Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 4, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

MTV has established MTV Tr3s (MTV Three), a new channel targeted to P12-34 bilingual and bicultural US Latinos.  Slated to launch 4Q 2006, the MTV Tr3s mission is to fuse American and Latin music and cultures with its programming, which will include lifestyle series, customized MTV music franchises and news documentaries.  Leading MTV Tr3s will be Lucia Ballas-Traynor as GM; long time MTV’er Jose Tillán will head the channel’s Music Programming and Talent Strategy, adding to his current responsibilities for MTV Networks Latin America; and Lily Neumeyer has been named VP/Programming and Production.  A 16-year veteran of MTVN, Neumeyer was most recently Director/News and Development/MTV.  Previously MTV has launched MTV Chi, a channel targeted to Chinese Americans, and MTV Desi for music fans with roots in the Indian sub-content living in the US.

The final box office numbers are in and Ice Age: The Meltdown took in a domestic total of $68 million in its first weekend, making it the third biggest animated movie opening of all time behind The Incredibles ($70.5 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.3 million).

After 15 years as America Online, the corporation has officially changed its name and will hence forward be known as AOL.  With the name change AOL’s legal structure has also changed from a corporation to a limited liability company.


French Canadian cable channel VRAK.TV has picked up Beyond the Break, the tween/teen targeted series from MarVista Entertainment.  VRAK.TV is a French language channel targeted to teens.  Beyond the Break, produced by MarVista Entertainment and Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, will debut in the US on The N summer 2006, and has also been sold to broadcaster M6 (France).  Beyond the Break was created by Michael Jacobs and BME’s David Brookwell and Sean McNamara.  Marvista handles the worldwide distribution of the series.

Nick Jr. has begun production on a second cycle of The Backyardigans.  The 20 new episodes of the 3D music-based preschool series are slated to launch this October.  A Nick Jr. and Nelvana co-production, The Backyardigans was created by Janice Burgess, who also serves as its Executive Producer with Robert Scull and Jonny Belt, Co-Executive Producer/Supervising Creative Director.

In other Nelvana news:

  • Nelvana put together several holiday-themed specials of its tween-targeted series 6Teen to specifically for international broadcasters.  These special include both a Valentine’s Day and Halloween themed special.  Additionally, a new 48-min special, which will be offered as a DTV this fall, is also in production.  The show has been sold to broadcasters, including France 3, Cartoon Network Latin America, Canal+ Cyfrowy Poland, YLE Finland, Plug TV (French Belgium), VRT (Flemish Belgium), ABS/CBN (Philippines) and NOGA Israel, as well as a recent deal with Nicktoons Network in the US.
  • Nelvana has inked a deal with Nickelodeon International for its animated series Wayside School (26 x 30 min) for broadcast in the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia, Benelux, Israel, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia.  The TV show is based on the Wayside book series by author Louis Sachar (Holes), which by the way are really funny books.
  • It is official: Discovery Kids has inked a deal with Nelvana for its new preschool series Willa’s Wild Life (26 x 30 min).  A few weeks ago we told you Nelvana had sealed a deal for series in the US.  The series is based on the book An Octopus Followed Me Home, by Oswald creator Dan Yaccarino, about a young girl who brings home stray penguins and hippos, all of which offer her advice, while her conventional father has to find a way to deal with his daughter’s slightly off-beat ways.

Ellis Releasing has inked a distribution deal with Fireworks International to handle Fireworks’ factual library, where available outside Canada and the US.  Programming under the agreement includes: Real Kids, Real Adventures (39 x 30 min), profiles of real kids who used their wits to save themselves or others; The Aquanauts (46 x 30 min), follows young, athletic people who go in search of the unknown, endangered animals and some danger (e.g. swimming with Great White sharks); Pet Connection (65 x 30 min), veterinary authority Dr. Berney Pukay looks at the world of pets (of all kinds) and their owners.


LAIKA Entertainment has acquired the film rights to Here Be Monsters, a bestselling UK kid’s novel by writer/illustrator Alan Snow, with plans to develop it as an animated feature film.  While no specific deal terms were announced the company says it paid a “‘significant’ six figure sum” in a bidding war for the movie rights.  With 500+ black and white illustrations featured throughout the book, the story revolves around a young boy who tries to save his town from a dastardly takeover plot.  Here Be Monsters will be published in the US this July by Simon and Schuster and was published in the UK by Oxford University Press.

National Geographic Television & Film’s Kids’ Programming and Production unit has begun production on Toot & Puddle: I’ll Be Home for Christmas, a made-for-DVD animated special slated for a holiday 2006 release.  The special is also available to domestic and international broadcasters as a one-hour format.  Targeted to K3-8, Toot & Puddle: I’ll Be Home for Christmas is based on Holly Hobbie’s Toot & Puddle franchise about two piglet friends.  The special is animated by Grand Slamm Children’s Films.


Super RTL, the German kid’s broadcaster, has acquired the rights to Totally Spies! from Marathon Animation.  The animated series is slated to debut on the network July 2006.  Totally Spies! debuted on TF1 (France) in January 2006 and airs around the world on channels including Cartoon Network US; Cartoon Network Japan; Teletoon (Canada); Jetix Europe; Jetix Latin America; Media Set Rete (Italy); Channel 4 and GMTV (UK), Disney Asia, Network Ten and Nickelodeon Australia, La Forta (Spain),


Airborne Entertainment and Dualstar Entertainment Group have entered into two deals to deliver mobile content based on the mary-kateandashley brand and the Sprouse Bros. brand, the newly formed brand of Dylan and Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody).  Mobile content for both brands is slated to launch this summer.  Additionally, Airborne will create and host Direct-to-Consumer mobile storefronts for both marketandashley.com and sprousebros.com.  Dualstar is Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s company.

HIT Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Stonyfield Farm, the organic yogurt manufacturer, to underwrite the Barney & Friends TV series, which air on PBS Kids.  As of last month a 15-second Stonyfield Farm sponsor credit is running at the open and close of the show.  Additionally, the agreement includes promotional inserts in Barney DVDs and online exposure on both www.barney.com and www.pbskids.org/barney. Stonyfield Farm’s kid specific products include YoBaby, organic milk and yogurt for babies and toddlers.
