Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, April 18, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
After eight months, Crown Media has taken down the “For Sale” sign for Hallmark Channel. The channel will now turn its focus inward, looking to build up its affiliation deals with cable MSOs and satellite services, continue to build subscriber and ratings growth and to cut losses. Crown Media was looking for a $2 billion sale of the channel, and several came by to kick the tires including Viacom, Comcast and News Corp., among others.
Tonight’s Premiere:
ABC: Less than Perfect at 930p
* MORE GOOD STUFF *Superstation WGN has added two Disney Channel off-net programs to its early fringe and weekend schedule. Distributed by Buena Vista Television, Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens will begin airing nationally this fall, and Superstation WGN has acquired the exclusive syndication rights to air all three seasons of both programs. Both shows join a family block that includes Moesha, Home Improvement and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Superstation WGN currently reaches 68 million homes.
BET programming update – four premieres and one finale. Reminiscing with Mary J. Blige premieres tonight at 730p and College Hill returns on April 20 at 930p. And two new series:
- News program Meet the Faith will debut on April 23 at 11a and 8p, with CNN’s Carlos Watson hosting as guests enter moral discussions on unconventional subjects.
- The Chop Up will also premiere on Sunday the 23rd, at 1130a and 830p, presenting issues of the day with interactive viewer-sponsored podcasts and web-based polls conducted by BET.com.
As for the upcoming schedule finale – the season ender of Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown airs on Thursday at a special time — 1030p.
MTV has expanded Discover and Download, a show that features up and coming music acts, by launching it on MTV Overdrive as well as across its other platforms including MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com, and mtvU Uber and via wireless. Discover and Download’s current line-up includes exclusive live performances, interviews, and videos of new artists including Arctic Monkeys, Flyleaf, Cheyenne and Rick Ross. As of this week Amp’d Mobile begins featuring full Discover and Download Live performances from the Arctic Monkeys leading up to the TV and on-line premiere of a special Arctic Monkeys Discover and Download Live on Friday, April 21 at 11p on MTV2.
Today’s couch potatoes are not just sitting on the sofa watching TV. No, they can do that anywhere. A new marketing campaign launched by AOL and Warner Bros. for In2TV, the first broadband television network to offer free on-demand TV shows via the web, will depict an animated potato watching TV on its wireless laptop. Included in the execution is the tagline: Online. Anytime. Always Free. on two billboards, one in New York’s Times Square, the other in Los Angeles, some radio and an online instant-win game.
Rainbow Media is allowing individual cable operators to use the WE: Women’s Entertainment series Bridezillas in a customized affiliate marketing venture to target female customers and sell a localized bundle of services. Bridezillas and the Bundle will be featured in a :30-second TV spot provided by WE, along with a WE Bundle Toolkit which includes print ads, direct mail, banner ads and a broadband package. Cablevision, Cox and Charter are the first MSOs to sign on to this marketing initiative.
CNET will launch CNET TV, a new VOD service for distribution on TV and online through partnerships with Cox Communications Inc., TiVo Inc., and TVN Entertainment, as well as on CNET in the latter half of the year. CNET TV will includes franchises such as Insider Secrets, Weekend Project, and First Look from the Labs, and will also feature user created videos, and regularly scheduled consumer news and trend programming.
So there you are, filling your car with gas with nothing to do but watch the numbers on the tank turn over faster than you can count, when … what’s this? TV! Here at the pump! Courtesy of NBC and VST Media Network, providing local news, weather, sports and entertainment, drawn from the local NBC affiliate, all in a three minute loops airing and updating throughout the day. State Farm and Tropicana have signed on to be the charter sponsors of the project. The initial rollout will be in LA, San Francisco and San Diego by year’s end, with plans to go nationwide over the course of 2007.
* NEW PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *CBS comedy project The Big Bang Theory has re-cast its lead female role with Amanda Walsh, now playing opposite Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons. Galecki and Parson’s characters are physicists, very book smart. It’s Walsh’s character that teaches them about living life and partying smart. The role was originally cast with Iris Bahr.
* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Chris Moseley has decided to leave her position as EVP/Chief Marketing Officer of the Hallmark Channel at the end of this month.
HGTV has upped Andy Singer to VP/Original Programming. Based in Knoxville, Andy will oversee a team of Directors/Original Programming, including the recently hired Maddie Henri and Bill Myers, who will be responsible for new program development.
Bedi A. Singh has been appointed EVP/CFO, Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. Singh will report to CEO, Rich Battista. Singh was most recently Chief Finance and Administration Officer, Novartis Pharma A.G., and prior to that was CFO/Sony Pictures Entertainment. Singh takes over for Brian Urban, who stepped down as Gemstar’s CFO earlier this year.
Grupo Televisa and Univision Communications joint venture, TuTv, has upped Chris Fager to President /CFO. He will be replacing Mark Feldman, TuTv’s founding President and CEO. Before joining TuTv in 2003, Chris worked with E! Entertainment Television through it launch and its international business. In addition, TuTv upped Damaris Rodriguez to Director/Advertising Sales.
