Cynopsis: Kids!
04/17/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 17, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

DreamWorks Animation teams with Walmart in the US to make its animated feature films available digitally through Walmart’s exclusive disc-to-digital service, which is powered by the streaming service VUDU. DreamWorks Animation is the sixth studio to team with the retailer, joining Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. So, here’s how it works – consumers bring their previously purchased DVD/Blu-ray movies (from a participating movie studio) to a Walmart Photo Center where they will need to create a VUDU account and then their movies can be converted to a cloud ($2/per disc, or upgrade a standard DVD to an HD digital copy $5/per disc) where they can log onto VUDU.com and have access to the titles on 300+ different internet connected devices.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney and its Marvel Studios are set to co-produce Iron Man 3 in China with Beijing-based DMG Entertainment signing on to co-produce and provide financing and distribution for the feature film, per THR. The third installment of Iron Man will again feature Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, but this time the movie will be directed by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). Jon Favreau directed the first two Iron Man movies. Slated for a May 2013 release, Iron Man 3 will begin by filming here in the US in May 2012 and then move to China over the summer. DMG has a good working relationship with the China Film Group, which should help with get the movie appealing to Chinese audiences and navigate more easily through the state imposed imported films quota of 20 foreign movies per year in addition to 14 foreign 3D or Imax films each year.
