Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 25, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Addressing the National Association of Broadcasters yesterday at their annual conference, Jack Valenti, former head of the Motion Picture Association of America, announced a consortium of entertainment companies and groups will launch a $300 million initiative in June that aims to educate parents of their power to control what their own kids watch on TV.  The mission is to prove a unified voluntary industry effort can work in reaching parents through on-air messaging as well as providing information to be distributed via local organizations including churches and other groups.  The move is considered to be a step to ward-off government intervention in programming content.  The collected broadcast, cable and satellite TV companies plan to work with the Ad Council (a non-profit group) to help present its messaging, as well as the Consumer Electronics Association in educating parents/adults about the V-chip and other ways of blocking programming they find inappropriate for their own families.

Viacom Inc. will acquire Xfire, Inc., an online gaming technology and community platform, for $102 million in cash.  Xfire will be housed under the MTV Networks banner, where Viacom expects to maximize Xfire’s advertising revenues through aggressive marketing, global reach and integration with MTVN’s other digital and cable related outlets.  MTVN’s other digital properties include Neopets, Parents Connect, GoCityKids.com, iFilm and GameTrailers.com and a range of broadband networks.  Targeted to teens and young adults, the two-year old Xfire has 4 million registered users across 100 countries; with 1 million active users averaging 91 hours each month in sessions that run approximately three hours.

AOL has launched KOL Jr., a website specifically created for K2-5 (www.koljunior.com). KOL Jr., features original cartoons, games, music, bedtime stories and interactive activities designed to help parents introduce young kids to the internet as well as providing another way for kids and parents to spend time together.  The first cartoon on the new site is Pilar’s Adventures, which will debut with ten 5-min episodes, Pilar is a young horse with a vivid imagination and her interaction with her barnyard friends.  AOL already serves K7-12 with its KOL service and teens with AOL Red.

As The WB changes its hat and becomes The CW network this fall, Saturday morning programming targeted to K6-11 will remain a constant with the Kids WB!.  Beginning September 2006 the Kids WB five-hour (7a-12p) Saturday morning block will be titled Too Big For Your TV.  The 2006-2007 line-up will include Warner Bros. Animation’s new series Legion of Super Heroes based on the DC Comics’ characters, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get A Clue!, and Tom and Jerry Tales.  Returning series include The Batman, Loonatics Unleashed, Xiaolin Showdown, and Johnny Test (produced this season by Cookie Jar Entertainment).  Too Big For Your TV will also feature the US premiere of Monster Allergy based on the comic book of the same name and produced for TV by Rainbow S.p.A.  Two additional series (TBA) will be included within Pillow Head Hour, which will lead-off Saturday mornings.

The 2006-2007 Kids’ WB! Too Big For Your TV line-up:
7:00-8a: Pillow Head Hour (E/I compliant)
8-8:30a: Tom and Jerry Tales
8:30-9a: Monster Allergy
9-9:30a: Xiaolin Showdown
9:30a:    Loonatics Unleashed
10a:       Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue!
10:30a:  Johnny Test
11a:       Legion of Super Heroes
11:30a:  The Batman

G4 launches a complete creative and technical redesign of its website, g4tv.com, this week.  The new website adds a range of new elements including flash animation, podcasts, and The Pile, a new broadband channel.  The Pile is ad-sales supported and features streaming video highlights and web-only content. Under the banner title are separate feeds, including:

  • The Feed, a spin-off from the network’s Attack of the Show, it will feature daily highlights, and is also used as a news ticker shown on each page of the site and can be downloaded as a podcast;
  • The Daily Nut will highlight the best information from the web that is of interest to G4 viewers, also available as a podcast;
  • Interact is where the G4 interactive programming is located.

The Pile will also support G4’s affiliate marketing effort, Games Go Better with Broadband, which aims to help increase sales of high speed internet product.

The nominees for the 2006 MTV Movie Awards have been announced and simultaneously the network has invited viewers to vote for winners in all categories.  Filmed on June 3 at Sony Pictures Studios in California, the 2006 MTV Movie Awards will debut on MTV Thursday, June 8 at 9p.  Leading the way this year are the 40-Year Old Virgin and Wedding Crashers with five nominations each, followed by three nods a piece for Batman Begins, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Star Wars: Episode III  Revenge Of The Sith, Hustle & Flow and Sin City. Among the new awards being introduced this year are Best Hero and the mtvU Student Filmmaker Award. Viewers can vote on the internet, by text messaging or by calling.  All the information you’ll need to vote can be found at www.movieawards.mtv.com.

The newly established 4sight licensing solutions, inc., has signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with Microsoft Corp. to manage the worldwide licensing initiatives for its Xbox brand.  Under the deal, 4sight will handle all merchandise licensing with Microsoft’s Franchise Development team.  4sight is a subsidiary of 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., which recently teamed with Microsoft for the upcoming new game and TV series Viva Piñata.

For those planning a visit to Disney theme parks, Disneyland US, Paris, Hong Kong, Disney World, or aboard the Disney Cruise line tomorrow, Wednesday, April 26, you’ll get a look at Disney’s new interactive TV series, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  Each park will feature a screening of the first full episode of the series, in local languages, as well as appearances by Mickey and his friends.  The new series will get a sneak peek on Disney Channel, Friday, May 5 at 7:30p.  The following day, May 6, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will premiere simultaneously on Playhouse Disney channels and Disney Channels around the world.

Sesame Workshop, the National Governors Association and PBS Kids have partnered in an initiative to promote health and nutrition amongst kids, with fifteen US governors taping public service announcements with Sesame Street’s Elmo and Rosita.  The PSAs will include a range of messages including the importance of health and nutrition, personal hygiene and getting physically active.  The PSAs will be distributed to PBS stations, as well as cable and broadcast outlets.  This PSA campaign is part of Sesame Workshop’s multi-year Healthy Habits for life initiative.

DIC Entertainment has established a new in-house advertising sales division that will oversee broadcast and new media initiatives for the launch of CBS’s Saturday Morning Secret Slumber Party, the new kid’s programming block set to premiere September 16, 2006.  The new team includes the appointments of both Karl Kuechenmeister and Eric Greenwald as SVP/Advertising Sales & Marketing, to be based in NY and Burbank respectively.  Both will report to DIC’s Chairman/CEO, Andy Heyward, and President, Brad Brooks.

  • Karl Kuechenmeister will oversee the national broadcast strategy for the block.  A 30 year industry veteran, he previously served as SVP/Cartoon Network, Time Warner-Turner Broadcasting, SVP/One World Entertainment, Viacom-MTVN, SVP/Media Sales TV Distribution, Warner Bros. among others.
  • Eric Greenwald will be the lead ad-sales executive responsible for online and new media activities, as well as overseeing the operating budget.  He will be involved in branding, marketing and promotions for the online and new media initiatives.  Previously, Greenwald was VP/Immersive Advertising & Business Development, Neopets Inc.
  • David Danowski has been named VP/Advertising Sales & Marketing, reporting to Kuechenmeister.  He will manage the national ad sales efforts for the programming block.  Prior to this, Danowski served as an Account Executive at Disney-ABC Kids Networks.
