Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

One of sports’ most-storied events shook up the news world yesterday after bomb explosions demolished the finish of the 117th Boston Marathon and left at least 90 injured and two dead at press time. The two blasts came hours after the winners crossed the finish line, shortly before 3p, while runners who had not finished the race were diverted into a family meeting area.

Universal Sports Network, which carried the event, reported that the network’s crew was at the finish line but uninjured. “We are grateful that all Universal Sports staff are safe and accounted for,” said David Sternberg, CEO, Universal Sports Network, who was in Boston. “We have suspended coverage and have cancelled all re-airs of today’s race. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured.”

Meanwhile, ESPN and the SEC have postponed the expected announcement of the new SEC channel today. “In light of the tragedy in Boston today, we have decided to postpone Tuesday’s SEC/ESPN press conference in Atlanta,” said Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive and ESPN President John Skipper in a joint statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by these horrible events.”

Coverage of the tragedy on the broadcast channels continue today with Matt Lauer anchoring live from Boston and Lester Holt on the ground on Today, while Good Morning America will have special coverage this morning with George Stephanopoulos and Josh Elliott reporting from the city.

On the Air

CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the 2013 Masters on Sunday drew an average household rating/share of 10.2/21, up 26%, from last year’s 8.1/19 in the Nielsen metered markets. The event peaked at a 13.4/25 from 7-7:30p. Meanwhile, the channel’s Saturday coverage delivered an average HH rating/share of 6.3/15, up 24% from last year’s 5.1/12 in the metered markets.

Dan Hicks is the new voice of NBC Sports’ Notre Dame Football coverage this season, and will serve as the lead play-by-play voice for games. Hicks, NBC Sports Group’s longtime golf and Olympic commentator, will debut on Saturday, when NBC Sports Network presents Notre Dame Football’s 84th Annual Blue-Gold Game at 1p. Hicks replaces Tom Hammond, who inked a new multi-year deal with the broadcaster.

Elsewhere at NBC Sports, Faith Hill announced on Twitter that after six years of performing the ‘Sunday Night Football’ theme song, she is stepping aside. She noted that it’s time to ”let someone else rock the open. Difficult decision. Kinda emotional.”

As 76er fans prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Philadelphia 76ers’ 1983 title, NBA TV is slating a new subject for its NBA TV Originals franchise with a look at Julius “Dr. J” Erving. The 90-minute program, The Doctor, will air between Games 2 and 3 of The Finals on Monday, June 10, at 9p.

ESPN2 and ABC are on deck to carry 14 regular-season WNBA games this season, as well as the return of the WNBA All-Star Game. The company revealed its 2013 schedule, which opens with a ESPN2 Memorial Day doubleheader featuring the WNBA Draft’s top four picks on Monday, May 27 with Mystics/Shock at 3p, followed by Sky/Mercury at 5p.

The French Open is beefing up its prize money this year, adding more than three million euros to 22 million euros ($28.77 million) for the pool, according to Reuters. The winners of both the men’s and women’s singles titles will each earn 1.5 million euros, up 250,000 euros from last year.

One of Golf Channel’s longest running instruction franchises returns for a new season tonight when Playing Lessons airs at 7:30p. New host Holly Sonders will join some of the world’s top players to allow viewers to eavesdrop on discussions on course management, strategy, drills and tips for viewers. The first episode features Ian Poulter joining Sonders at Orlando’s Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.

The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) revealed its Emmy winners. With MSG’s Al Trautwig taking home a trophy for sports on-camera talent, while YES Network’s Ian Eagle won the play-by-play category and Keith Hernandez was a winner for his work on SNY in the analyst category. Overall, MSG Media, which includes MSG Network, MSG+ and MSG.com, received 18 New York Emmy Awards – 16 for MSG Network and one each for MSG+ and MSG.com. YES Network took home seven and SNY nabbed four.

CBC added Rob Pizzo to the family, where he will join as host of Hockey Night in Canada Radio on SiriusXM, with his first show airing tomorrow at 3p. Pizzo will also appear across multiple CBC platforms to offer hockey insight and analysis as part of news broadcasts and online outlet.

NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas is now a talk show host. The Hollywood Reporter writes that he will host the series Unfinished Business With Isiah Thomas, a weekly half-hour interview and commentary show that will premiere on cable channel Cinemoi North America TV in June.
