E! unveiled its original programming slate at its Upfront event in New York, including six new series, a myriad of topical specials, live events and unique projects in development across a variety of genres. It was a rockin’ show at the Manhattan center, MC’d by Ryan Seacrest, who introduced Kelly, Giuliana & George from Fashion Police (did we mention there were striking FP writers outside the venue?) The Soup’s Joel McHale (who compared Seacrest to a Yorkie), Kourtney and super-pregnant Kim Kardashian along with mom Kris Jenner, and the irrepressible Chelsea Handler. Here’s a look at what the network has coming up.
New Series
The Wanted Life (produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions, Scooter Braun Projects and Global Talent TV) chronicles the personal and professional lives of the edgy pop music powerhouse The Wanted (who performed live at the Upfront). The show premieres Sunday, June 2 at 10:30p.
Viewers will get to peek into the personal lives of the glitzy, glamorous real women behind the WWE Divas in Total Divas. Produced by WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions, the series debuts Sunday, July 28 at 10p.
Pop Innovators, slated to debut in July 2013, showcases the most influential names in pop culture in their own words. The first episode will offer an in-depth look at the life and career of will.i.am from his point of view.
Love and Other Contact Sports: Eric and Jessie, slated for a late summer 2013 debut, will take viewers inside the confines of celebrity/athlete romances, starting with country/pop singer Jessie James and her fiancee, Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker. The show is produced by Shed Media U.S.
Hosted by Ross Matthews, interactive talk show Hello Ross [wt] gives fans the opportunity to debate the most buzz-worthy topics and come face to face with their favorite celebrities. From Borderline Amazing Productions, show is expected to premiere in fall 2013.
The Trend, slated to debut in fall 2013, features a team of experts and celebrity contributors discussing all things fashion, beauty and design.
Ten new specials include everything from baby drama to celebrity spats and lifestyles, including Holly Has A Baby (from Comcast Entertainment Studios and debuting Sunday, May 12 at 9p) about Holly Madison’s journey to motherhood; Bigger, Badder Celebrity Feuds (from Comcast Entertainment Studios and debuting Tuesday, May 28 at 10p), which reveals the gritty details behind some Hollywood’s biggest fights; and 50 Hours with 50 Cent (slated to debut in fall 2013), which gives one fan the opportunity to spend two full days with iconic rapper.
In addition, the network has six unscripted projects, three topical/comedy projects, and eight scripted projects in development.
Netflix’s Q1 numbers are in, and the company reports that it now has 29.17 million subscribers in the US alone — that’s 2 million more than the number of subscribers the streaming video provider had at the end of 2012. Globally, Netflix reports more than 36 million subscribers, an addition of 3.05 million new customers when compared to the end of 2012/previous quarter. The company’s net income during Q1 was $2.6 million on revenue of $1.02 billion, the first time it’s topped the billion-dollar mark. As a result, Netflix shares, which had gone up 11 percent during regular trading on Monday, rose an additional 21 percent after the closing bell on Wall Street.
Sony Pictures Television is launching the movie channel GetTV this fall. It will premiere on the Univision Television Group stations’ subchannels. Programming will mainly come from the Sony Pictures library and will include classic films. Sony Pictures Television is in talks with other station groups about picking up GetTV.
Good news for Mario Lopez; bad news for Khloe Kardashian. Lopez is returning as sole host of FOX‘s The X Factor, when the singing competition series launches its third season, this fall. Kardashian, who briefly served as Lopez’s co-host, is out. The X Factor judge Simon Cowell noted that he is “thrilled” to have Lopez back. “Hosting a live show and keeping the judges – especially Demi – in line, is not an easy job,” teased Cowell, referring to fellow judge Demi Lovato. “But Mario is a pro.” Open auditions for the show’s third season continue in Long Island, NY, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on April 25; and in Denver, CO, at the Denver Coliseum on May 14. For details, visit www.TheXFactorUSA.com.
Animal Planet will bring viewers closer to nature with its new series Treehouse Masters, as world-renowned treehouse designer and builder Pete Nelson and his team of craftsmen traverses the country to turn clients’ sky-high dreams into realities. Often described as a tree whisperer, Nelson uses an approach that’s part science/part art to create homes and businesses that are sustained by nature’s foundation trees. The series, produced for Animal Planet by Stiletto Television, premieres Friday May 31 at 10p.
It’s the battle for the title of bluefin champion as National Geographic Channel’s Wicked Tuna is about to come to a close. Cocky young captain Tyler McLaughlin and his crew are running neck and neck with last year’s champion, Dave Carraro of the FV-Tuna.com, and threatening to dethrone him. Power plays and bruised egos are forgotten as the crews rely on raw skill and sheer determination to haul in the most exciting catches of the season and one captain suffers a devastating loss. The two-part Wicked Tuna finale begins Sunday, May 5 at 9p and concludes Sunday, May 12 at 9p.
Investigation Discovery is prescribing its loyal viewers a new dose of content to feed their true-crime addiction: the announcement of Addicted to ID Week, beginning Monday, April 29. All week long at 8p, ID will air revamped episodes of viewers’ favorite series filled with pop-ups that include new factoids from producers, additional insight from the cutting room floor, and tweets from ID super fans. When applicable, hosts from the series will also provide expert commentary into the cases on screen.
Comedy Central has announced that animated series Futurama will not be renewed for any additional seasons. The show’s final season debuts on Wednesday, June 19 at 10p, while its finale is slated for Wednesday, September 4.

Syncbak’s technology is currently being tested by more than 100 television stations in 70 markets across 31 broadcast groups representing all major networks, including CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC and The CW.
Outdoor Channel has inked a multi-year distribution agreement with Xfinity TV from Comcast. The deal, effective immediately, makes the network’s array of outdoor lifestyle entertainment accessible for multi-platform viewing by Xfinity TV customers across the U.S. via Xfinity On Demand, online at xfinity.com/tv and through the Xfinity TV Player app.
Syfy has ordered a second season of its hit paranormal reality series, Haunted Highway. The new six episode season will premiere on Wednesday, July 24 at 10p. The show is produced by BASE Productions.
Teryl Rothery (Stargate SG-1, Kyle XY, Dragon Ball) has been cast as a series regular in Hallmark Channel‘s first series Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove. She’ll play Grace, the best friend of series star opposite Andie MacDowell. The show premieres on Saturday, July 20 at 8p with Ms. Rothery joining the cast beginning in episode two.
