Al Jazeera is looking to its future, and children’s programming is a key cornerstone. The company is unleashing a multi-age, multimedia strategy under the Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC) umbrella with a lofty goal–to become the preferred children’s media provider in every Arab home. JCC’s Saad Al Hudaifi is heading the effort, adding deputy executive GM stripes to his current responsibilities as acting director of JCC channels. Among the cogs in the JCC programming wheel: JeemTV, a trans-media platform for Arab children ages 7- 12; preschool network Baraem TV; and VOD educational portal Taalam.tv. First up is JeemTV, which just launched with a raft of original content including a family block–and acquisitions like Disney Channel’s Kim Possible and Emperor’s New School, and BBC’s Andy’s Wild Adventure; a robust web site (jeemtv.net), and initiative to migrate its library over to hi-def. JeemTV also formed a committee of experts in the Arab world to assess its content offerings going forward.
Toys R Us is yanking its initial public offering from the shelf. Continued soft sales both in the U.S. and abroad forced the retailer to withdraw its IPO last Friday, the same day the big box toy merchant released Q4 2012 financial results with net sales down 3% $5.8 billion from the prior-year period. For the full year, net sales were $3.5 billion, a 2.1% dip vs. 2011. Last month, Gerald Storch announced he would step down as the company’s CEO but remain as chairman of the board. Toys R Us originally filed plans for an IPO in May 2010 with the Securities and Exchange Commission; it postponed the IPO in 2011 due to weak market conditions.
Starz Kids & Family will be the U.S. home for Bindi Irwin’s live-action series Bindi’s Bootcamp, a wildlife-themed game show (and when there’s an Irwin involved you can be sure there’s an emphasis on wild) where three teams of children compete around the Australia Zoo, on jungle safaris and savannah locations to win a spot with the Irwin family on a conservation program. Bindi’s Bootcamp is produced by FremantleMedia Australia and Sticky Pictures, and premieres May 1 on Starz. The series debuted last July on Network ABC3 in Australia and airs in 15 territories across Asia on Discovery Kids.
That’s ABC Family, emphasis on the Family. The network is planning a family movie weekend marathon April 27-28, including the network TV premiere of Yogi Bear and ABC Fam’s premiere of Because of Winn-Dixie. Also on the schedule is Peter Pan, Gnomeo & Juliet and The Lion King.
The time is right for dancing in the street. Princess Productions is now filming in the U.K. with Jordan and Perri of dance troupe Diversity for their new half-hour Nickelodeon and Sky 1 series, Jordan & Perri’s Ultimate Block Party. The duo will do what they do best–teach a pre-selected group of kids street dance routines, while throwing in a few surprise dance parties along the way.
More MIP: Spain’s BRB Internacional will be shopping new half-hour animated series Filly, based on the Dracco toy and licensing brand that’s particularly popular in Germany. Filly collectable figurines have sold 60 million-plus worldwide; BRB has distribution rights outside the Filly series worldwide, except in Germany, and manages brand rights in Spain and Portugal… Toei Animation is headed to Cannes with new seasons of the properties Saint Seiya U and Driland.

Get ready for another Threadless fan-art contest. Cartoon Network Enterprises is teaming with the global digital design community (threadless.com) on a T-shirt design challenge for Cartoon’s Regular Show. Fans of the J.G. Quintel-created series can submit original designs online to be voted on by the 2.4 million-strong Threadless global community through April 29. The winning efforts will be printed as graphic T-shirts and sold exclusively on the Threadless site. Cartoon and Threadless previously teamed in 2011 for a similar Adventure Time challenge. The Regular Show winning designer gets $2,500 cash, a $500 Threadless gift certificate, and a Cartoon Network prize pack stuffed with Regular Show goodies.
Domo is expanding his domain again. On the heels of opening shop in New York’s YRB, Big Tent Entertainment signed a series of new licensing deals: Franco Manufacturing and PlayAction will launch novelties, products for the home, bed and bath; Kellytoy USA will produce a variety of amusement park prizes including plush, key chains and inflatables; and Magnote will launch a collection of cube figures, novelty puzzles and craft kits.
Good Works
For the sixth year in a row, construction toy company K’NEX Brands will donate a percentage of online sales to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). During the month of April, 10% of all online sales (www.knex.com) will be donated to CCFA, and donations are also accepted without making a purchase. Additionally, a team of K’NEX employees will participate in the Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis walk in Philadelphia this spring.
The NFL Players Assn. has joined the National Park Trust to promote this year’s National Kids to Parks Day, a movement to mobilize children to get outdoors and support the country’s parks that’s slated for Saturday, May 18. The two organizations hope to double last year’s participation, which included 250 events participated in by more than 108,000 families, support from 260 mayors in 45 states and Washington D.C. Other 2013 collaborators include the American Academy of Pediatrics, Boy Scouts of America, National Education Assn. and National Geographic Kids.

Former Walt Disney Co. CFO Richard Nanula is stepping in as chairman of LodgeNet Interactive, the hotel entertainment distributor that’s been purchased by Colony Capital two months after filing for Chapter 11 protection from bankruptcy.
