08/15/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 15, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox News is reporting two of its news crew in Gaza City were abducted by Palestinian gunmen yesterday.  The marked TV news mobile truck in which the newsmen were riding and was parked near the headquarters of the Palestinian security services, was boxed in by two vehicles, and masked men then kidnapped correspondent Steve Centanni and cameraman Olaf Wiig.  At this writing, no further updates are available. This is not the first time foreigners have been kidnapped in Gaza, but all those before were released within hours.

Tonight’s Premiere:
fuse:  The P.A. at 1030p

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV:  Real World: Key West at 10p
Oxygen: Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency at 10p

The FCC sent out three and a half dozen letters of inquiry to 77 broadcast license holders asking about the use of Video News Releases (VNRs) and using them as actual news stories without informing viewers they are sponsored packages, per Hollywood Reporter. Says FCC Commish Jonathan Adelstein, “The public has a legal right to know who seeks to persuade them so they can make up their own minds about the credibility of the information presented.  Shoddy practices make it difficult for viewers to tell the difference between news and propaganda.”  The inquiry is a follow-up to a complaint filed last spring by the Free Press and the Center for Media and Democracy who reported VNRs had been aired on TV without properly informing viewers they were sponsored by various corporations.  If the FCC determines stations did not properly identify the sponsored VNRs, the stations could be slapped with a $32,500 fine for each such violation. In fact, stations could lose their licenses as a result, according to Section 507 of the Communications Act.

The celebrities who will be hoofing it up for ABC’s next installment of Dancing with the Stars are: MSNBC news anchor Tucker Carlson; High School Musical teen actress Monique Coleman; country-music singer Sara Evans; pop singer Willa Ford; Vivica A. Fox; Harry Hamlin; Joe Lawrence; Mario Lopez; actress/model Shanna Moakler; NFL Super Bowl champion Emmitt Smith; and Jerry Springer. Season three, hosted by hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, premieres with a 2-hour special on September 12 at 8p.

In an exclusive multi-year contract, Touchstone Television will partner with Gameloft, a developer and publisher of mobile games, to develop, publish and distribute mobile games based on the ABC shows Lost and Desperate Housewives. Both mobile games are scheduled to release early next year.

For your scheduling purposes, CBS has announced the finale dates of two of its summer reality series: Rock Star: Supernova will have its grand finale on September 13 at 8p; and Big Brother: All Stars will end its run on September 12 at 8p.  Mark your calendars accordingly.

ImaginAsian TV acquired the Korean drama serial Princess Hours from the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. It is scheduled to premiere August 28 as a primetime show on iaTV at 8p. The series will air in its original Korean with English subtitles.  Based on a Korean comic book series, the show is a modern day Cinderella story that takes place in a fictional Korea under a constitutional monarchy.  Princess Hours series will be accompanied by The Lounge, ImaginAsian TV’s original program hosted by Emily Chang. The Lounge host-wraps, done in English, will give a behind-the-scenes look at the series and some of the newest trends in Korean culture.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

ABC has ordered up a new comedy project called Miss/Guided from 20th and Katalyst Films, about a woman who returns to her old high school, this time as a guidance counselor. The pilot was written by Caroline Williams, who is also a staff writer on NBC’s The Office.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

fuse has upped Fernando Romero to VP/Advertising Sales, Digital Media. Fernando’s mission will be to increase sales on the various digital platforms including mobile, on demand, online and the company’s new Digital Broadband Marquee. He will report to Bill Rosolie, SVP/Ad Sales.

Joe DeMaio has been hired as Director for the ABC late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. Joe was previously at MTV where he worked on various specials and award shows.

ABC News Productions has named Veronique Bernard as Director/Development and Justin Sturken as Producer. Veronique was previously the director of development at National Geographic Film and Television and Justin hails from VH-1 where he executive produced several series.
