phil Ernst as SVP/Touring Productions to supervise all facets of MSG Entertainment’s touring productions such as Radio City Christmas Spectacular Arena and theater tours among other productions. Phil will work closely with MSGE’s marketing, promotion, public relations and production teams to oversee merchandise and sponsorship fulfillment.

Joan Robbins was elevated to President/Talent Relations with Entertainment Studios, Inc. where she will manage all talent relations for the company’s programming and networks. Joan started with Entertainment Studios in 1994 as the company’s first full-time employee.

Jamie MacDonald was named Director/Sales with Litton News Source where he will be in charge of selling news products and new business opportunities within the News Source division. The product lineup includes Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping Reports, Dr. Mallika Marshall and Metro Traffic. Jamie will report to Meg LaVigne, VP/Sales and Strategy.

Joy Tashjian Marketing Group, LLC (JTMG) welcomes Grace Ressler as Director/Licensing and Publishing. Grace will head JTMG’s Los Angeles office. Prior to this appointment, Grace was Director/Licensing and Publishing at DIC Entertainment and Sony Pictures Consumer Products.

Bryan Norcross joined The Weather Channel (TWC) as the network’s new on-air hurricane specialist for the season. Bryan, who was previously the hurricane analyst for CBS and the chief meteorologist at WTVJ/Miami, will work in tandem with TWC’s hurricane expert Dr. Rick Knabb to offer viewers in-depth tropical storm coverage and analyses during the hurricane season.

Six Point Harness Animation Studio hired Chapman Maddox as Director/Development. Chapman comes from Cartoon Network/Adult Swim where he worked in comedy development and current series. In his new role, Chapman will concentrate on developing a roster of original shows targeting kids, adults and the digital arena.
