What is a career coach and how do I find one?

Sometimes an outside perspective can be key to prepping for the job search process  or jump-starting a stalled one  to help you maintain a clear direction; that’s the kind of help a career coach provides. The International Coach Federation is the number one trade organization for career coaches and governs industry standards. You can search by geography to find someone in your area. Be sure and ask for references and check them. Also, see if the counselor is willing to do a free phone trial of 30-60 minutes before you commit. This will allow you to determine whether the chemistry between you and the counselor is right.

Beyond researching a company, how do I make sure I look informed at an interview about the world in general?

Knowledge of national news and politics is important when going through the job-search process and meeting new people. AllTop is a site that allows you to stay abreast of current news and topics of interest, including headline stories from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and CNN. It’s customizable for your life, professional focus, and leisure interests. Try signing up, reading and sharing select articles with others. Posting articles for employed people in your network, if done selectively, can be an effective way of demonstrating that you are knowledgeable and helpful. Pulse is a similar resource for mobile devices (iPhones or Android).

Also, be sure to conduct a Google search the day of an interview.  If XYZ company is in the news that day because they just launched a new product or a company video of theirs went viral, you have a great conversation starter for the interview.

Univision Communications, Inc. has named Gustavo Ordonez Senior Vice President of Programming Research. Ordonez will make programming and content recommendations for all of the network’s platforms and work across Univision to help drive new business by providing insights on ratings trends. Ordonez comes to Univision from A&E Ole Networks Latin America, where he served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Research.

Chris Deaux has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Intuitive Entertainment, producers of Millionaire Matchmaker and LA Shrinks.

Tom Barreca has joined NPN Media as Senior Vice President of Distribution. NPN Media specializes in the creation of high-quality broadcast, digital and mobile short and long form content, including the news feature service SweepsFeed.  Barreca previously served as Managing Director, New Business Development at NASCAR Media Group.
Tina Silvestri has been appointed Senior Vice President, Operations and Technical Services at NBCUniversal. She previously served as Senior Vice President of Operations for the NBC Owned Television Stations. In her new role Silvestri will lead combined business service functions, including crisis management and business continuity, transportation and retail operations, and provide global oversight for the company’s facilities.

Michael Rubin, vice president of long form for MSNBC, will now lead the long form programming group at The Weather Channel. Rubin will be responsible for all aspects of long form programming, including development and scheduling. He will continue his role at MSNBC, an example of Weather’s ongoing partnership with NBCUniversal, one of its three owners.

Indigo Films is expanding its television production business with a new office in Los Angeles. Joining its LA team is two-time Emmy award-winning producer Glenn Kirshbaum. Kirshbaum will be show runner for a new Travel Channel series. Kirshbaum previously served as a writer, producer, director and show runner for Unsolved Mysteries and Haunted Histories, as well as VP of creative affairs at MPH Entertainment.

Much & House Public Relations has hired publicist Bryan deCastro. He brings Betsy Brandt, Joelle Carter and Dot Marie Jones to the Much & House roster.

In its first executive appointment as part of the new CBS Corporation and Lionsgate partnership, TVGN has named Brad Schwartz President of Entertainment and Media. Schwartz, formerly Senior Vice President of Programming and Operations for Fuse at MSG Media, will oversee programming, scheduling, marketing and creative operations for the channel. He previously served as General Manager of a suite of eight music and pop culture cable networks in Canada, part of Bell Media’s CTV, including MTV Canada, MuchMusic, MTV2 and MuchMore. Prior to that, Schwartz was Director of Global Marketing Partnerships at MTV, and he began his career working for Lorne Michaels at Saturday Night Live.

TVGN has also announced that Dennis Miller, former interim President of TVGN, has been named President of Operations. In this new role, Miller will continue to manage affiliate sales, finance and operational strategy, working closely with Schwartz in Advertising Sales.

Sarah Shannon has been promoted to Vice President, Programming and Network Operations for FEARnet. Shannon, who previously served as Director of Programming, will continue to create and curate programming schedules and handle acquisitions for all films, series and original programming for the linear cable TV network and video on demand channel and supervise the company’s broadcast operations, as well as the standards and practices and traffic departments.

Steve Agase has been appointed Senior Vice President of Music and Entertainment Ad Sales, West Coast, at Viacom. In his new position, Agase will oversee West Coast ad sales for networks including CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Logo, Spike TV, TV Land and VH1 and be responsible for growing Viacom Media Networks’ partnerships with West Coast agencies and advertisers. Agase last served as Senior Vice President of West Coast Sales for NBCU.

Edward Pound has joined Al Jazeera America to head its 16-member investigative unit. Pound, who has worked as an investigative reporter for The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, last served as director of communications at the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, which has been overseeing spending of stimulus money. Al Jazeera America is slated to launch later this year.

It’s been reported that Michael Bass, co-executive producer of Katie, is joining CNN as Senior Vice President. The move reunites Bass with CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker. Bass once served as Zucker’s top deputy on NBC’s Today.

Marjorie Cohn, President of Content Development at Nickelodeon, is leaving the company. Cohn had been with the network for 24 years and has been responsible for a number of its hit shows, including iCarly and Victorious. No reason has been given for her departure.

BBC has hired James Harding as Director, BBC News and Current Affairs. Harding, who will be in charge of the news organization, previously worked at News Corp.’s The Times where he was editor from 2007 to 2012 . He places Helen Boaden, who has become director of BBC Radio.

Univision Communications Inc. has named Michael McAlone as Vice President of Network Sales for the Southwest region. McAlone rejoins Univision from Telemundo’s KTMD-TV in Houston, where he was Vice President of Television Sales. He previously served as senior account executive for Univision in the Southwest region in 2011.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has hired Marc Wade for the newly-created position of Executive Producer, Digital. Wade will be responsible for the production of the Academy’s digital experiences, including the Television Academy website and related apps. Prior to joining the Television Academy, Wade spent four years as Director of Destination Web Sites for Disney Interactive.

Continental Television Sales, a division of the Katz Television Group, has promoted Tricia Donovan to Sales Manager of the Dallas Stars Team. Donovan joined Katz TV Group as a sales assistant in the Seattle office in 1997. She moved to the Dallas office in 1999 as a Sales Associate and was promoted to Account Executive on the Stars Team for Continental Television Sales.

SET, a pioneer in large-scale graphics and experience design, has appointed renowned fashion industry creative Kirsten Ludwig as its first Chief Creative Officer. Ludwig will help lead SET’s growth in New York and further build out the agency’s creative services offering.

ShareBuilders, Inc. has promoted Erin Koller to Chief Executive Officer. Koller, previously Vice President of Operations, will oversee the development of ShareBuilders’ software, as well as manage employees and financials. She will also continue to consult with TV and radio stations to help them manage inventory and budget revenue. Linda Locke, outgoing Chief Executive Officer, will take on the title of President of the Board and continue as a senior consultant for the company. In addition, Don Locke, outgoing Chief Operating Officer, will be renamed a board member and continue as a senior consultant.

A&E Networks UK has appointed Caroline Casey to the newly created role of Director of Digital Media. Casey is responsible for the management of all digital assets and associated brands of A&E Networks UK across the UK, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Sub Saharan Africa. Prior to joining A&E Networks UK, Casey was Founder and CEO of strategic consultancy company CC Digital Ltd.

Entertainment publicist Steve Belgard, who spent the last 13 years at Starz Entertainment in Denver, has been named Vice President of Andrew E. Freedman Public Relations. He will handle accounts in film, television, music and publishing as well as corporate entities.

AMC/Sundance Channel Global, the international division of AMC Networks, has announced three new appointments. Courtney Williams has been name to the newly created position of Managing Director of Business Development and Strategy, Asia Pacific, AMC/Sundance Channel Global. Donovan Castillo-Mohlman has been appointed Head of Programming and Scheduling, Asia Pacific, and Lorraine Ou has been named Marketing Manager, Asia Pacific, AMC/Sundance Channel Global.

Eryk Casemiro has been appointed Chief Creative Officer, Kids for Marathon Media, a Zodiak Media company. He will manage creative aspects of all current kid productions and lead a team of executive producers, as well as oversee development and production opportunities for new content for children and families across all media platforms. Casemiro previously served as Senior Vice President of Creative Affairs at Klasky Csupo.

Brian Schwagerl has been named Senior Vice President Facilities Operations, Planning and Services at NBCUniversal. In this newly created position, Schwagerl will lead and oversee all aspects of facilities operations, service and project management for the company’s office, studio and technical space in the New York metro region. Schwagerl previously served as Vice President, Workplace Strategy & Services, Real Estate and Facilities Planning for Hearst Corporation.

Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel that will launch later this year, has hired Andrea Stone and Tony Karon as Senior Online Executive Producers for Al Jazeera’s digital team. Stone and Karon will be responsible for managing both U.S. and global coverage for the channel’s website and other digital platforms and determine the overall editorial direction for the site. Stone last served as Senior National Correspondent for The Huffington Post. Karon was previously Senior Editor for Time magazine’s website.

TV5MONDE USA, America’s only 24/7 French language entertainment channel, has appointed Laura Strauss as Director of Affiliate Sales and Marketing, effective immediately. Strauss will handle distribution of TV5MONDE USA and Tivi5MONDE kid’s channel and spearhead acquisition, upgrade, and retention marketing in partnership with TV5MONDE USA’s current distribution partners. Strauss previously worked at TV5MONDE USA from 2008 to 2010 as Marketing Manager. She last served as Account Executive, Distribution, at GSN.
