Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, April 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Comedy Central.com is launching an interactive online comedy school Crash Course in which students create an avatar they use to polish their standup skills. Comedian Ted Alexandro has developed a ten-part curriculum covering writing, delivery, style, originality, stage mechanics and the business of comedy. Clips from the Comedy Central archive will be used to illustrate his points. Hyundai is sponsoring the program.
NBC announced the addition of several new interactive features around The Office, 30 Rock and Heroes on NBC.com, implemented from suggestions given by users. “The Office Quotes Game” was inspired by message board users who were challenging each other to identify who said specific lines. “Marry, Boff or Kill” is a game 30 Rock characters play on the show, naming three celebrities they’d like to do just that to. The Heroes tie in has former Mossad operative Hana enlisting fans to help her thwart Linderman’s plot. Gameplay will pay off in the April 23rd episode when the on-air storyline converges with the one developed online.
ESPN retooled audio site ESPNRadio.com to include a new “Super-Stream” player that delivers live 24/7 streaming of the national ESPN radio feed as well as local feeds from ESPN-owned stations in New York, Chicago, L.A., Dallas and Pittsburg. New content includes live video from Mike & Mike in the Morning and The Herd with Colin Cowherd. The site will also include enhanced advertising opportunities and more interactive features for users.
ESPN acquired Jayski.com, a top NASCAR information site built by Jay Adamczyk, who will continue to operate the site. Separately, Bill “The Sports Guy” Simmons renewed his agreement with ESPN to continue to write features for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine and consult on original shows and projects for ESPN Original Entertainment.
MTV Networks, Harmonix (developer of hit game “Guitar Hero”) and Electronic Arts have developed a new interactive music game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that allows gamers to play music with friends online. The companies have cleared the rights with a number of large music labels to allow fans to choose from a wide selection of popular rock songs. Visit www.rockbandgame.com for more info.
uVuMobile signed a deal with Westwood One Radio to launch mobile audio broadcasts of Notre Dame football games. The games will launch this fall with a series of interactive features including a social networking chat feature that allows listeners to post comments and interact directly with the host.
Showcase.ca, the website for Canadian cable network Showcase, is steaming the season 7 premiere of Trailer Park Boys a week in advance of Sunday night’s broadcast premier.
Correction : Several folks wrote in yesterday to point out that Lew Wasserman, the subject of yesterday’s story about Wassmerman Media Group’s attempt to create SportNet, had died in 2002. Indeed the legendary Hollywood agent and former owner of Universal Studios passed away June 3, 2002. It is his grandson Casey Wasserman who started WMG in 1998 and is angling for extreme sports rights. Casey also acts as President and CEO of the charity The Wasserman Foundation, founded by his granddad and grandmother in 1952. My apologies, and may the spirit of Lew live on.
Warner Bros. Entertainment has created four teams of people within its digital media department under “digital watchdog” Darcy Antonellis to study piracy across the company, according to a story in The New York Times. The teams review deals Warner is working on, lobby legislators and shift emphasis to focus on regions such as China and Russia where piracy is most egregious. Ms. Antonellis says the next three months will be critical for Hollywood as studios move to make more of their content available online.
The Pan American Games passed a new rule outlawing blogging by athletes, doctors or coaches during the competition starting in July, seeking to protect the exclusivity of the event. The International Olympic Committee posed a similar ban during the Winter Olympics in Turin last year. Who’s next to ban the blog-Major League Baseball? On the subject of the Boston Red Sox, Senator John Kerry may now have another option to catch the Sox games. Verizon Communications acquired rights to broadcast the HD version of New England Sport Network to FiOS TV subscribers for no additional charge. FiOS currently has more than 270,000 subscribers in 40 Massachusetts communities. NESN is jointly owned by the Red Sox and Boston Bruins.
Finally MLB‘s negotiations with In Demand and Echostar over its out-of-market package of games have gone into extra innings. The deadline had originally been set for last Saturday, but was extended through the opening of the season on Sunday, as both sides continue to try and work out a deal. In the meantime, cable and Dish customers can sign up for a 5-day risk free trial on www.mlb.com to watch out of market games online, sponsored by Right Guard. The MLB.TV package costs $14.95 a month/$89.95 a season for the standard streaming video service and $19.95 a month/$119.95 a season for the premium service, which boasts a multi-screen “mosaic” feature and 700k picture quality.
Broadband video ad network YuMe Networks is powering its first ad campaign with Eidos‘ newest Lara Croft Tomb Raider game that enables dynamic, targeted insertion of video ads within downloadable video content for viewing on computers, mobile and other digital platforms. The campaign will be featured on select videos from cable network G4 and distributed on BitTorrent’s Entertainment Network. YuMe’s technology measures “view-throughs” rather than “click-throughs” to report on whether or not the ads were actually viewed, a metric online advertisers have been waiting for. It will also enable more targeted placement of ads, as well as frequent changes in the creative content to optimize campaigns.
TV Guide Channel hired former VP of Research for CBS Television Distribution Megan Costello as Vice President of Research. She will oversee all of the channel’s research initiatives including ratings analysis and viewer testing for original programming. Megan will report to Doug Yates, SVP of Marketing for TV Guide Channel.
Publicis futures consultancy Denuo promoted Dan Buczaczer to Senior Vice President. He will continue to manage Denuo’s word of mouth marketing initiatives and report to Chief Innovation Officer of Publicis Group Media, Rishad Tobaccowala.
Access 360 Media named Taylor Bayouth Director of Interactive Media. Taylor, who founded social networking sites ShoutPost.com and tBlog.com, will mange creation and implementation of all interactive and mobile initiatives.
TV addicts may find some comfort food at www.tvovereasy.com , a daily online video blog from host Jenny Slater. Instead of being snarky, Jenny reacts more from an instinctual level. She is a dedicated TV fanatic who delves into all the gossipy details from her 50 favorite shows. Her tastes are eclectic and her pop cultural knowledge is pretty impressive-I don’t know how she keeps all the character’s names straight. By the way, Jenny likes to talk!
