Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Under pressure from Apple and Google, Research In Motion unveiled a new mobile operating system due out in Sept., two new BlackBerry models and a new technology that allows users to make free Wi-Fi-based voice calls that will not count toward their minutes. The BlackBerry Pearl 3G, to be offered by multiple carriers next month, supports 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS and ships with a 3.2 megapixel camera w/ a flash. The BlackBerry Bold 9650, due out on May 23, sports a 2.4-inch display, an optical trackpad and is expandable to accommodate up to 32 GB of memory. Initially aligned to work with Cisco Unified Communications Manager Software, the Wi-Fi voice offering is geared toward business users enabling them use a single number for both their desk landline and mobile accounts. Meanwhile, Google announced it no longer plans to make the pricey Nexus One smartphone compatible with Verizon Wireless, the largest carrier in the U.S.

NBC and FremantleMedia North America are turning to YouTube to help audition new performers for America’s Got Talent. Producers will select 40 postings to be featured on the site and two acts will be chosen to perform live on a special YouTube-powered edition of the show on NBC this summer – 11 acts will be picked by the judges and 1 will be selected from user votes. Official voting begins June 28.
 
NFL.com‘s draft coverage set records as users checked in a total of 12.5 million times (up 61% from last year). Users also watched 40% more video; a total of 1.1 million fans watched the draft live on NFL.com ­- 89% more than last year.
 
NHL.com says it set single day records for unique visitors and video starts on Sunday as fans came to watch highlights of two overtime playoff games.
 
MGM announced it is introducing a Spanish language version of its MGM HD channel in Latin America this month, with launches scheduled initially in Argentina and Mexico across Cablevision Argentina, Cablevision Mexico, and Sky Mexico.

Online video monetization platform FreeWheel closed on a $16.8 million round of funding led by Walt Disney’s Steamboat Ventures with existing investors Turner Broadcasting System, Battery Ventures and Foundation Capital also participating. The company also announced new agreements with both Discovery and ESPN Internet Ventures to help the publishers manage and monetize video digital video content.
 
NATPE announced it is streaming its “Creating a Digital Start Up in the 21st Century” event for free, live with FM78.tv’s Peter Murrieta and Justine Bateman on April 28 to help promote its LATV fest. Go to latvfest.net or stickam.com/natpe to view it at 7 p.m. on Wed.

launched a new vertical ad network yesterday geared toward car, truck, motorcycle and racing fans. The Digital Throttle ad network, made up of blogs and premium sites such as DragTimes.com, IHRA.com, DragList.com, DragStuff.com, and SpeedwayMedia.com, is contoured toward advertisers such as car parts dealers and customization specialists.
 
Teens visiting Sulake’s virtual world site Habbo Hotel are more willing to “friend” a brand than adults are on Facebook, according to a 5,300 user survey conducted by Habbo which was cross-references Razorfish’s annual FEED study:
·      72% of teens said they’re willing to friend a brand in Habbo Hotel vs. 40% of adults on Facebook
·      92% of teens expressed interest in brand activities or contests on the site vs. 70% of adults on Facebook and MySpace with 40% of Habbo users saying they already have

The Senate Commerce Committee’s Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for April 29 to discuss the issue of kids online privacy. The hearing will look at updating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act in the era of Facebook and new digital platforms.
 
Independent film, TV, music, fashion and sports content management firm Fintage House struck a strategic partnership with online film licensing platform mediapeers to expand the user base of mediapeers’ B2B online market. The two will also collaborate to offer new web-based services to buyers and sellers. Mediapeers offers marketing, screening, licensing and content delivery services whereas Fintage House specializes in revenue collection and reporting – working on the sales of such films as The Hurt Locker, District 9 and Paranormal Activity.

More than one-fifth of the connections to Akamai were made at speeds greater than 5 Mbps, according the CDN’s latest State of the Internet whitepaper – a gain of over 6% from the prior quarter. South Korea remained the world leader with 68% of its internet customers and 23% of its population enjoying connection speeds of 5Mbps or higher. The U.S. ranked 14th in high broadband connectivity (25%) and 9th in high broadband penetration (.10 per capita).

Online video viewing in the UK increased by 37% during the past year as TV catch-up services caught on and viewing videos on social networking sites increased, according to ComScore. Google Sites grew by 17% vs. a year ago with 2.5 billion videos viewed in Feb. 2010. BBC Sites ranked second with 140 million videos viewed. Facebook ranked as the fastest growing video property in the top 10, surging 205% in the past year to 43 million videos viewed, followed by video search engine Blinkx, growing 204% to nearly 29 million videos viewed. Channel 4’s younger audiences consumed the highest number of videos per viewer (18.8 in Feb.), compared to 15.7 for BBC Sites and 13.5 for iTV.

Barnes & Noble is releasing a software update to its Nook e-reader this week to allow users to surf the web and play games including Chess and Sudoku. The Wi-Fi-powered Nook software supports color and is based on Google’s Android OS. Manufacturers jealously guard e-reader sales but Taipei-based Digitimes Research estimates that the Nook outsold Amazon’s Kindle in March in the U.S. Global e-book reader shipments totaled 1.43 million units in the first quarter of 2010, and will grow to 2.02 million units in the second quarter, according to Digitimes.
 
Google introduced a new Google Maps feature dubbed Earth view that provides Google Earth-powered 3D images to any web browser. The new feature, viewable with the addition of The Google Earth plugin, enables you to see Earth views, 3D buildings, mountains and other terrain features with full smooth panning and zooming.
 
Emerging hunting, fishing and shooting cable channel Sportsman Channel, currently available on Dish Network, has launched an iPhone app. The free application features video clips, programming info and email/Twitter integration.

Former Publisher of celebrity magazine OK! Lori Burgess has been named publisher of The Hollywood Reporter, new THR owner e5 Global Media announced. She replaces Eric Mika, who was let go last month amid reports that THR plans to abandon its trade format to become more of a showbiz news aggregator.

As the debate rages on about whether or not Facebook has overreached with the launch of its “Open Graph,” we’re-going-to-do-as-we-please-with-your-data architecture, a new content mining site dubbed Likebutton.me has launched to aggregate links shared by your Facebook friends. The latest postings from 75+ publishers such as YouTube, CNN, Break, The NYTimes, Hulu and Yelp are listed with a thumbnail of the friend who posted it. It simply mines the activity feed Social Plugins for each site; postings are sortable by category including video, news, tech, info, entertainment, movies and reviews. The site is worth checking out because it gives you an idea of what kind of data can be extrapolated from these tools and how it can be aggregated. Meanwhile, Facebook product manager Austin Haugen has written a detailed blog post explaining exactly how the new Social Plugins work, including guidance on the utterly confusing process of managing your Facebook Privacy settings. As the with Facebook’s ultimately doomed Beacon program, much the debate around these instant personalization features revolves around the fact that the sites default settings allow free and loose sharing and how difficult it is to opt out.
