Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
04.30.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 30, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, a new, regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. First up is Diana Mogollon, General Manager, mun2.
When was the first time you were in a leadership role?
I’ve been in a leadership role my whole life, from Student Body President in junior high to Junior Class President… it’s in my blood! Then came leading the team at Galan Entertainment alongside Nely Galan and then at Telemundo, driving the West Coast Strategic and Marketing team. But nothing beats the best-in-class team at mun2 that I have the pleasure of collaborating with every single day.
What were some early leadership lessons for you?
-It’s all about your team and leveraging the key dynamics to maximize their collective and individual potential. Leading and managing is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.
-Any great leader must learn to say less and listen more in order to be as effective and compassionate as possible.
– I have also learned that the key ingredients to leading effectively are a clearly articulated vision, determined team, and persistence beyond belief, with a winning spirit. Even the impossible is possible with all of these.
-Finally, winners never quit and quitters never win.
What are some of the things you look for when interviewing people?
– That they have a strong personal brand: what makes them unique? How do they add value to the team and organization? How do they approach problem-solving and consensus-building across organizations?
-How passionate are they about the business and their respective area of focus?
How do I nail the “Do you have any questions for me?” question in an interview?
For those of us who are… well, less than great at interviewing, here are a few ideas for how to answer the inevitable, “So, what questions do you have?” from a potential new boss. Perhaps the best one is “how can I make you look good?” With this one simple question, you communicate to the hiring manager that you are a team player and that you would have her back. Who wouldn’t want someone who understands that his/her job performance is directly tied to the boss’s performance and, as an effective team, everyone looks good?
I know that employers look at social media as part of the vetting process for candidates. What should I be doing – or not doing?
A word to the wise-ignorance is not bliss. Google your name to see what potential employers may find. After you get the results, be sure to set up a Google Alert. The Alert will notify you whenever the keywords you choose (i.e., your name) are found on the web.
Once this is complete, review all of your social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest) to make sure your personal profile is appropriate. Does the information cast you in a positive light to someone who doesn’t know you and is considering you for a job? In a social media world, this is your first impression.
For instance, if your goal is to work at the YES Network, don’t have the ESPN logo on your Facebook page with a line through it. Also, make certain what you post is truthful – don’t say you got an advanced degree when you didn’t because you think it makes you look better… it would be too easy for someone to uncover the truth.
On the positive side, places like Pinterest can be a great vehicle for demonstrating your creativity. If you want to be the social media manager for a snowboard company, for example, pinning great snowboarding photos with pithy sayings that are getting re-pinned is a great way to show your capability.
