Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney Channel US gets Labor Day weekend going with the premiere of its new movie Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, starring Demi Lovato and Jonas Brothers, on Friday, September 3 at 8p. The holiday weekend will feature four plays of the movie (8p each night), various versions, with pre-debut support from an on-demand release, online and Radio Disney events. An extended version of the movie, which features two exclusive new musical numbers, will be available on Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD, releasing Tuesday, September 7. During breaks in some of the plays of the movie over the weekend sponsorship messaging designed to support the movie’s themes will air from Sara Lee Soft & Smooth bread, Best Western International, Honda Odyssey and Verizon. Here is how the lead-up, premiere and weekend will play out:
- Wednesday, September 1 – Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam will be available via Disney Channel on Demand for Verizon Fios subscribers (and via select affiliates); Radio Disney airs part one of On the Set, recorded on the set of the movie, 6-8p and at RadioDisney.com (
- Friday, September 3 – part two of Radio Disney’s On the Set along with a pre-show hosted by Ernie D 6-8p; hosted by the cast, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam has its TV premiere with audio simulcast on Radio Disney; additionally, mobile video simulcast of the movie for Flo TV, MobiTV and Sprint TV; fans can also customize a page for the Camp Rock 2 Year Book, collect items and access exclusive content via DisneyChannel.com
- Saturday, September 4 – the Rock Along version of The Final Jam airs on the network at 8p, with lyrics on-screen and at DisneyChannel.com
- Sunday, September 5 – the Sunday Dance Jam edition of the movie airs at 8p, hosted by Demi Lovato and Jonas Brothers, who offer a behinds the scenes look at the movie.
- Monday, September 6 – Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam encores at 8p.
Luken Communications, a Chattanooga, Tennessee based company that operates RTV (Retro Television Network), unveils plans to launch a new kid and baby boomer-targeted network (title TBA). So far Luken has acquired a mix of animated and live-action series from Classic Media and other libraries for the network, including Richie Rich, Casper, The Lone Ranger, Mr. Magoo, Secret of Isis, Zorro, Shazam and Lassie, as well as shorts such as Dick Tracy and Fraidy Cat. Luken reports that affiliate deals are in the works and plans to make further announcements later this year.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Germany’s Constantin Films (Resident Evil, Fantastic Four) is developing a new CGI animated 3D adaption of Tarzan, per Variety. The movie will be produced in English, with Constantin-based Robert Kulzer (Resident Evil: Afterlife, The Three Musketeers) and Reinhard Klooss (Animals United) serving as producers. Constantin acquired the rights to the Tarzan books from the estate of author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan. Ambient Entertainment (Animal United) will work on the animation for Tarzan.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video will release DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection releases on DVD and Blu-ray (PG-13, estimated 62 minutes), November 9, 2010. The DC Showcase will also be available On Demand and for download. Distributed by Warner Home Video, the DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection includes the brand new Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, as well as extended versions previously released shorts The Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow. Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam (1×22) features the voices of Jerry O’Connell as Captain Marvel, George Newbern as Superman, Arnold Vosloo as Black Adam and James Garner as The Wizard. The Superman/Shazam episode was executive produced by Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday), directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League, Avatar: The Last Airbender), and written by Michael Jelenic (Wonder Woman).
Time Warner Cable (TWC) launches CAMM Worldwide, its new initiative that aims to explore differing teen attitudes toward math and science around the world. The efforts is part of Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), TWC’s philanthropic effort that aims to encourage young people to further their education and choose careers in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). Chorion inks a deal with the NBA (National Basketball Association) and Junk Food Clothing Company for a co-branded NBA/Mr. Men and Little Miss apparel line, which will feature Little Miss Sunshine and launch at US retailers for the star of the 2010-11 NBA season. Targeted to young adults (juniors, women and men) the new lines will feature Mr. Men and Little Miss characters and NBA and team logos and include products such as T-shirts and knit tops. The lines will be available at the NBA Store in NYC, NBAStore.com ( www.nbastore.com ), arenas, department stores, online retailers and boutiques.
FremantleMedia Enterprises enters into a licensing deal with Leomil Group to launch a line of Rebecca Bonbon footwear and apparel across major European territories. The first series of products under the deal are targeted to kids and tweens and will be available beginning winter 2011 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux and France. Created by Yuko Shimizu, the original Hello Kitty designer, Rebecca Bonbon ( www.rebeccabonbon.com ) is a fashionable French bulldog character who lives in a NYC apartment overlooking Central Park. Already popular in Japan, Rebecca Bonbon debuts this month across the US and Canada in Sears and Kmart stores with products including apparel, outerwear, headwear, accessories, bags, cosmetics, sleepwear, home decor, plush and pets products.
