Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

The Governator, the new kid-targeted Arnold Schwarzenegger animated superhero series from Stan Lee and Pow! Entertainment and A Squared Entertainment (A2), finds a head writer in Steven Banks.  Banks served for six years as head writer of SpongeBob SquarePants, and previously for another Nickelodeon series, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.  A2 will produce The Governator TV series and 3-D movie and manage the worldwide licensing, merchandising and distribution. Archie Comics will publish the comic series in print and digital forms under the new brand label Stan Lee Comics. Stan Lee, his producing partner Gill Champion, and POW! will oversee all creative direction and story development.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The new animated series, The Looney Tunes Show, will premiere Tuesday, May 3 at 8p on Cartoon Network.  Starring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, the half-hour series also features other popular Looney Tunes characters including Porky Pig, Seedy Gonzales, Lola, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepe Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Granny and, well, you get the idea.  The series also features Merrie Melodies, the animated music videos of original songs showcasing a range of characters, plus new adventures with the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote in CG.  The Looney Tunes Show joins the network’s Tuesday night line-up that also includes the animated series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporate, which premieres its second season on Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30p.  The Looney Tunes Show and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated are both produced by Warner Bros. Animation, with Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) serving as executive producer.  Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone (Duck Dodgers, Back at the Barnyard, Space Jam, Tom and Jerry Tales) are supervising producers.

In other news… Cartoon Network inks a US broadcast deal with 9 Story Entertainment‘s animated comedy Almost Naked Animals (40×22).  Cartoon Network plans to launch the series some time this year.  Almost Naked Animals revolves around a group of free-spirited underwear clad animals that run a beachfront hotel, like kids at camp, and are always looking to have the maximum amount of fun. Heading up the dysfunctional group is top dog/hotel manager, Howie, who has the attention span of an 11-year-old.

Sprout acquires LazyTown in a new US broadcast deal.  LazyTown, including seasons 1 and 2 and LazyTown Extra, will join Sprout’s programming line up this September 2011, where it will air daily.  Additionally, LazyTown will be included on Sprout’s VOD service, as well as its website SproutOnline.com (www.sproutonline.com ), which will feature LazyTown games and coloring pages.

Little Airplane finalizes broadcast deals is the Far East for its new short-form, animated, music-based series Small Potatoes, which premieres this week on Cbeebies (UK).  Small Potatoes has been picked by Jei TV (South Korean) and Now TV (Hong Kong) taking the series for its VOD service.  Small Potatoes is slated to debut on Disney Junior later this year.  Other deals already in place for the short-form series include Canal + and Piwi in France, YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden), ABC TV (Australia) and TVO and Knowledge in Canada.

Nickelodeon celebrates Earth Day across its channels and websites.  Nickelodeon will encourage kids to actively take care of the environment and airs green-themed episodes of it series, including new episodes of Victorious (8p) Big Time Rush: Green Time Rush (8:30p), during it’s the Big Help Earth Day primetime programming block on Friday, April 22 from 8p, as well as eco-themed shows and on-air messaging during the day. Victoria Justice will host the on-air block and other members of the Victorious cast, as well as an appearance by Ke$ha, from Louisiana where they took part in The Big Help Earth Day in the Gulf restoration project near New Orleans.  Nickelodeon’s day will also feature a special preschool block from 7a, featuring a new episode of Bubble Guppies at 9:30a.  Additionally, Earth-centric messaging is running all week online on Nick.com, and its other channel sites.  On other channels, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons will also mark Earth Day: Nick Jr. will air 24 hours of eco-themed programming, and Nicktoons will present a week-long Dib Saves the Earth Invader Zim mini marathon April 18-22 at 5p.  Public Service Announcements (PSAs) featuring Victorious’ Victoria Justice and Leon Thomas, which offer kid tips on being more eco-conscious, are airing now on Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons.

Disney Junior also gets its green on for Earth Day this Friday, April 22, with green-themed episodes of Jake and the Never Land Pirates (8:30p) and Handy Manny (9:30p).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Rocker Bret Michaels partners with Kidz Bop to record, with his daughters Raine and Jorja Michaels, a new version of his hit power ballad Every Rose has Its Thorn, which will be featured on the special new album, Kidz Bop Sings Monster Ballads, releasing May 17.  A portion of the proceeds from the album will go to benefit Michaels’ Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.  Additionally, Bret, Raine and Jorja will also host the Kidz Bop Sings Monster Ballads Air Guitar Super Contest running from May 231 on KidzBop.com (www.kidzbop.com).

CPLG brokers a new licensing deal for Horrid Henry in the toiletries category with Sert-MST for the UK.  The new product line from Sert-MST, which includes shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, wipes, handwash, bubble bath, plasters and shower gel, will be available at retail beginning this summer 2011.  The products are set to debut simultaneous to the release of the new 3D live-action Horrid Henry feature film, which stars Anjelica Huston, Richard E. Grant, Kimberley Walsh, and Dick & Dom.  Based on the characters created by author Francesca Simon, the Horrid Henry TV series is produced by Novel Entertainment and airs on CiTV, among other channels around the world.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products Brazil and partner Exim Licensing introduces a line of Easter Eggs based on Nickelodeon characters and brands.  Under an expanded deal, confectionery licensee Top Cau will release Ni Hao Kai-Lan and The Backyardigans themed chocolate Easter Eggs, each containing a premium, for the first time.  The Backyardigans eggs will be available exclusively at Walmart in Brazil.  These new branded eggs join SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, and Penguins of Madagascar-branded eggs, which return this spring.  This Easter, under a separate deal with retailer Lojas Americanas, SpongeBob SquarePants Easter Eggs contain a miniature sponge, and the iCarly eggs contain a small radio.  Under a deal with retailer Arcor, the Penguins of Madagascar eggs will include a character premium.

Toei Animation enters into home entertainment deals in Latin America for Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya Sanctuary, Sailor Moon, and Pretty Cure (not series are for all audiences).

  • Televisa (Mexico) inks a DVD deal for Dragon Ball Kai (episodes 1-54); in separate DVD deals En Pantalla (Mexico) takes rights for Dragon Ball (episodes 1-28), Dragon Ball Z (episodes 1-72), and Dragon Ball GT (episodes 1-64).
  • Televisora Nicaraguense (Nicaragua) takes DVD rights for Saint Seiya Sanctuary (episodes 1-3), Saint Seiya Elysion (1-6), and Saint Seiya Inferno (episodes 1-12).  Panamericana TV (Peru) enters into a DVD rights deal for Saint Seiya Sanctuary (episodes 1-3), Saint Seiya Inferno (episodes 1-12), and Saint Seiya Elysion (episodes 1-6).
  • Televisora Nicaraguense (Nicaragua) also takes the DVD rights for One Piece (1-104). En Pantalla (Mexico) inks a DVD deal for Pretty Cure (episodes 1-26). Towers Entertainment (Mexico) enters into DVD deals for the whole Sailor Moon series, and a CD and DVD for Factory in Brazil (episodes 90-110).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Banijay International, the content distribution division of Banijay Entertainment Group, appoints Luci Burnley as International Sales Executive.  Burnley, who joins the company on May 1 and is based in London, will be responsible for International activities in a number of territories, including the UK, Australia and New Zealand.  Burnley will report directly to MD, Karoline Spodsberg.  She was previously Format Acquisitions and Sales Manager with DRG.

The Juno Company welcomes 30-year video game and toy industry veteran Bernie Stolar to its Board of Advisors.  Stolar has served as EVP of Sony Computer Entertainment America, overseeing the launch of the PlayStation platform, President of Sega of America where he launched the Dreamcast platform.  He has also served as President of Mattel Interactive, and was CEO of AdSpace Media, which was acquired by Google.  At Google, Stolar took on the role of Games Industry Evangelist and led in-game advertising initiatives.  The Juno Company is a kid-targeted media company that focuses on creating music education products (e.g. movies, apps, games, TV series, toys, books etc.).
