Magazine and newspaper publisher Hearst is closing in on a deal to acquire digital ad agency iCrossing for $375 million, reports the WSJ, an independent agency that specializes in search media strategies. Advertisers continue to ask publishers to put together custom ad campaigns that involve direct sales components and iCrossing should provide Hearst with the technology to deliver far-reaching, measurable ad products. Meredith has also made investments in digital advertising companies, including Genex, Big Communications and The Hyper Factory.
Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate join venture Epix has signed its first national carriage agreement with Dish Network to launch to the provider’s 14 million subscribers (pricing and packaging details are forthcoming.) Epix has also signed carriage deals with Cox, Charter, Verizon FiOS, Mediacom and the NCTC collective.
Starz is making preview episodes of season 2 of its Megan Mullally comedy Party Down available this week on demand, online and in a new 99 cent iPhone/iPad game dubbed “Party Down: Waiter Wobble,” developed by Avatar Labs. Digital partners Amazon Video-on-Demand, iTunes, PlayStation Network, and Zune/Xbox LIVE will also make the new season debut of “Party Down” available as a free download on April 23, the day the show returns to Starz. A record 53 million video households will have access to the previews, according to Starz.
National Geographic is gearing up for the 40th Earth Day on Thursday with its Green Guide hub featuring an Earth Day quiz, a photo gallery, a new My Shot weather category and other goodies. National Geographic Kids will also feature a plethora of Earth Day-themed content from its dedicated Green Scene area.
There’s no such thing as a free social network anymore. Marc Andreessen’s White label niche social network infrastructure provider Ning, whose template hosts some 2.3 million social networks, announced that it is shutting down its free version and asking current customers to begin paying or leave the platform. The company, which has raised about $120 million in funding, is also drastically reducing its workforce from 167 to 98 employees.
Media center software provider Boxee announced a deal to distribute the NHL‘s Game Center LIVE out-of-market subscription streaming service, available for $19.95/mo. and $79/year.
Media-streaming set-top box maker Roku, which offers subscriptions to MLB.tv on its box, is set to announce a similar partnership with the NBA, per the WSJ’s Digits blog.
Location-based social networking start-up Foursquare is beginning to sign musical acts and labels to the service, according to comments made by CEO Dennis Crowley in a Billboard interview. Bands can “check in” to venues or record stores during promotions to encourage local fans to follow their tour or demonstrate their enthusiasm by collecting badges for completing tasks.
NBC has retained GotCast.com for its ‘Stand Up For Diversity’ initiative, a nationwide search for stand-up comedians of diverse backgrounds. The search, which supplements NBC’s live open calls, kicks off this week and will run through July 2010.

Lifetime is working with LA-based digital advertising company Interpolls to develop actionable, interactive ad units promoting the season 7 finale of Project Runway for the iPad. The Project Runway ad unit, which launched Monday, incorporates HTML 5-formatted video to feature behind-the-scenes footage and interactive voting around Fashion Week, allowing users to vote for and share the work of their favorite designers. The full-page rich media ad will also play across the iPhone and Android platforms.
Multichannel TV technology provider NDS and TV ad technology company BlackArrow announced an agreement to jointly develop advanced ad solutions for platform operators and programmers. NDS, which is leading a $20 million round of series C financing in BlackArrow with the investment arms of Cisco, Comcast, Intel, Mayfield Fund and Polaris Venture Partners, already provides audience measurement, addressable ads and interactive advertising tools to operators. Combining BlackArrow’s TV products is expected to speed deployment of services such as dynamic VOD ad insertion and the execution and measurement of advanced campaigns across multiple platforms and devices.
US consumers spent considerably less time consuming media in 2009 than 2008 – less than 12 hours, vs. nearly 14 hours/day for a 17% decrease, according to a Yankee Group study cited by eMarketer. Mobile phone usage, averaging 1 hour and 18 minutes/day, was the only category to show growth, increasing 39% overall as mobile web usage rose 36% to 11 minutes/day and texting increased 55% to 27 minutes/day. Reading seemed to take the worst hit in terms of consumption, with average time spent reading down by 59% from the previous year.

Comedic video site Funny or Die, MLB.com, P2P file sharing client LimeWire and Sony Online were among the top gaining properties last month in terms of unique visitors, according to ComScore. In terms of categories, automotive, green-themed community sites and political sites were the biggest gainers.

Apple has updated the shipping date for the 3G-enabled iPad, specifying that pre-orders should be shipped by May 7, noticed Engadget. The 16GB model is priced at $629, the 32GB version at $729 and the 64GB model at $829. Previous pre-orders are still believed to be on schedule to be shipped by the end of this month.
Verizon FiOS has extended its smartphone DVR-setting app, previously launched for Android, to the iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing users to view up-to-date programming schedules and set their DVRs to record shows from a remote location. The app also allows users to set bookmarks, search and view previously recorded shows.
The Travel Ad Network has hired Juliana Jaoudi to the newly created position of VP/Sales Development and GM of Europe. Juliana will split time between TAN New York HQ and London, reporting to Dana Hayes, the company’s Chief Revenue Officer.
Former Fox and Moxie Interactive executive Paul Santello is joining L.A.-based Evolve Media as SVP/Brand Sales and Marketing. He is responsible for working with the existing sales teams to create integrated, cross-platform solutions.
Facebook is trying to convince users to become fans of organizations, companies and public figures by recommending pages they might like. A new box of recommended pages based on biographical info, interests and affiliations you’ve added will appear on your profile page, allowing you to opt in individually or wholesale. (For instance, those interested in Television may be pointed to the Cynopsis Media group page.) Also, the “Become a Fan” button has been replaced with “Like.” Clicking on it adds the page to the contextually relevant section of your profile’s “info” section. Facebook is also improving privacy settings–new privacy controls allow members to determine who can view certain parts of their profiles or hide their list of friends from other friends. Finally, new beta “Community Pages” are dedicated to a common topic or experience to serve as “Wikis” of shared knowledge. Facebook will be asking people who are passionate about Community Page topics to sign up as a contributor at a later date.
