Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports locked in a multi-media rights extension with Golden Boy Promotions to carry live boxing both in the United States and abroad. The new deal will look to establish a new Monday night boxing franchise on FOX Sports 1 with FOX Sports keeping exclusive domestic rights to 48 live two-hour events (with two or three fights per event) annually. FS1 will slate 24 live events per year, with FOX Deportes carrying all 48 events live.
NBC Sports Network announced that the channel had wrapped up the first quarter on a roll, with viewership up 14% compared to 2012, according to Nielsen. Audiences were bolstered by seven of the 10 most-watched NHL games in the network’s history, with NHL programming up 58% compared to Q1 in 2012, to mark the best start in network history. Other highlights saw The Dan Patrick Show viewership grow 58% compared to time period in 2012 Q1; while the opening IndyCar telecast rose 78% and MLS games grew 8% over last year.
FUEL TV came out of the period with its most-watched first quarter ever, including five of the network’s top-10 most-watched days, according to Nielsen. The channel’s March scores tied with February 2013 as the network’s highest-rated ever in both households as well as in the M18-49 target demographic, buoyed by viewership of UFCon FUEL TV 8: Silva vs. Stann.
Olympic gold medal downhill skier Picabo Street is now part of the FOX Sports team, inking a deal to serve as analyst for the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, Russia. Street will offer analysis during all women’s and men’s skiing events, as well as daily commentary prior to and throughout The Games across all of FSMG’s platforms including FOX Sports 1, FOXSports.com and FOX Sports Radio.
FOX Sports also announced that veteran sports producer David Neal was appointed to the newly created position of Coordinating Producer for FOX Sports Media Group’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII next winter where he will be responsible for managing all live programming broadcast by FOX Sports; FOX Sports 1 as well as FOX Sports’ regional networks, and digital platforms.
World Series champion Cliff Floyd and World Series-winning coach Joey Cora are joining MLB Network where they will serve as analysts, appearing across MLB Network’s programming. Floyd debuts Monday, April 15 on MLB Tonight at 8p while Cora will make his MLB Network debut on MLB Tonight on May 6.
The hunt for untapped soccer talent returns with Sueno MLS 2013 Presented by Allstate, a nationally televised search for undiscovered youth soccer talent in North America. This year, the competition will be staged by three Major League Soccer teams the Colorado Rapids, D.C. United and LA Galaxy and will be chronicled by Univision’s Republica Deportiva. Fernando Fiore and Felix Fernandez host starting this Sunday at noon with the local market tryouts in the Washington D.C. area, hosted by D.C. United.
WWE announced that Sunday’s WrestleMania 29became the highest grossing live event in its history, breaking the record for MetLife Stadium’s highest grossing entertainment event. The event grossed $12.3 million, with 80,676 fans from all 50 states and 34 countries in attendance.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards is return to the booth for ESPN, serving as an analyst for the next three races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Edwards will join Allen Bestwick and Andy Petree in the broadcast booth starting Friday at 8p on ESPN2 for the first of the three races.
Universal Sports Network is set to offer up television and online coverage of the 117thBoston Marathon on Monday, from 9:30a-12:30p with on-air coverage hosted by Paul Sunderland. In addition to race, Universal Sports will air a preview show featuring analysis of the field on Sunday at 4p. UniversalSports.com offers a live stream of the event presented by Timex.
NESN reports good news from its simultaneous coverage of both the Boston Red Sox on NESN and Boston Bruins on NESNplus last Thursday night. The dual telecasts drew a combined 14.3 HH rating and24 share in the Boston DMA according to Nielsen, with the Red Sox game pulling a 7.8/13 while the Bruins earned a 6.5/11.
Here are the top five moments from each game of Saturday’s Final Four action, according to TiVo Research and Analytics, based on approximately two million U.S. TiVo households.
Game 1 Wichita vs. Louisville
1. 8:36p-Louisville’s Luke Hancock misses his second free throw with 8 seconds left and the Cardinals lead at 3.
2. 8:30p-Louisville extends their lead to four on the Russ Smith free throw.
3. 8:22p-On an assist from Fed Van Vleet, Car Hall makes a layup for Wichita State to tie the game at 60 with 3:25 to go.
4. 8:18p-Louisville misses two opportunities to extend their lead with under four minutes left in the second half.
5. 8:12p-Coming off Wichita State’s first turnover of the game, Luke Hancock makes a three-pointer to give the Cardinals their first lead of the second half.
Game 2 Syracuse vs. Michigan
1. 11:36p-Down by 3 with seven seconds to go Trevor Cooney of Syracuse misses a jumper and Michigan gains possession of the ball.
2. 11:32p-With Michigan up by two and 19 seconds on the clock, Syracuse point guard Brandon Triche is called for charging.
3. 11:23p-Tim Hardaway Jr. sinks two free throws to extend the Wolverines lead to six.
4. 11:27p- Triche misses a free throw that would have cut the Michigan lead to 3.
5. 11:19p-Syracuse forward James Southerland makes a dunk to bring the team to within four.

Major League Baseball Properties announced a multi-year deal with Kellogg Company that make the famed cereal- and snack-maker an official sponsor of MLB. As part of the deal, Kellogg Company will operate a nationwide sweepstakes featuring MLB branding and Club logos on supermarket in-store, point-of-sale displays and more than 27 million specially-marked packages of Kellogg’s products.
WWE is now a Founding Partner for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, which takes place in New Jersey from June 14-21, 2014. WWE will utilize all of its platforms, spanning TV broadcasts, live events, digital and social media, to generate awareness and raise funds in support of the USA Games. WWE will also serve as the Official Production Partner of the Games, filming the Opening Ceremonies, producing daily recaps of the sporting competitions and special events throughout the Games as well as an hour-long television show highlighting the Games.
The NBA, Multi Screen Media, the NBA’s broadcast partner in India, and Magic Bus, a non-profit organization that works with youth from vulnerable communities, announced a partnership to develop a NBA Cares program throughout India. Through the partnership, weekly basketball programs will be used to promote education, health, and fitness to boys and girls ages 7-14 starting in June 2013.

MLB Advanced Media revealed that its MLB.com At Bat application passed the four million download mark on Friday, just five days into the 2013 MLB regular season. Last year, At Bat reached that mark on May 18 45 days after Opening Day en route to its record-setting 6.7 million downloads. Collectively, all of the MLBAM-developed mobile apps, including At Bat, At The Ballpark and Beat The Streak Presented by Dunkin’ Donuts, have accumulated five million downloads, to more than double last year’s comparative first week.
