Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Litton Studios, a unit of Litton Entertainment, will produce six, new, original half-hour FCC friendly Educational and Information (E/I) series exclusively for ABC stations, which will debut in September 2011.  Station groups set to carry the line-up of kid/family programs include ABC O&Os, Cox, McGraw-Hill, Newport and Post Newsweek.  Shows featured in the new three-hour programming block, which will all be shot in HD, includes at least three live-action series: Ocean Mysteries  which follows a team of scientists and explorers adventuring in remote and dangerous areas of the Earth to unravel mysteries; Earth: Angry Planet  explores ways in which power can be harnessed and stored (like wind power) from the planet’s natural weather events; Culture Click  this series looks at how technology is making the world a smaller better-connected place.  Additionally, Litton will continue to separately distribute its previous line-up of E/I programming, which includes Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild, and Animal Exploration with Jarod Miller.

Fisher-Price and SomosTV, Spanish-language pay TV producer/distributor in the US and Puerto Rico, ink a broadcast deal that will see Fisher-Price’s Little People content air on the new preschool-targeted pay TV channel Semillitas.  SomosTV launched the 24/7 Semillitas channel last month in Chicago, Boston, Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley, PA via RCN.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Joining the cast 3D animated feature film Moomins and the Comet Chase are Max von Sydow (Robin Hood, Shutter, Island, and so many more), Mads Mikkelsen (Clash of the Titans, Casino Royale) and Helena Mattsson (Iron Man 2, Surrogates).  Produced by Finland’s Oy Filmkompaniet the movie is set to premiere next month at the Cannes Film Festival, the voice-over cast for the Moomins feature film already includes Stellan Skarsgard, Alexander Skarsgard, and Peter Stormare, as well as a title song by Bjork and an original score by Andrzej Rokicki.  Max von Sydow will lend his voice to the movie’s storyteller, with Mikkelsen voicing the character Sniff, and Mattsson as the voice of Snorkmaiden.  Directed by Maria Lindberg from a script by Joel Backstrom, Iivo Baric, Anders Larsson, and Minna Karvonen, and is base don the book by Tove Jansson, the movie is the first Nordic 3D movie ever produced.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network premieres the new animated action/adventure series, Generator Rex, this Friday, April 23 at 8:30p.  The series comes from Joe Case, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau, and Steven T. Seagle, the guys behind Man of Action Studios, who also brought Ben 10 to the network.  Generation Rex revolves around 15-year-old superhero Rex, a custom-built super agent that can generate mechanical weapons and vehicles from the microscopic robots living in his body.

Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment and China’s CCTV Animation ink a deal that grants Atlantyca the exclusive broadcast and home video distribution rights across Europe to the English-language version of CCTV Animation’s mixed 2D/3D animated series Monkey King (52×22).  Atlantyca opened an office in Beijing, China in January of this year.  Developed and produced by CCTV Animation, Monkey King is based the popular Chinese novel, Journey to the West.  CCTV Animation is a state-owned company founded by China Central Television in 2007.

The BBC acquires the UK broadcast rights for the new 3D HD animated series The Jungle Book (52×11) from DQ Entertainment.  Based on works by Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book animated comedy adventure is co-produced with Germany’s ZDF TV and ZDF Enterprise, France’s TF1 TV and MoonScoop  France.  Targeted to K5-8, the series is budgeted at about US$12.4 million and is slated for delivery by end of 2010.

Sesame Workshop and Dhaka-based co-producers Nayantara Communications have begun production on a sixth season of the kid’s series Sisimpur, the localized version of Sesame Street that airs on BTV (Bangladesh).  The sixth season of Sisimpur focuses on encouraging kids to learn and about nature and the environment and respect the world around us.  The new season also includes celebrity appearances, spoofs on local TV shows, and a range of segments, such as live action segments directed by local teens from rural areas that reflects the culture of indigenous people from Shreemongol and Durgapur as well as those from coastal areas, where the preparing for, being aware of and respecting the forces of nature are an important part of life.

Egyptian Radio & Television orders the family targeted format series That’s My Kid (30×30) from Zodiak Entertainment.  Created by Zodiak Entertainment Group’s in-house creative unit, Zodiak Distillery, the series will make its debut in Egypt in 2010.  In addition to Egyptian Radio & Television, Russian network CTC has also acquired the rights to the format, where the show will be produced by Zodiak Entertainment Russia.  That’s My Kid gives parents the change to prove they know what’s going on in their kid’s head.

Author/illustrator Todd Parr, Suppertime Entertainment and Stouffer’s, a division of Nestle, partner to create a new kid’s book titled Let’s Fix Dinner ( www.letsfixdinner.com ), which is set for release in August 2010.  Focused on the benefits of families eating dinner together, Let’s Fix Dinner is written/illustrated by Todd Parr.  Net proceeds from the 24-page book will go to Habitat for Humanity.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nickelodeon veteran Marjorie Cohn is upped to President/Development and Original Programming and Development, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group; she had been EVP.  Cohn oversees Nickelodeon’s live-action TV creative executive teams on both Coasts, which includes managing the creative process and coordinating series production and various network departments and lines of business.  She also heads all original programming for Nick at Nite and TeenNick, and original TV movies for Nickelodeon.  She will continue to report to Cyma Zarghami, President/Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Cohn joined the company some 23 years ago as a Unit Manager and moved swiftly to Producer, working on shows including Double Dare and Don’t Just Sit There, and then as an Executive in Charge of Production on a wide range of animated and live-action series, eventually overseeing all live-action original programming and live events (e.g. Kids’ Choice Awards).  Congrats Margie!

ION Media Networks names Lisa Fischer as SVP/Network Sales.  Fischer, who will be based in NYC, will lead ION Television’s national advertising sales and strategic advertising agency and client relations.  She will report to Stephen P. Appel, President/Sales and Marketing.  Most recently, Fischer spent the last 10+ years at Discovery Communications, serving in several senior ad sales positions, including SVP/National Sales, Discovery Health Channel/OWN, SVP/National Sales, among others.  In those roles she represented a range of networks and brands, including Discovery Health Channel, Animal Planet, The Travel Channel, Fit TV, Discovery Kids, and Emerging Networks.

CPLG names Al Fedrigoni as Sr. Licensing Director, CPLG Canada.  Fedrigoni will oversee a range of kid-targeted brands including Johnny Test, Inspector Gadget, The Latest Buzz and totally Spies, as well as book properties such as The World of Eric Carle, which includes The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and books by Richard Scarry.  He will also continue building the It’s Happy Bunny brand.  Fedrigoni was previously with The Walt Disney Company (Canada), where he most recently served as Director/Licensing for all toy categories.
