Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/16/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Nothing a like a huge deal to shake things up on a Monday morning. Google has agreed to acquire struggling mobile phone unit Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion – adding 19,000 employees, giving the search giant a more direct hand in hardware designs and providing the company with a huge portfolio of patents as it fends off intellectual property attacks on the Android market. Google, which has failed to ignite much interest with its Google TV product, also gains a foothold into the pay TV space with the acquisition of Motorola’s Home set-top box division. With many expecting Apple to come out with an integrated TV set of its own, the move may prove to be not-a-moment-too soon for Google to keep pace with its rival. The companies expect to complete the deal by early 2012, pending approval from stockholders and regulators in the U.S. and Europe.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Episodes from Fox‘s primetime line-up will now be available on Time Warner Cable‘s Primetime On Demand service the day after they air – the last of the 4 major networks to be covered by the service. The shows, including Glee, House and Family Guy, include commercials that cannot be fast-forwarded and are available eight days after their initial broadcast. TWC subscribers will not have access to the network’s TV Everywhere platform however, which is thus far limited to the Hulu Plus subscription VOD service in which Fox is a shareholder.

Pent-up demand for football helped NFL.com draw record crowds for its digital products over the weekend. NFL Digital Media properties, including NFL.com and NFL Mobile Only from Verizon, drew the highest numbers ever for the first day of a NFL preseason, growing unique visitors by 86% year-over-year. Fans also streamed 138% more NFL.com video than last year.

Turner’s CartoonNetwork.com unveiled today a branded, ad-supported section that will host video content and games from 7 LEGO brands, including: Ninjago, LEGO’s Pirates of the Caribbean, Pharaoh’s Quest, Hero Factory, City, Alien Conquest and LEGO Games. The deal, brokered by Starcom USA, marks the first time an outside brand has ever been featured on the site.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

British TV streaming start-up Acorn TV acquired the exclusive digital rights for the Emmy-nominated mini series Lost Empires, starring a very young Colin Firth in one of his first leading roles.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The online ad market is poised to increase by a healthy 20% in the U.S. this year thanks to an influx of new spending from retail and consumer packaged goods (CPG), according to new eMarketer estimates. Retail, already the highest-spending vertical online, will add over $1.3 billion to online budgets this year for growth of 24% and a total of $6.78 billion. The CPG industry will spend $640 million more to advertise online this year than last, and will continue to grow spending by 14% to 29% each year through 2015.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Time Warner Cable, the #2 MSO in the U.S., outbid Cablevision and others for New York-based Insight Communications (the #9 MSO), purchased from a group of private equity firms led by the Carlyle Group for $3 billion in cash. Insight serves some 537,000 high-speed data subscribers, 679,000 video subscribers and 297,000 voice subscribers in the Midwest.

Interpublic has reportedly sold half of its 0.4% stake in Facebook for a total of $133 million, pegging the social networking giant’s valuation at $66.5 billion. Interpublic, which earned the right to invest by committing to $10 million in ad buys for its clients, is believed to have paid less than $5 million for its stake in 2006 – not a bad return on the investment.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Love ’em or hate ’em, cell phones have become ubiquitous part of the American landscape, according to a new Pew Internet & American Life Project survey, used by American adults to communicate with others, access information instantly and, of course, stave off boredom. Text messaging and picture taking continue to top the list of ways that Americans use their phones – 73% use their phones for each of these purposes – with other common activities including sending photos or videos to others (54%) and accessing the internet (44%). Smartphone owners greatly over-index compared to feature phone users in all of these categories, including sending texts, and smartphones are much more likely to be owned by younger users: one in five Americans age 50 and older own a smartphone of some kind, compared with roughly half of those under the age of 50, with 52% of 18-29 year olds and 45% of 30-49 year olds included in that group.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

College students can download the new Amazon Student app for the iPhone/iPod Touch to compare prices on textbooks or find out what they can get for used books from last semester. The app scans the barcode of any book to evaluate what it’s worth in trade-in value (they get paid with an Amazon gift card instead of cash.)

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Wall Street Journal’s recently redesigned AllThingsD blog unveiled a new social media strategy yesterday, launching 15 new topic-based Twitter feeds about acquisitions, social, mobile, venture capital and other categories that will help readers track areas they’re interested in. A partnership with tweet optimization start-up SocialFlow will mean stories will be tweeted in both real-time and at delayed times during off peak hours to give the highest-impact stories maximum bang for their buck. (The idea is to not to bury the lead, so to speak, cluttering the feeds up with lesser stories during prime-time hours.)
