Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/13/10
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, reporting from NAB in Las Vegas.
Newly-sworn in NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith, a former Senator from Oregon, made a patriotic push for broadcasters to be left a seat at table in the FCC’s new vision of a broadband-connected America at his inaugural industry address at NAB on Monday, pulling out Will Rogers, Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite to make his case. Striking a familiar anti-regulation stance, Smith noted that the industry just spent a collective $15 billion to meet the mandated switch to digital and warned that aging Americans would end up being cut out of the loop if the government ends up reclaiming broadcasters underutilized spectrum. He also noted that Homeland Security, in the form of using broadcasting to reach the masses in the case of national emergencies, would be threatened.
Yahoo and production studio Reveille are teaming to develop original content for distribution across the portal’s network of sites. The first series to come from the partnership will be a daily Yahoo! News show, “Who New,” sponsored by Toyota, profiling the day’s most clicked-on stories. Yahoo and Reveille also co-produced Real Life Makeover for woman’s vertical Yahoo! Shine.
Turner Sports’ NBA.com announced it will include companion coverage of the NBA Playoffs with mosaic live video streaming of three games in the first round, eight games in the second round, and the Western Conference Finals on “TNT OverTime” on NBA.com. NBA Mobile will also feature its NBA Game Time Playoff Edition, featuring live play-by-play text.
Fox is addressing the problem of how to keep fans occupied during summer rerun time with the launch of the “inHouse” iPhone app on May 24, featuring original short-form “appisodes” written by House staff writers and made exclusively for the platform. The app will subsequently feature new episode-specific material each Monday, coinciding with the broadcast of original episodes during the regular season.
The still not-ready-for-primetime 2nd annual Streamy Awards were doled out on Sunday night in L.A., recognizing streamy excellence in the web video space:
- Best Comedy Web Series went to Funny Or Die’s “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis”
- Best Drama Web Series was awarded to Crackle’s “The Bannen Way”, directed by Jesse Warren, who also won for Best Directing of a Drama
- Best Hosted Web Series went to Revision3’s “Diggnation”, co-hosted by Kevin Rose – who took over the reigns of Digg last week after CEO Jay Adelson stepped down as CEO
- “The Guild” walked away with Best Female Actor and Best Directing for a Comedy Web Series
- The Audience Choice Award was awarded to Agents of Cracked
The Streamy Craft Awards, a sister event to recognize best editors, cinematographers, art directors and producers, were handed out on April 7. One trend this year is that more web shows are being picked up for distribution overseas. For instance, 3 of this year’s nominees have been acquired by ContentFilm’s digital arm Fireworks International, including Electric Farm Entertainment’s ambitious vampire series “Valemont,” which received technical Streamy awards for Best Interactive Experience in a Web Series and Best Mobile Experience in a Web Series.
Michael Eisner’s Vuguru, whose “Prom Queen” has been sold to over 40 markets, also signed a deal with Fireworks International for the rights to distribute the 62-chapter thriller “The Booth at The End”, penned by Christopher Kubasik and helmed by veteran television director Jessica Landaw.

Men tend to view more video than women at bars, restaurants, health clubs and other public places according to Nielsen‘s inaugural Fourth Screen Network Audience Report measuring out-of-home video “exposure.” Some 54% of the 237 million monthly exposures to adults 18+ were displayed to male audiences during Q4 2009, with 46% going to females. An estimated 50% of all the monthly exposures to adults were displayed to men and women in the key 18-34 demo. The report, which enables direct comparisons between digital place-based video networks and other video networks, also found that video ad exposures to NCM’s and Screenvision’s movie theater networks combined for an average 61.7 million – meaning that it took about 20 primetime ads to reach the same audience as a typical month-long advertising flight on both movie theater networks. About 27% of the audience exposed to movie theater network ads are between 2-17.

Both Sharp-built phones will debut exclusively on Verizon and feature full QWERTY keyboards.

Glow is the newest digital brainchild of the Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun’s BermanBraun production partnership. A lifestyle vertical for MSN, the site features a fresh look inspired by fashion magazines along with a minimalistic interface that compels users to explore and linger on topics that interest them. It is the former TV giants’ second major launch for MSN, following upon the successful celeb site WonderWall. Lloyd Braun, who greenlit Lost before exiting ABC and ran programming for Yahoo before the last .com bust, told NAB audiences that the two sites will be used to launch original content in the future and that mobile video could be the real sweet spot for brand advertisers in the future. But he also warned that Glow’s digital shows will be ultra niche by definition and look nothing like his company’s original TV productions. “Even if broadband shows are easily available on television (via over-the-top devices), I’m personally not about to have our company spend 2 minutes creating original scripted shows for the internet,” he said.
