Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 9, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

~ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE~
How To Pitch Yourself
by Michael Pollock

When you’re pitching yourself for a job, you’re pitching your own reality show, with you as the central character!

You have to tell your story and help your potential employer understand how your chapter one will be and how your chapter six will be. You have to show appropriate heart and emotion. You have to show how you can hit the ground running and sustain that pace.

But somehow we see pitching ourselves as different from the work we do every day. We know how to pitch a show or an idea: we do our homework and find out what the audience is like and we go in with a quick, clear presentation – led by a sizzle reel that knocks them off their feet – of why this is the idea they should buy and why we are the person to make it happen for them.

But for some reason, when it comes to trying to get a job, we check all this smart behavior and insight at the door.  We don’t like to talk about ourselves. We don’t understand what they want or why they called us in. We don’t know how to describe our value to them and we don’t… we don’t sizzle.

So to prep for your own pitch, be clear as to who you are and why anyone should care. Be clear as to what a new employer is looking for so that you can fit the bill. If you realize you don’t fit the bill, don’t force it and move on. That will leave them with respect for your ability to think on your feet.

Think of yourself as a show and present the highlights. Don’t make them sweat through everything you’ve ever done – dazzle them with the main points of your successes. And talk with excitement about how your time with them will unfold. Crackle with excitement for them and they won’t be able to resist?

Questions from our Readers
Answered by
AnnMarie McIlwain

How can I find out the inside skinny on what it’s really like to work for a company?

If you want more of a real feel on what working for a specific company is like, there are a few good sites to check out. One is GlassDoor, which has helpful, insider info on what the interview process and daily life is like at thousands of companies, including the media sector. You can also find current job openings and salaries by position. Vault.com is another site to look at, though it has fewer media jobs than Glassdoor. Many tech companies and startups are also profiled on Crunchbase. A quick search will give you launch dates, fundraising efforts and results, officers, Compete.com audience size, recent articles, and more. Salary.com is a great resource for info on compensation.

Of course, you should always try to connect with someone on LinkedIn who either works for your target company or works for a competitor, and ask them for a quick phone call to get their perspective.

What kind of updates should I post on social media to maximize my presence?

Updating your status on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and other social networks shows your contacts that you’re engaged, available and keeps you top of mind. Joining professional groups on LinkedIn, posting relevant articles or white papers, and suggesting good resources for job seeking are all great ways to build other’s awareness of your activities. If you’re following a few people who work for companies that you’re interested in and they update their profiles, keep track of these updates and send a thoughtful message that refers to their news.  LinkedIn just launched new search functionality which can really help with this process.

See what your social graph looks like on Facebook and whether you can be seen by connections of your Facebook friends who work in companies that you have targeted. If not, change the controls so that you are.

As for Twitter, tweet and re-tweet articles relevant to your profession or industry.  Maybe there’s a webinar, Meetup, or event that others would like to know about.  The objective with Twitter is to follow others from whom you can learn and to jump in and add to the conversation.  This ups your industry cred.
