Starting fall 2009, NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution is offering Law & Order: SVU for weekday runs in national syndication. The crime drama was picked up Fox Television Stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Houston, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Orlando and Baltimore. The series will air in a further 18 out of the top 20 markets on stations from broadcast groups CBS, Sinclair, Sunbeam, Belo, Hearst, Granite, Capitol, Local TV among others. Spike TV gets into the comedy genre as the network premieres its first original improvised comedy series Factory on June 29 at 10p. Factory is about four bored factory workers in small-town America who spend their free time partying and hanging out. The Next Food Network Star, from CBS EYE too Productions, returns on the Food Network for a fourth season June 1 at 10p. Chef Bobby Flay joins as one of the permanent selection committee members and the ten finalists will be offered tips from a list of celebrity foodies such as Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray, Paula Deen and more. The ultimate winner will be announced during the season finale on July 27 at 10p and will be granted a 6-episode show beginning this August. Have you heard of the “new TV series” from director David Nutter called Scarlet? Have you tried to figure out who is carrying the new series and when? And all you’ve been able to find out is the website ScarletSeries.tv, right? Well, the secret behind Scarlet has been revealed. It’s not a “new TV series” the way you think – it’s a new model series of super-slim flat screen TVs from LG Electronics. While the campaign did ignite some online chatter as people tried to find out what Scarlet was all about, it did not seem to truly hit that high-buzz fever pitch level. Gutsy move. Season five of Reno 911! on Comedy Central opens with all-new episodes May 22 at 1030p. Petry Media lost two of its TV station group clients as Fisher Communications will move its TV station business to Katz Media Group starting immediately. Rumors suggest Gannett may also leave and head to TeleRep, according to TVNewsday. Katz picked up two other Petry clients earlier this year, Nexstar Broadcasting and the Dispatch Broadcast Group. UPFRONT UPDATE: A&E Network Boosting its image across all platforms, A&E will introduce new branding that includes a fresh logo and look both on-air and online centered on the tagline “Real Life. Drama.” The re-branding campaign, utilizing national and local television commercials, online, print and out-of-home in key markets, kicks off this Memorial Day during the miniseries premiere of The Andromeda Strain and then will continue throughout the summer, coinciding with the network’s debut of its first scripted series, The Cleaner starring Benjamin Bratt. Development: A&E will infuse more dollars in original dramas with the aim of rolling out two scripted series each year. Joining the schedule in early 2009 will be one of these two completed pilots: The Beast with Patrick Swayze or Danny Fricke starring Connie Nielsen. Three new real-life series will join A&E’s schedule in 2008:
A&E also brings back eight series to its lineup this year including Intervention, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, Paranormal State, Criss Angel Mindfreak, Crime 360, The First 48, The Two Coreys and Parking Wars. UPFRONT UPDATE: History Last night, History brought out a slate of seven new series in production, all focused on a different historical angle:
Over 2008-2009, History will introduce a number of specials including the previously unveiled Expedition: Stanley and Livingstone from Mark Burnett Productions in 2009; and the two-hour look at The Brain premiering in fourth quarter 2008. The CW’s Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off announced two casting additions: Shenae Grimes landed one of the lead female roles playing the teenage daughter Annie Mills and TV sitcom veteran Lori Loughlin will portray her mother Celia Mills. For the 15th and final season of NBC’s ER, THR reports producers have added Angela Bassett as a regular cast member and one of the original cast members Noah Wyle will return for at least four of the 19 schedule episodes. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The WB is back in beta from early May as a web and on demand entity and this time the Warner Bros. Television Group hopes to create even stronger connections with its target audience by utilizing the interactive capabilities of the medium. Right out of the gate ad supported TheWB.com will offer users more flexibility and customization that other studio-backed ventures, including online editing tools that allow users to clip their favorite scenes from full episodes to create mash ups. Distribution partners include Comcast, Fancast.com, AOL and Facebook. An application is in the works for the latter that will enable users to log on and view complete episodes of WB shows such as Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Smallville and Friends without ever leaving their profiles.
